[StLouisCruisers]

The September 14, 2018 stop at St. Peter Port on Prinsendam started out sunny but clouds arrived shortly after we got to shore.

 

From the pier we turned left and walked towards the La Valette bathing pools near the Underground Military Museum.

 

 

 

 

I'd be a little worried about bathing near those rocks, though.

We popped our heads into the Underground Military Museum but didn't want to spend our time underground so didn't go any farther than the entrance.

 

The people of Guernsey were under German occupation during WWII.  I've read the novel that describes the occupation twice now, and really enjoyed it.  It's called "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.  I highly recommend it.  You'll understand the title when you get into the book.

 

 

This port is a hilly one and on this second time here we found these stairs to move up to a different street.

Look at this private property, called Grange Court.

Our next stop was Victoria Tower which was erected in honor of a visit by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1846.

 

 

Interesting that they let you borrow the key to go inside.

 

The cannon is one of two German WWI cannons buried as the second WW approached in 1940 so that the invading German forces would think the island wasn't fortified.  The two German cannons were excavated in 1978 and are back on display in the garden there.

 

Next we walked through the Candie Cemetery (which runs alongside the Candie Gardens).

I have to venture our shortly, so this will be a brief greeting. We are under our 4th Winter Storm Warning and I need to restock a few things. Snows to return tonight. This should be the last in this series of storms. We need moisture but we are beginning to grit our teeth a bit. And my shoulders hurt from moving snow.

 

Best wishes and positive thoughts to all who need them. Hope a med adjustment will help Tana.

Sending prayers 🙏 that the meds can be amended and it makes a big difference.

On prior visits we visited other places around town so maybe I'll check for some photos from then.  I always enjoy this particular port and have been lucky to be able to tender in each visit due to decent.  Not always true unfortunately for some cruisers.

We have been lucky and always managed to get in to St Peter's Port on a tender but lots of cc friends on P&O have had lots of occasions when the sea was too rough and they couldn't get in to St Peter's Port.

Last time we were there on P&O Ventura 25th August 2018 the landing site had moved to a new site a few hundred yards away.

Well, I am back from my trip to the grocery (and wine) store.  It was fairly busy so I am guessing that this afternoon and evening will be ridiculous. I can’t even imagine what tomorrow will be like.  I’ve decided we will have salmon with asparagus this evening and I’ve picked up the ingredients for a charcuterie board to go with our champagne tomorrow evening.  At some point there will be steak and a wedge salad.  I was going to buy the ingredients to make a cheesecake but then decided to be a good girl and start the new year as I intend to go on.  I will probably regret that decision tomorrow but at least there won’t be cheesecake.  😜

Good moorning again.  The sun is trying to break through the clouds.  The prediction is for rain overnight, but willout the really high winds we had earlier this week.  It will be cold (for us in the desert) but balmy for those up north for several days.  Next week is supposed to be warmer, but I'll not hold my breath.

 

In honor of bacon day, tonight's supper will be BLTs with wine.  I use bicarbonate of soda for baking.  A few years ago, I tried baking soda and vinegar to clean the oven -- never again!  It didn't get it really clean, and I'm still finding remnants of the baking soda.  As far as enormous changes I agree that has been the case for the past two years, and unfortunately, it may remain so for a while longer.  

 

I love the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt and hope to remember it each morning.

 

We'll pass on the meal since I have that huge port shoulder to smoke next week.  We'll also pass on the drink and the wine.

 

I always enjoy seeing pictures of the ports and seeing what each one is interested in seeing and doing.  There is something for everyone in the ports.  Thank you, @StLouisCruisers Sandi, @grapau27 Graham and @kazu Jacqui for sharing your pictures.

The last time we cooked bacon we were on a camping trip many years ago. It was raining and I took refuge in the car while Sam cooked the bacon. Suddenly, the whole tent collapsed on his head and we left the camp site and checked into a hotel. That year we bought a time share in the Tanglewood area and it was over for tent camping and bacon. That was 1982.

Our friend in hospice has stopped eating and is too weak to walk. We used to spend NYE with them and one other couple. The other couple died several years ago and the four of us are left. It’s very sad for us.

