CDC says we may be able to start cruising from US this summer

The orbit of the Earth is measured by the vernal equinox in March so the calendar is reset in the month preceding it.

 

“The calendar year was originally meant to start in March with the vernal equinox, so that’s the first day of spring,” Rachel Ward-Maxwell, a staff astronomer with Ontario Science Centre, told CTV’s Your Morning.

 

“And so February was the last day of the year, so that’s why the extra date would be added in February to make sure that the first day of spring was always aligned with the right time.”

Cashiers around here where gloves.  When this all started my brother was semi-retired.  He would go into his store to count and balance the tills and then return home.  He was one of the first 100 to pass from Covid in March of 2020.

I think Augustus Ceasar added a day to August and took it from February.

There are 2 ways of looking at the start of summer.

One is by the calendar, using the June 21st date of the equinox.

The other would be based on local traditions.

There is the old saying that in Seattle is starts on the 5th of July.  That has evolved from June often being a bit cloudy and wet. Add to that the 4th of July seems to rain more often than not.

In reality many natives of the area consider the first Saturday May as the start of the season.  It marks the Opening Day of the boating season.  It includes crew races and an enormous parade of Yachts and smaller boats.  For the 2nd year most of the events have been cut way back or canceled.

Adds confusion to say summer starts on Memorial Day, as it was originally always May 30th.  Now it is the last Monday in May, so Memorial Day can be 5 days sooner than it used to be.  Perhaps this is to allow for global warming.

It WAS unworkable. Those who blame the cruise industry for not "complying with reasonable rules set by the CDC" can point to this change as being exactly why the industry has objected.

I heard that April 12 was the magic day that spring break ended and the snowbirds headed home from Bradenton.  We just went to Publix and checked license plates as we walked in - one South Carolina and one Michigan, all the others in our row were Florida.

They dropped the 12-hour rule, but the separation rule remains.  Now the standard is "to the extent practicable".  That means with "reasonable efforts".  I guess now the discussion will surround what's "reasonable efforts".  I wonder if that's any better than a specific time window?

When I lived in Boca it was always said high season ended on easter sunday. This year I think the snow birds forgot to go home.

 

Hotel prices and car rental rates would be dropping if theh went home.

Unfortunately, I have a Sept. '21 Oasis cruise and based on the below statement from another topic "No Summer Cruises for USA Ports--Crew Return Postponed".  It does not look good for the entire summer months, at least from Bayonne, which as you know is stricter than say Florida.
 
 
Royal Caribbean Casino Host vlogger Chris Wong released a video today saying his return to ship status has been postponed by at least 3 months this week. Sounds like Royal Carribean doesn't see a work around to the CDC before the end of summer nor any legal or legislative work-arounds.
Beyond issues with the CDC in the U.S., I'm starting to get worried about the slow roll-out of vaccines outside of the U.S., especially with issues around the AstraZeneca vaccine popping up. Australia announced today they are changing their goals, shifting country-wide vaccination in October which would open up the country by year-end deep into Q1 2022. Canada and Europe are also scrambling, making herd immunity more realisitic by next summer than than this one.
I thought my international cruises in January and May 2022 were safe, but with this news out this week, I'm starting to have my doubts. Anyone else?

In many communities at the shore, Memorial Day marks the beginning of renting season. In the Northeast at times it can be chilly or warm when it opens.
