Cruise or Las Vegas?

My sister and her family recently went to Vegas.  I thought she was crazy, but it actually worked out fine.  People wore masks.  Based on her pictures, it wasn't crowded at all.  The only place that had a lot of people was the pool.  Anyway, it appeared to be very easy for her to social distance.  She's been back home for awhile now, so she didn't get sick.

Nevada's one of the states with surging cases and that's mostly due to the Vegas area.

Another consideration favoring Vegas is that if a hotel staff member tests positive you won't be quarantined in your hotel. You may however find yourself forced to stay in your cabin for two weeks if the same thing happens on a cruise ship.

I would choose neither. Not saying there's no circumstances where I would take a trip, but neither of those sound desirable to me. I'm a hard no on cruising until it re-starts and has proven to me that I can take the vacation I want to take in the way I want to take it with no chance of getting stuck quarantining on the ship. I don't believe that they can. So, booking a cruise is a no for me. If they restart and prove me wrong, I would be willing to reconsider.  Las Vegas has no appeal to me right now. Casinos were disgusting in the best of times, not interested now. I enjoy the shows but again, If my choice is paying $200 a person to sit in a show for 3 hours wearing a mask vs saving $200; I would rather save $200. I do wear masks, I don't have a fundamental problem with them. But I also don't want to spend money on an experience that has less enjoyment for me because of them. I would just as soon save the money and take a extra vacation a year in 2022 and 2023...

Seems like the OP enjoys gambling during their vacation.  If they live in Florida, can they drive to a lesser known casino somewhere in that state and stay there?  There's a casino in Immokolee that doesn't get the volume of customers that the casinos near the Atlantic Coast or even Tampa get.

 

Otherwise, if the choice is risk one's health and vacation experience or stay home and shelter to be safe, I would stay home and do my gambling on line.

If I had to put my money down now on a cruise or Vegas, I'd do neither.  Being in hospitality, I am NOT comfortable yet that hotel housekeeping staff are practicing proper procedures yet.  It add necessary time to clean a room, additional staff isn't being added.  Public areas needs cleaning more often and, without extra staff, probably is just a dog & pony show.  I had a birthday trip back in April planned to the Cosmopolitan pre-COVID.  I go to Vegas once in awhile for the pools and the food (I only take $200 for gambling and when it's gone, it's gone).  I cancelled that one.  It'll take awhile more, and talking to friends in hospitality in Vegas, before I'll think of going there.

As for taking a cruise - no way for at least 2 years.  Just no trust in the lines to put actual good practices in place.   You're still stuck on a ship with thousands and, as we see with Noro and COVID-19, people will lie to not get quarantined.  And, they will wait too late to quarantine.   There is an article in the New York Times about a study done on the Diamond Princess incident today.  It still makes me think even more about just not cruising.

we would have to fly to Las Vegas.  However, we would be probably going on SouthWest, that assures us that the middle seat will remain empty.  Once we are there, I think I would be pretty good at social distancing.  I would wear a mask.  If I was at a slot machine //gambling table and anyone got too close I would move.  If worst came to worst and I got sick I would still be in the US.

I would do my best to keep away from being too close to people.  I would probably book a suite so that I could have a restaurant that has tables far enough away to make us feel comfortable.  I would, of course, wear a mask and wipe down/disinfect our cabin frequently.  

Short cruise, either 5 days or 7 at the most, so if we got sick, we could still get home and quarantine in our own house or a US hospital.

 

Which would you pick?  (We are both over 65, so we probably should just stay home, but we are getting so sick of this!)

There was an online article from Travel and Leisure posted on FB - Southwest is no longer going to sanitize armrests and seatbelts between flights...  So, they are already slowly migrating to "business as usual".

Anyways.  Back to the actual subject.  Cruise, by a mile.  I like Vegas, but being at sea on a cruise is so much more relaxing to me.

The question might be how relaxing it would be with the COVID protocols and knowing you could be quarantined on board or denied landing if anyone on the ship showed symptoms or came up positive.

Hi, Don,

I've heard that.  I'm the OP and I've been reading reviews and watching videos.

It seems that LV is being taken over by a really rough crowd and there's very little police presence.  The homeless are also being confrontational with the tourists.

 

I can't imagine that large companies would willingly book their next convention there  the way it is now.

 

(I replied specifically to you because of your LV address.  Hope what I've been reading is not entirely correct, but if it is that when this virus is over, they get this under control.)

Something I just saw today on TV that we need to be aware of regardless if you want to do that first post-COVID cruise or Vegas vacation.   The water/plumbing systems have been sitting idle for months.  It's a good way to get nasty bacterias and stuff to grow in the systems.  Unless they have had staff running around flushing toilet and turning on faucets all the time in all those cabins and rooms, there's a possibility that you're going to get sick.   I already have been wary of going to hotels because of my first-hand knowledge of housekeeping, and this just jacks it up.

I'd bring bottled water to drink and brush my teeth and wash my face!!!!!  And, no shower.  

 

Also CDC just found Legionaire's in a couple of buildings they just leased in Atlanta...  

 

Camping is sounding better and better!  I always bring my own water and I don't need to shower!!!!

My son is an assistant chief engineer in a 42-story office building in Seattle & part of the skeleton crews job while the building was shut down was to flush ALL the toilets & run the sinks every 24 hours to hopefully prevent issues like that --- don't know if it worked but it should have helped.   The building is still not completely occupied again.
