sailingdutchy Posted December 19, 2021 #51 Share Posted December 19, 2021 Good morning / afternoon all and Happy Sunday , thank you very much to Rich and Roy for keeping this Daily going and for all the contributors , it keeps our bond strong with all our cruise friends we think of often . Yesterday I was struggling with my posts of Kaohsiung and our story of the storied Westerdam cruise , my post finally came up after asking help from CC plus I have added a few more pictures about the Westerdam story if you are interested in those . Today another nice memory to look at , Cape Horn or in Dutch Kaap Hoorn named after the city in the Netherlands of Hoorn for the birthplace of navigator Willem Corneliszoon Schouten who rounded the Cape in 1616 . Forward to 2015 while on our Antarctica cruise on the Zaandam on Feb 7th , 2015 our Captain PJ van Maurik went through the Drake Passage and circled Cabo de Hornos . We had very fine weather doing all of this so I can show a few pictures , but you can see that the winds can be very strong here from the damaged monument that had partially been blown over . From the screen in the crows nest Chilean coastguard And a gorgeous sky before while starting the crossing to Antarctica Tony 😄 32
marshhawk Posted December 19, 2021 #52 Share Posted December 19, 2021 I was told that when you are out in the woods, and you see a holly, it means that a person had build a house there and lived there, as holly does not move from place to place on its own thru it's berry seeds. Not sure if that is really true, but when I am hiking out at the park, in the woods where there is nothing but trees, and I see a holly, my imagination creates a back story of a family who built there, lived there, and disappeared because of war, battles with local Indians, or lack of finances. @StLouis CruiserYour DMIL sounds like she was a wonderful person, and I am glad that she left looking beautiful, but she was always beautiful inside. I'm not going to cancel my next cruise in September yet. The world may end, the cruise may happen, but my next cruise is actually two already cancelled 5 days combined into a 10 days, and I might be getting too old to keep moving them into the future. However, if there are no places that will let us dock, can I do a 10 days at sea? Not sure if I could. Maybe they would visit all the Bahamian private islands, and just cruise in circles for 5 days. Now that I would do. Add that its in hurricane season, oh the excitement! 23

Rare Crazy For Cats Posted December 19, 2021 #57 Share Posted December 19, 2021 Good Afternoon All, thanks for the daily report. We disembarked the Dawn this morning. Ice and snow in Boston caused an hour delay on out flight home. We are in the air and I’m watching “Christmas Vacation “. @dfish recipes look good, we will be having takeout since neither of us will want to cook. Looking forward to seeing “kids”. I hope that everyone has a good day today.
grapau27 Posted December 19, 2021 #58 Share Posted December 19, 2021 3 hours ago, StLouisCruisers said: Good morning friends! It's been a slow start to our day here because we're a tad bit worn out from the whirlwind trip back to St. Louis for DMIL's funeral. The main thing I want to say to recap the day is that when we saw her at the visitation we immediately felt relief and awe. Let me explain. Her body these past few months was like a shell and she was virtually out of it 95% of the time. She rarely ate at the end and was so tiny and shrunken. But those in charge of her at the funeral home took over and she was transformed back to her usual self. We gasped at how lovely she looked! Everyone who visited said the same thing - she was beautiful! DMIL was always pretty particular about her appearance and she would be so pleased with her final look. Her hair was arranged as she would like it, her make up was perfect, the dress we'd chosen along the way was flowered and the colors suited her. Even her nails were painted to match. All we could say was thank goodness this was our final memory of her instead of how she'd looked at the end of her life, especially at 95 years old! (she didn't look a day over 80!)🙂 The chaplain invited people to come up and say a few words and my DS and DD spoke, DH's cousin who was DMIL's nephew stood up to talk about visiting family as a child and how they enjoyed going to DMIL's house to play games. Happy memories! Also my twin's daughter got up to speak about how involved in THEIR family my MIL was. DMIL lived a few blocks from my twin in 1988 and when her youngest child was born, DMIL volunteered to babysit Lyndsey when my twin went back to work as a dental hygienist 6 weeks later. She took my twin's kids on as extra grandchildren because she only had our two children to spoil and love. There was a lot of love and laughs about all our memories of her. Many warm happy thoughts were shared and DMIL must be looking down and smiling at us.😇 Anyway, I want to thank Rich for his Daily report, Roy for his lists for those who need prayers and those who have happy events going on, Debbie for the food report today, and the food and beverage department. Prayers continue for Jose, Jacqui, and Father. We are always thinking of you! @1ANGELCATI hope your hand isn't badly injured. Very sorry to hear about the fall. Please take care! I need to catch up on CC today. Today's destination is two fold. Been to Cape Horn three times and across Drakes Passage two times. Always an adventure and one I wouldn't miss. Thanks for the photos so far. Hugs to all of you!! I'm pleased to hear you are both back home safe and sound. Your DMIL sounded like a wonderful lady and it is nice that she looked lovely for her final look. Take care and stay safe. Graham. 12

