We'll book the new Rotterdam When we hear the Casino is SMOKE FREE. We sailed on the Konigsdam  twice and liked everything about it except the horrid smell in the Casino (even on non-smoking nights) and you have to pass thru to get to the front elevator. Meantime there are other HAL ship for us.

I agree with you, we spend a lot of time in the casino. We want to book the T/A so I called Holland and spoke with Michelle Janicki.  She checked with powers to be and sent me an email stating there will be no smoking in the casino of the Ryndam/Rotterdam.  Only question is can we believe them.

Really, is that on the Rotterdam only?  I am not sure I believe it either, maybe one or two nights a week.

According to her the only two ships that will allow smoking, when cruising resumes, in the casino are the Statendam and Konningsdam.

Maybe they will be the only ships left 😄

I was originally booked on a July 4 2021 sailing for the Ryndam (now Rotterdam). Got an email from HAL saying a different itinerary has been tentatively rescheduled to a July 11, 2021 sailing on the Nieuw Statendam. Pretty much a lot of "To Be Decided" items, won't get much clarity until 4-6 weeks for now. But looks like I'll get another $100 in OBC. C'est la vie.

As a result of the global health situation, Rotterdam will now be delivered one year from today on July 30, 2021, rather than her original delivery of May 2021. We regret this means we must reschedule your upcoming voyage.

You will be automatically re-booked on the below voyage. Your cruise fare and promotions have been protected and you will be in the same (or equivalent) stateroom category. As a gesture of our appreciation, an Onboard Credit (OBC) will be applied to your new booking of $100 per person.

Nieuw Statendam | J147 | 11-Jul-21
7-Day Viking Sagas | Roundtrip Amsterdam

A new booking number and confirmation will be sent to you within 4 to 6 weeks. While we know you are eager to learn more about your new booking, we ask for your patience as we go through the process of building replacement voyages and rebooking your cruise. Please know our reservations team does not have any additional itinerary information to share with you. Details will be shared when your new booking is confirmed in our system and we look forward to answering your questions at that time.

Once you receive your new booking, should you have any questions or wish to consider an alternate sailing, please contact your travel advisor or reach out to us at the appropriate office:

When they add, on their web-site, the new Rotterdam to the list of the six ship that have non-smoking casinos. They are the 4 Vista & 2 Signature class ships.

I think this is funny. Many of the old timers swore they would never get on a Pinnacle class ship because they don't have a full wrap around promenade or because they are too gigantic or too humongous for them.

Now, change the name to something which is historical to HAL and they're all willing to jump onboard.

I'm just wondering how the people in Holland associated with Ryndam are feeling about all of this.

Me - I like the Pinnacle class ships and think they are a step forward for HAL which gives them something to compete with the other comparable lines.

As a relative newcomer to cruising with HAL (6 cruises and counting), I'd genuinely like to know why you all are so delighted about this name change?

Of course I cannot answer for "the people in Holland"; so, just for myself: reason 1: Rotterdam is the town where I visited often (as from the fourtees) my grandparents, living on the other side of the river Maas from the head office of Holland Amerika Lijn. I admired many many years the Holland Amerika passenger ships and freighters docked at their quays.  And if I remember well: reason 2 HAL ships are registered in Rotterdam.  reason 3: I loved the ss Rotterdam V from visits in the sixties and later the m.s. Rotterdam VI as a passenger..... Reason 4: I like the city of Rotterdam and its inhabitants (special characters). 🙂

The Rotterdam has always been the flagship of the fleet and if they do this right them make it the most beloved ship in the fleet again, especially if they bring some thing of the old Ms onboard.

Not really, most of us don't like the big ones without a promenade deck, but since we are running out of small/medium size ships especially if the Zaandam and Volendam are leaving, the vista's offer not much and getting old too than the new Rotterdam will become our only good choice for a cruise, if they make this a true flagship..

Awesome decision Holland America Line!

We are booked on her first TA next fall and excited that it's now going to be the flagship Rotterdam!

(We are 3 stars but we've never sailed on the previous Rotterdam or any of the other smaller ships that were just sold....We love the K'dam and NS so this is all the better for us!)

Now keep going Holland America.......perhaps......

  • drop the Nieuw in Nieuw Statendam (never understood the logic of that....now is the time to change the name)
  • christen the Rotterdam with Dutch Royalty breaking the bottle of champagne (no political celebrity's again, please)
  • save some $$$ and drop Oprah's contract (she is too political for me...leave political celebrities off the ships, please)

Looking forward to smooth sailings ahead........

We have a cruise on the old Rotterdam for August 2021 and it is still showing up on my HAL account.  I wish they would go ahead and cancel officially as I have credits to reassign.

We sailed on the Prinsendam's final voyage. It was already owned by another cruise line at the time.
