You’re welcome. I thought it was in an odd place because I’ve never thought of smoking as an enhanced health protocol.  🤣

I take it you are not old enough to remember the advertisements in which "medical doctors" were shilling for tobacco companies.

imo cruise ships can have it both ways  ,all they need do is to have a  glassed in smoking section with all sorts of  smoke extracting machines & another area for non smokers   .It takes investing into the proper equipment   .The cocktail servers  can wear special masks  to protect them

Your idea might well impact on the ambience of sensible cruising.

There is a thread on the Emerald Princess transiting the Panama Canal.  According to to that thread there is no smoking or tournaments in the casino due to Covid.  Of course, we are over a month out so who knows what the status will be then.

That is the protocol for cruises of 10 days or more.  Emerald's cruise is 15 days IIRC.  For cruises of less than 9 days, there is smoking permitted in the casino.  On those cruises of more than 10 days masking is required in many more locations throughout the ship than the cruises of less days.

Casino smoking on Princess ships is restricted to a certain cluster of slots and is for those playing. Smoking at table games, the casino bar or other areas of the casino is not permitted.

As a life time non smoker I don't like the policy, but I don't find it too annoying. I don't spend much time in the casino anyway, maybe a half hour at the late evening craps table or a few pulls at the slots.

When we've gone in the past, people would go to the casino just to smoke.  They would congregate in the seats near the cage, of all places, and just puff away.  Now, you don't see that so much anymore.  We did notice some people smoking on the smoking section of our last cruise but the nonsmoking side was very well ventilated and there wasn't even a hint of smoke in the air.  We found a nice little corner and nobody much went back there.

Smoking in the casino on Princess is restricted to small specific areas.  They also have air extractor and conditioner units. I do not believe you are going to sit immediately in front of a smoker.  Gambling has always been associated with smoking and drinking in general society.

That is changing because many businesses are finding that going smoke-free does not hurt their businesses at all.  California has been smoke free for many years except some of the Indian casinos still allow smoking.  The Cosmopolitan which is one of the larger hotel and casinos on the Las Vegas Strip has very restrictive smoking policies and places now on its' property and in its' casino.  The no smoking trend is spreading on the Las Vegas Strip.....smoking will be a thing of the past in another few years in many public and private venues plus casinos in certain states.......

We'll find out how efficient the air extractor is on our November Sky trip.  It may prove not to be an issue at all, though my past experience (not on Princess) gives me doubts.  Thanks to all for your comments.

IMO, the Royal Class ships have very good HVAC and the smoke doesn't really spread around the room much.  With elimination of smoking at all table games now (and not just the poker table), there is just the one side (port) with smoking.  Not sure how the smaller ships are doing these days, but Princess upgraded HVAC for Covid, so who knows?

Now isn't that a brilliant piece of intelligence? 🙄  Princess says ok to smoke up to 9 days, but not if 10 or more.  Imagine the folks who book a 14-night voyage thinking no smoking and then they find out it is really 2x7-nights and there is smoking.

As things are today, Princess has one or two small outdoor areas that allow smoking.  Many ships have Churchill's which is a separate enclosed room indoors where smoking is allowed.  And then there is the final small area of each casino in a section of just some of the available slot machines.  This is an indoor space that is not blocked off or enclosed, so smoke can drift around and up to some degree.

I imagine most folks do not have an issue with the first two, and it would be nice if Princess would just finally shut down the rest of the casino for indoor smoking and not just on formal nights.

With reduced capacity it could be the whole thread turns out to be much ado about nothing.  We'll find out in about a month.

Cunard has a Churchill's but it is a cigar lounge.  I think you can smoke pipes in there but strangely cigarette smoking is banned.

The Churchill's on Princess is also a cigar lounge, but cigarette smoking is permitted there. Often there are more cigarette smokers there than cigar smokers.

I need to correct this post.  I was wrong when I said smoking was banned in the casino for cruises of 10 days or more.  After reading through the protocols again, it appears that masking is required in the casino at all times (regardless if the cruise is more or less than 10 days.)  Masking is required in ALL indoor areas on cruises of 10 days or more but the 10 day cutoff has nothing to do with smoking in the casino.  It seems smoking is permitted in the casino at all times.  Some indoor areas of the ship are mask optional 9 days or less, but not 10 or more days.

Sorry for any confusion.  ☹️

a quick question.

The flags that all these cruise companies use when at sea, are there any labor laws  in these countries, that allow the staff/crew to work with the "Dangers" of second hand smoke ?

I would think ships at sea are covered by separate maritime laws, regulations, and conventions. Flagged vessels follow these regulations, with some exceeding the requirements.

At a guess, I would imagine that "Exceeding the requirements" are probably much lower requirements than laws that we are used to.

I'm just wondering where you are going with this.  If there were work safety rules in effect prohibiting smoking then you wouldn't be seeing smoking on any cruise ships anywhere.  Would that answer your questions?

Different countries all over the world identify hazards differently and have different regulations and laws relating to the workplace and simply being in that country as a tourist for example.  It does not mean any particular country has got it right or wrong on any specific issue.  Passengers who go cruising disembark at many ports world-wide and occasionally get into trouble with local laws without realising their mistakes.  How do people feel about not being able to walk about some Caribbean islands wearing camouflage?  Touring Singapore while using chewing gum?  What about ladies walking around the Blue Mosque in Turkey in a brief T-shirt. You do not have a right to bare arms. People do not see these things as wrong but they are in those places so when local rules have been made different to your homeland you simply need to follow them.