Or, maybe the land was homesteaded by a couple fleeing a life of poverty and despair in another country. They cleared their land for farming, building a cabin with the trees they had cut. As years passed, they worked hard to raise their children in a new world of hope and opportunity. They planted a holly in front of the cabin as a symbol of cheer and perseverance. The children grew up, and left home for careers and prosperity in urban areas. Eventually, they brought their parents to live with them in a large, comfortable draft free house where thermostats and taps took the place of chopping wood and hauling water. The parents lived out their final years basking in warmth, love, and laughter, surrounded by grandchildren. Meanwhile, the drafty old cabin slowly sank back into the forest whose logs it had really only borrowed for a time. Nourished by the logs, trees reclaimed the land. The old holly still stands, a reminder of what was, and a statement that hope and perseverance can lead to great things in the end. My sister-in-law brought a few jewelry items of her Mom's that she had put aside for safekeeping. There were two antique style elongated marquise-shaped gemstone rings that our two granddaughters were excited about having. Luckily there was no argument over which one they preferred. It felt good to see these items passed on from a woman to her great granddaughters!💕
Rare kazu Posted December 19, 2021 #63 Share Posted December 19, 2021 Good afternoon everyone, Firstly I would like to thank you all for all the caring, kindness and prayers. I don’t want to go into too many details but Jose was seriously ill, even unable to talk. He is still very ill, in a state of delirium but he has started to talk and starting to understand some things at times. The rest of the time he is not understandable but he knows I am there and a light has come back in his eyes part of the time when I am there. He is listening to me and taking his meds and today, for the first time, I succeeded in getting him to eat. It wasn’t much. Just 5 spoonfuls of corn flakes and a couple of pieces of banana but it’s a start. he has a huge team of specialists working on his case and they have several hypotheses. They have put a few things in place that will do no harm until they get another lumbar puncture that will hopefully get a better sample. They have held off as they want him to recover from all his sedation to get a bench mark before they sedate him again for another LP. The specialists have been by every day and I’ve had a chance to talk to them and I keep notes on changes I am seeing for them. They are a very caring team and top notch in their professions. I have some great Christmas memes I have been collecting and am going to try to share some over the coming week. I’d like to put some joy in the lives that have prayed so hard for us. If I don’t post an update, it’s because there isn’t any other than a slow progress, hopefully. Believe me, I will post another update when there is something meaningful to share. It’s been an exhausting time and I have at least 2-3 weeks to go based on what the specialists guesstimate. So, he will be in hospital for Christmas and with luck there will be no bad storms so I can be with him for some of it. As many of you may know, my family is far away so I am so grateful for the angels in my life right now that are helping me, providing drives when I was too shaky to drive at the beginning, meals, support, dog care, etc. God bless you all for your caring and my prayers are with everyone on the Care list and those struggling at this time of the year. thank you ♥️ 28

lazey1 Posted December 19, 2021 #67 Share Posted December 19, 2021 (edited) @kazu. Thank you for posting this update. Even the babysteps of recovery that Jose is showing are a blessing. We will definitely continue praying for his recovery and that the specialist will find out what is wrong so they can begin effective treatment. We all love seeing your Meme's and if you can take pleasure in posting them please do so. @StLouisCruisersNo matter how long it was expected it is still heartbreaking when a loved one passes. I am so glad that you were able to find comfort in your MIL's final appearance. @rafinmdMy BIL apparently has a mild case of Covid. He tells me he is feeling "pretty good". Now if only we could hear from Himself. Jane Edited December 19, 2021 by lazey1
