Yesterday, @kazu and @kochleffel commented on the giant Hosta that I moved. I should have taken a picture before I dug it up! It probably had not been divided for 30 years or more. Here are the four transplanted hunks - 

 

I cut up the root ball with a combination of garden spade and a knife. I kept as much dirt around the roots as possible (since this was probably not the ideal time to transplant a Hosta) and I have been watering them every day. 

 

My Garden Tip - Keep a sturdy knife in with your garden tools! It doesn't need to be particularly sharp (it will get dull quickly anyway) but it should have a very rigid blade to allow for prying things apart. I have a 6 inch kitchen knife that has been an invaluable garden tool for years. It has cut up quite a few root balls and may have even supplied the coup de gras to a mole or two. I'm not sure where I got it, it might have followed me home from lab one day...

Beautiful pictures!  We had preliminary plans to take a cross country Amtrak trip in a sleeper and spending several days in New York, but Covid interrupted those plans.

I have a humongous one that has never been divided. Every year it nearly covers the little stone gnome in the garden (in the center-left).   No plans to move it thank goodness. 😅

That sounds like a nice alternative to cruising.  Still, I do love cruising and being on the water.

 

You should check out some of the Canada/New England cruises that include the Atlantic Coast down to Florida sometime for a nice cruise.  We just have to wait for Canada to open up again.  Our cruise stopped in Maine, Boston, NY, Charleston and Key West before ending in Tampa.  Some of them just stop in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale.  Great trips not too far from home.

@JazzyV  Vanessa, I'm glad you had a picture of the Verrazano Bridge with the lights on.  Mine was too fuzzy.

 

These are some pictures of Manhattan taken from the various ships and we sailed in or out of the harbor.

 

In 2003, the Rotterdam sailed from NYC the day after the blackout that covered a lot of the northeast.  Because of delays and cancellations of flights, the ship did not sail until early the next morning.  These pictures were taken while the ship was docked, one before sunset and one at night of the same scene.

 

These were taken on the very early morning return to NYC on the Rotterdam.

Hopefully adding two photos of a special part of WTC Memorial. This is The Grove honoring those who volunteered at WTC after 09/11 and then died of WTC diseases.  My DH and I were there and then he died 16 years later as a result.

Thanks for the tip on the knife and sharing.  You’re right, it’s not an ideal time to transplant hostas, but hopefully they take for you 🤞 watering them is really wise.

I’ve done a fair bit and usually it’s worked.  The key is to transplant at the right time.  Early spring and late Fall and usually the best times for most plants IME.  It’s always a gamble but usually works 😉

I will post a pic later in the week of our current challenge.  The trunk of a potted banana plant that is dead, with new plants growing around it.  Dear Dad wants to transfer the largest plant, but the last time we did this it died, he says he knows what he did wrong that time.

Happy birthday, Roy and VMAX 1700.  You would think after all this time I could figure out how to get little blue signs with names on them!!  

Anyway, happy day to you all.  

We may see some sunshine here.  Granddaughter is on the deck watching the seals and giving me weather reports!!  We are going to lunch with friends and then coming home  to wait for the cousins from Colorado, and her brother and grandpa returning from Portland, to arrive.  Tomorrow is other Colorado family and grands parents.  Then we are set for the family memorial for DH dad who passed in February.  It will be a great celebration of life.  

Love the clematis pictures.  Mine have been blooming also.

Did we have a let it go day before “Frozen”? I remember the first flamingos we saw in Florida when I was a kid; prefer not to have the plastic ones in my yard (wonder how much Donald Featherstone made off his original plastic flamingo). The work of the United Nations is much appreciated.

 

I have had a pisco sour before-yum. I almost had that Riesling last night at dinner,  but chose a Pinot Grigio instead. The recipe sounds like something I’d like, DH not so much.

 

I have been to NYC quite a few times, but just twice on cruises. The last time was on the Norwegian Breakaway with my 2 DDs heading to Bermuda a few years ago. My first was on the Noordam to the Panama Canal. We had a choice between catching the ship in FLL or NYC. We had HAL flight and pickup. Our same day flight was late. When we arrived at the airport, no HAL rep anywhere. We waited awhile, I was starting to get nervous. Finally I called the number in my docs, but had trouble getting through. Eventually I reached a real person who told me to grab a cab, keep the receipt, they’d reimburse me. Just then we saw a HAL rep approaching.  She said on her manifest it said our flight was arriving after the ship sailed which didn’t seem likely, so she had come back to take one more look around. We got to ride to the port with the HAL employees, and were just about the last people on the ship. Kudos to all the HAL people who got us there on time. The cruise was wonderful, we stayed on until Seattle. The first days were so much fun; only 600 people got on in NYC so we had the entire ship to ourselves until FLL. We asked the captain to skip that stop 😉. No pictures from either cruise on my IPad so I will just enjoy everybody else’s.

 

Another beautiful summer day to enjoy. I’m off later to the ATT store to pick out a new phone. And we are celebrating Fritz’s 15th birthday today. He’s an old man.

 

Prayers for those on our care list 🙏. And a toast to those celebrating 🍷. Thank you all for your kind words on my friend losing her ALS battle.

Good morning everyone and Happy Wednesday. Thank you for the Daily Rich. Great collection of days today. We saw the Flamingos 🦩 in the Caribbean on our Panama Canal Cruise but can’t remember where. I wish our cruise history online included the ports of each cruise. 
 

Thank you for your lists Roy, on this special day. I wish we all could gather at your table in the MDR on a BHB to sing Happy Birthday to you. 
 

The meal suggestion sounds really good. I think we are having sausages tonight though because I just bought some apple Gouda ones yesterday.  Craig is getting ready to go visit his sister and brother in the White Mountains (AZ) and I’m excited to make some things that he doesn’t like to eat. I have a list on my phone called “Things to do while Craig is away” that has ideas like quiche and potato pie. 😉
 

We sailed from New York City in 2009 , I’ll look and see if I have any to share.

We have had the pleasure to enter New York harbour a couple of times on a BHB . Here some pictures of arrival and departure while on the Eurodam in 2009 when we went from Quebec City to Ft Lauderdale .

Carnival Miracle needed help from some tugs , The Eurodam did it all on her own even with a very strong wind when we left . Everything on the outside decks was tied down and we listed a lot because of the wind going out of Port . It was quite exciting .

Good morning, all, and thanks to all the posters.  Happy Birthday to the Birthday Boys!  DH worked for a UN agency as a financial analyst, but the last ten years or so were in water supply and sewage, so I guess that counts as public service....  I will toast him this evening.  My pictures from New York are much like the ones already posted, so it's nice to remember.  We are having sausages tonight, because I got them out of the freezer yesterday, but then DH invited the neighbours over for drinks and we ate onion rings and other things and weren't hungry afterwards.  

 

My cousin in California took us to the San Diego Zoo and I was amazed at the flamingos - until she explained they were feeding them carrots instead of shrimp to colour them.  (You can tell in the picture who ate all their carrots!)

 

 

First day back with our exercise group this morning - I'll let you know if I am stiff and sore tomorrow!  Everyone is double-vaccinated, and we are still wearing masks.  Pat is golfing today but will re-join the group on Friday.