Our NYE get together here in our condo community has been canceled because of covid.

Carol, we've cooked steaks in the rain when tent camping with DH opening the tent to check the grill just outside.  At least, our tent did not collapse!  Sorry about your friend in hospice and the loss of your other friends who celebrated New Year's Eve with you.  I think it was wise your community NYE party was canceled.

Terry, that's not good that Tana is still having trouble breathing even with oxygen and not feeling much better.  Hope the specialist can offer something else to help her.  Those of us on the Daily are also worried about Tana.  Remember, your family is not alone.

Be careful when venturing out, and stay safe during the next storm.  I'm glad Colorado is getting much needed moisture.

 

@marshhawkGrowing up in Texas, blackeyed peas were the traditional good luck meal.  I did not like them, but my mother said I had to eat a spoonful of them.  Now, when we fix them, I add salsa to the beans, which helps a lot.  Our DSIL grew up in Louisianna and said cabbage should be eaten for good luck.  So New Year's Day, we'll have blackeyed peas and cole slaw with more of the Christmas ham.  I too do not remember anything offensive that you posted yesterday.  We're glad you joined the Daily family and are comfortable here.

 

@StLouisCruisers Sandi, with the current variant, I think you made a wise decision to skip your neighbor's NYE party.

 

I'm not sure what happened as one post I clicked to multi-quoate didn't appear and two others disappeared.  But at least @cc mane worked.

 

Once I get a couple of things done, we're going to make a quick run to Blythe for a few things I forgot Tuesday.

Interesting days. Mmmm, love bacon, but restrict it. Bicarbonate of soda is needed for baking, and does a good job for cleaning things, as well as treating indigestion. I try not to make enormous changes at the last minute, unless forced to by circumstances beyond my control.

A gray day here, but at least the rain has briefly stopped, and it's near 50F. I'm planning NYE food, even though it's just me. I'm going to make black-eyed peas tomorrow. Pork and sauerkraut on New Year's day. I can freeze some; I was going to take some pork and sauerkraut to BFF, but he's making his own from my recipe.

 

@kazu Continued prayers for Jose, his medical team and you. It's good to hear Marley's appetite is back.

Oh!  I forgot to mention that I drove by the Urgent Care/Walk-In Clinic on my travels and it is PACKED!  I have never seen anything quite like it.  There are cars parked on the grass, on the busy main road, and down two side streets.  I cannot even guess what is happening.  Do you think, maybe, people have already developed severe symptoms from Christmas?  I know they (and the pharmacies) are no longer seeing patients with no or mild symptoms so what could it be?  

 

When I got home, I went online to purchase my regular PCR test kit that I use to enter Canada but they are no longer available!  I like to have at least one on hand in case I need to get back quickly.  Fingers crossed that your prayers keep my Dad healthy and new stock will be arriving soon.  

 

Also, @JazzyV, congratulations on your BFF winning a cruise!!

Well seems we’re living the enormous last minute changes, we cancelled our Hawaii flights last night, sigh!  And not looking good for our Holy land cruise in May.

Like already mentioned by Jacqui we had a wonderful day in Guernsey and I saw a lot of pictures this afternoon so I will spare you or at least try  not to post many duplicates .Thank you Jacqui , Sandi , Graham and Lenda for al the pictures ( saves me a lot of work ) 

 

For anybody that will be landing in the future on Guernsey I can highly recommend a walking tour with Annette who will show some nice corners of the town and she has a lot of historical facts which she will share in a playful way .

 

Sandi told you all about this wonderful book about Guernsey during the occupancy in WWII 

 

 

On Annettes Walking Tour everybody is a participant and you don’t know what is in store for you 

 

 

Our best wishes to our friend Jose and strength to Jacqui , we hope he will get better soon .

We stayed in the Fitzpatrick hotel in Belfast and a couple of times at the Brooks hotel Dublin and had breakfast each morning.

@Vict0riann My niece found the Hummer Hearth in Bellingham at the Wild Bird Chalet. It attaches to your bird feeder and has a lightbulb which keeps the liquid from freezing. She thought it might be available at Amazon.
