Hopefully this vaccine works as promised 🤞

Meanwhile when would it be my turn to get it? 10 million doses delivered this year with 2 doses per person means unlikely anyone under 75 years of age will be eligible unless they are in specialist categories. There are 5.7 million people in the UK aged 75 or over as of 2019. I am 70 next spring - 9.02 million are 70 and over. The 40 million doses ordered treats 20 million people and there are 20.56 million people aged 55 and over. To vaccinate everyone over 50 would need another 10 million doses to be ordered.

I have 2 identical cruises booked on Iona next year, one in May and one in late September. With the May cruise final payment due in February I think I will be cancelling that one as the vaccine may not be available until spring/summer.

finally, if I do catch COVID, what are my chances of dying 😨 have the death rates dropped since spring? I tried an online search but no results 😕

finally finally again - I see the orange one has tweeted that the vaccine announcement was deliberately delayed to hurt his election chances 😉

The fact that you have lost loads of weight Dave should work in your favour plus the improved treatment now.Just keep up the regime you are keeping.Cheers,Brian.

The best thing about the announcement yesterday re the vaccine is that we now have hope.......

Agreed  As  Professor Jonathan Van-Tam described it , likening it to a train said ..

" We can see the train but it's not pulled into the station yet and we need to wait for it to stop

and once it's doors open ,we can safely begin to use it "

Now all we have to do is continue to keep safe until our time comes for the vaccine to be used on us.

Lets just be thankful , for people like Josy & Pete who have made results like this possible for

us to look forward to .

Lot’s of questions!

The answer, for now, for the first ones, seems to be “We’ll see”

Here’s a website to help you work out your personal covid risk.  It’s a few months old, so as treatments have improved considerably, the situation, and your chances of survival, are improved

https://your-covid-19-risk.com/

Thanks, tried that site but it does not mention risk of dying, only risk of catching it. what I want to know is the risk of death OF someone who has contracted COVID-19.the data must be out there somewhere as it was reported back in spring.

edit - I tried asking this question "mortality rate of hospitalised COVID-19 patients" and got "down from 30% to 15% from UK sites and down from 25.6% to 7.6% from US sites".

another question to ask " what percentage of people with COVID-19 are hospitalised?

I think that is much too general a question. You need to ask how many people in different age groups are hospitalised, and then cross reference to those with underlying health problems, and those over weight.

On top of that you need to take ethnic background into account.

As more a less 'lurker' on this board, I would like to say that obviously it is potentially very good news, but how much faith do you all have in the efficiency of delivery of this vaccine?  Thinking about the efficiency of the government in organising anything so far in relation to Covid.

I do believe in the advice that we should all be taking vitamin D, however.  Evidence seems fairly good that a deficiency of this, the sunshine vitamin, contributes to severity in people, and maybe even getting it in the first place.  And I am not naturally a vitamin supplement taker.

You’re absolutely right on both points.

And the inestimable Michael Spicer made the same point yesterday:

pls don't give the vaccine to the govt, they'll probably accidentally inject all of it into a single elephant or something

Thanks for the reminder ,I have been meaning to add those supplements to our shopping list for weeks but kept forgetting to do so .

I am also not naturally a vitamin supplement taker, last time was when I was a kid and my mum would give me those Haliborange ??   tablets, vitamin C was in fashion back then.

Reason I'm buying them now is the simple reason ,I am not getting out as much as i would have liked.

I see no harm in topping up on vitamin D for a month or so .

I've heard the Government has sequestered a fleet of Mr Whippy vans to alleviate the temperature problem.A free 99 with every jab.Just listen out for the jingles.

Similar to the lollipops our doctor used to give the children who went for their vaccinations.

We have been using Vitamin D supplements for about 3 years now, more so in winter than in summer. Also ensure we have Vitamin D rich foods in our diet such as salmon, mackerel & other oily fish, not keen on herrings though. Spent some time working with a dietitian following my heart attack just over 5 years ago, we now make around 80% of our main meals from scratch so we know what is in them.

I have lots of faith that selfless folk are doing their very best to try and keep us safe and save lives. I also have faith that many will never be satisfied.

The new vaccine from Pfizer is likely to be the 1st of many. Most of the pharma giants are trying to develop vaccines and it’s a bit soon to tell yet what the best vaccine is likely to be.

generally feeling a bit blah, about the latest lockdown it feels very much like Groundhog Day again.

I couldn't agree with you more kalos. If not for people like Josy and Pete and most of the world's top scientists working together we would be no further forward than we were six months ago. I also have the utmost confidence in Professor Van-Tam, and believe in him completely regarding this pandemic. He is the only one with no political agenda, just the desire to get this country as covid free as possible.

Sounds very much like my diet since  my HF & type2 ,I keep well away from processed foods and takeaways which are a thing of the past.

Food made with loving care wins everytime

There are many thousands of dedicated people trying their best, but there will always be others who only wish to be armchair experts and quote some obscure expert who said something they agree with. As Henry Root would say " If you don't like it, ask them to leave your name out of the hat".😁

It feels like everyone is a little brighter today.  Fingers crossed that this is the beginning of the end, as worsisname said yesterday.  Early days but 🤞

Vitamin D is a must for Northern Europeans and especially older ones.  We take it all year - double dose in winter.  Helps the body deal with calcium to ward off osteoporosis and evidence points to it helping prevent or postpone dementia.  Normal doses have not been found to have any contra-indications.

We're the same. I've always made everything from scratch, mainly because it was cheaper as well as healthier, and can honestly say neither Frank nor I have ever had a takeaway. They've never looked appetising to me at all. I only use olive oil too. We also take a H&B ABC+ multi vitamin each day. I don't know if it does any good, but it can't hurt😉

Quite.  And the Telegraph ran a story a couple of days ago with the header: 'Ministers draw up plans for four-month supplies to go to care home residents and clinically extremely vulnerable people in England'.

May or may not be true, but in reply to a PM Question last week on the subject of the Scottish Government sending four months supply of vitamin D to everybody who shielded in Scotland (low cost and no medical downside) Johnson replied: "He is entirely right that we are indeed looking at the possible beneficial effects of vitamin D."
