The current assumption is it's going to be fixed after her transatlantic in April (that was moved up 10 days). But I don't think it's been officially released.

Per notification from NCL to passengers after scheduled dry dock:

"In April 2020, Norwegian Star will enter dry dock for mechanical maintenance.  Upon completion, a team of engineers will work diligently for the following 60 days to ensure her optimal cruising performance..."

I am aware of the time frame for repairs in  April. My question is did the past few cruises go off without a hitch. dd they make all the ports?I will pack those floating devices just in case . Not sure about the Pop Tarts.

The STAR cruises in the Mediterranean and the Adriatic have had issues missing the Port of Dubrovnik.

The problem issue as I understand it is that the STAR has 4 engines furnishing electrical power to the

ship - one of the those engines is down - the engines furnish power to the 2 azipod propellers (image).

The STAR has had azipod problems in the past while sailing in the Australian New Zealand waters.

While it does not take all 4 engines to do this powering the ship with lighting and all the buzz stuff

casino gaming machines galley equipment etc. with one engine down it limits the full operation of the ship.

To go a lengthy distance between ports the speed to timely arrive is compromised limiting the port time

and shore excursions.

The dry dock scheduled for April is the fix to restore full 4 engine power to the STAR.

Azipods are not the current problem but are the primary high electrical drain on the ships power.

A 4 horse coach can't go as far and as fast on 3 horses - sorry Captain this is all she's got  !

  • 2 weeks later...

my understanding is that these problems have not as yet been fixed. we are sailing fromsantiago on march 14th and havebeen advised that due to the ongoing mechanical problems,2 of the ports have been cancelled. ironically, we took the star on its 1st southeast asian tour dec2016 through jan 2017, and the mechanical problems were identical.

Better hope they are not identical, could result in being towed to port.

As noted by those who have been onboard recently, the current problem is with one of the diesel engines, while the previous problem you are referring to was with the azipods.  And, to note, the failures of those azipods were unusual, and the manufacturer had never seen one before, on any unit on any cruise line, and the temporary repair was sanctioned and completed by the manufacturer.

The last couple of itineraries have not reported any missed ports.....but the in port schedules had already been adjusted to cut original docked times to allow more transit time.....so no problems, but not fixed.  We are on before the repair and are expecting to have a wonderful time.

While the Star may not miss ports, it does impact booking private excursions, especially if a change is made the night before and you can't contact the vendor. For those of us who prefer private excursions, this is a big deal.

Sure, and in general the condition of the Star is far from ideal, no one is arguing otherwise. BUT, for the last 2 itineraries in January there have been no reports of missed ports or delays. They adjusted the schedule because of their problems and have so far (knock on wood) been able to meet the lowered bar.

Some people from the past few cruises have postEd updates on FB that their cruises went on without and problems and they had a great time!

We have a cruise booked for November 2020. Have been keeping track of the Star using cruismapper.com website.
There were a couple days (unscheduled) spent in Buenos Aires (turned around and went back in the middle of a cruise) a month or so ago. It made me nervous as the chatter on line was all about the azipods and how ports were being skipped and people were unhappy. Since those two days the ship has been doing well. Getting up to 22kn in open water (she is rated for 24 kn top speed) and pulling in to ports on time. If there are more repairs still scheduled for April, I have absolutely no worries about our cruise at this point.
