flamingos Posted January 23, 2022 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I'm looking at April cruises out of Canaveral and some of them have Grand Bahama as a port day, in addition to Nassau and either a sea day or CocoCay. I can't find much information on what there is to see or do there. Has anyone ever been?
mrg0433 Posted January 23, 2022 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I like to take shuttle to Lucaya. Beach and shops. Hotels line the beach.
emeraldead Posted January 23, 2022 #3 Share Posted January 23, 2022 I booked the caves and beach excursion, we aren't kayaking types or would have picked that. Reviews are great and didn't really seem like there's much else except beach/shop available. Can update in 5 weeks hopefully. 🙂
mets123 Posted January 23, 2022 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2022 There's a tour of the Sands brewery that is reasonable.
gkbiiii Posted January 23, 2022 #5 Share Posted January 23, 2022 Royal bought the largest hotel/resort on the island, so look forward to a new casino resort, in the future.
CarolRoy Posted January 24, 2022 #6 Share Posted January 24, 2022 So what hotel/resort? And on what island? Nassau or Grand Bahama?

Nassau or Grand Bahama? they bought it on Grand Bahama, now the development/improvement is on hold. Then they bought that strip of land opposite the docks to develop into a private beach destination, that development is on hold too. What they bought on Grand Bahama island is an established resort that needs renovation. Edited January 24, 2022 by wolfcathorse

Thanks - I thought I had read about the strip of land at the docks in Nassau but couldn't find it again. We've been watching the shells of the homes there deteriorate for years. On one hand, it's a great use of nearby land; on the other, it's taking money away from local businesses.
pstone1 Posted January 24, 2022 #9 Share Posted January 24, 2022 There is a wonderful electric bike tour by CocoNutz. They picked us up at the Port and we rode around the island! We did it with our friends the last time we stopped at Grand Bahama and had a blast!
BND Posted January 24, 2022 #10 Share Posted January 24, 2022 (edited) They used to call the stop Freeport but for some reason they just call the stop Grand Bahama now. It's really Freeport, Grand Bahama. We've been there several times. Other than going to Lucaya, there really isn't much there. The port area has a few shops. We took a taxi to Lucaya one time and walked around. Edited January 24, 2022 by BND
Rare RCCL Fan Posted January 24, 2022 #11 Share Posted January 24, 2022 I was interested too when i first saw it listed last year.... then I realized it was Freeport. haha I've not enjoyed much there. We stayed on the ship the last two times we visited
Rare jean87510 Posted January 24, 2022 #12 Share Posted January 24, 2022 When we were there years ago we rented a car and drove to Gold Rock Beach near Lucayan National park. Absolutely beautiful beach.
mafig Posted January 24, 2022 #13 Share Posted January 24, 2022 There was a casino at Lucaya, but its been closed for several years. I thought the port area was sort of interesting, very active, commercial mostly.
travelnap Posted January 24, 2022 #14 Share Posted January 24, 2022 They do have a nice botanical garden there as well, but I would agree with others, if you are not a beach person there is not a whole lot to do there.
Painter4me Posted January 25, 2022 #15 Share Posted January 25, 2022 This is great news. Grand Bahamas was a great island to visit. I vacationed there many years when the Princess Hotels were operating and the Grand Bahama Vacations would run 4 day trips there. Glad to see Royal opening this resort and bringing more revenue to this island. It’s so different from Nassau.

I believe the sale of the resort fell through; the Bahamian government did not like the bidding process and voided the sale.
