Places to eat in Southampton

Staying in Southampton the night before cruise (June 23).
Looking for recommendations for places to eat in the evening.
Staying at Holiday Inn...so walking distance only.
Thanks

If you are staying at the one on Herbert Walker Blvd - we were there a couple of months ago and had dinner with friends at the hotel - pretty sure it was fish and chips 🙂  We didn't die - but it wasn't very good.  But looking at the nearby options we decided to risk it at the hotel - which after everything at that hotel else we probably should have grabbed a cab 🙂

We’re booked at Moxy Southampton hotel which is two minutes from West Quay Mall.  There are many, many restaurants in the mall,  from fast food options to fine dining.  We’re staying at Moxy for three days prior, so intend to eat at the mall or other restaurants within walking distance.

We eat there several times when we're in town.

Thaikhun and The Real Greek are fab... We also usually hit the food court a couple times. And Nandos, of course, lol... Some great shopping there also, along with the side street with Primark and such...

Pick up some lux chocolate at Hotel Chocolat - absolutely delicious! (Much of the cacao is grown in my country, we always stop there and get some when in the UK)..

Enjoy...

If you want a great Italian, I highly recommend “Bacaro” https://www.bacarosouthampton.com

I am local to Southampton and had a meal there recently. About a 15 min walk from the Holiday Inn. I’ve walked it and it’s fine.

Also (as another poster has stated) the West Quay shopping centre across the street has plenty of chain restaurants. Thai, Italian, Greek, Portuguese- as well as the usual McDonalds, Five Guys, TGI Fridays and Pizza Hut etc.

As others have said, the West Quay Mall is walking distance and has many sit down and fast food restaurants.  One of my favorite meals was the lasagna at L'Osterio in the mall. You can enter the restaurant without going into the mall.  Study the maps or ask the hotel for directions for the quickest way. It's about a 5 minute walk cutting through the parking lot of the two hotels across the street.  The lasagna was different from any lasagna I've ever had, but was delicious. The restaurant was very busy and we were seated under a staircase basically. It wasn't a very good table, but we just wanted to eat. I'd definately go again - but make reservations for a better table.

John Bull will give you great advice.

Personally,  I avoid hotel restaurants !

Hi,

I'm a local and wowzz has summonsed me to this forum.

The dining & entertainment mall attached to West Quay Mall & mentioned in several posts is convenient, very easy to recce and choose. In warm months most of the restaurants have outside tables looking across to the city wall. Wide range of cuisines, but they're all national or international brands - they attract a much younger crowd than yours-truly, who's stuck in the 20th century

All the following are in old-town Southampton, the furthest are no more than a 10-minute walk from the West Quays complex

For independent restaurants I can recommend

Ennio's (Italian) on Town Quay https://www.ennios.co.uk/

and their next-door neighbour La Regata (Spanish) https://www.laregata.co.uk/

For dining pubs ...............

The Duke of Wellington (been a pub for 500+ years) , quintessential  English pub, popular with CC members https://www.dukesouthampton.co.uk/

The Dancing Man pub & micro-brewery (700-year-old wool store with chequered history, some cruisers might remember it as the city's Maritime Museum) http://dancingmanbrewery.co.uk/wool-house-history/

http://dancingmanbrewery.co.uk/ Try their Rag & Bone

The Red Lion https://whatpub.com/pubs/HAS/00548/red-lion-southampton Narrow pub, dates back to King Henry V. The wood-panelled interior and narrow gallery are amazing. Inexpensive pub food. Small pub, no website.

The Standing Order. J D Wetherspoons is a national chain of pubs, most of them in imaginatively re-purposed buildings - the Standing Order was a bank. Both food & drink are very competitively priced. We use Wetherspoons pubs when in central London because London is so expensive. Far from ideal for a romantic dinner, but the fayre is very acceptable and very easy on the pocket. https://www.jdwetherspoon.com/pubs/all-pubs/england/hampshire/the-standing-order-southampton

No problem. I just think it is a shame to travel all the way to the UK, and then eat in a ubiquitous chain restaurant,  when there are so many good pubs about, hence the call to JB.

We stay at the Moxy and absolutely second The Standing Order great atmosphere and beer and very reasonably priced. The food is consistently good and sometimes really good. If you have a stop at Portland / Weymouth there is also a Weatherspoons in the high street there where we seem to end up after a long coastal walk for wine and chicken wings!

We are going to try the Moxy in June.  Love The Standing Order.  We ate breakfast and dinner there, all quite good and reasonably priced.

As another local I can second L'Osteria, though it is often pretty busy.  Casa Brazil is good if you want to start your cruise gluttony early, same with the Cosmo world buffet.

Stopped there on a Disney transatlantic, since DCL don't have a drinks package we made good use of the Wetherspoons app that day!

Hubby and I went to 'Spoons for our wedding breakfast! We had a very quiet (us + 2 witnesses) registry office wedding on a Monday (the cheapest day to get married!) with a big family party the following Saturday, so we were straight out of the Registry Office and across the road to Wetherspoons for fizz and nibbles (not the one in So'ton though).

I "think" it was Duke of Wellington where we had a bunch of folks from a Roll Call meet up. If so, it was the absolutely best Fish and Chips we have ever had. It was walking distance from Premier Inn and others here have said that is close to the Holiday Inn.

Am also a local. You can eat Italian and the usual Shopping Mall type stuff at home. Wetherspoons……. 🤭only if I am dining alone and have something to read😳

There is a great Indian Restaurant between the Holiday Inn and the Ferry Terminal. Kutis. Excellent Indian food that I have never come across in the USA. Have a beer in the Dancing Man across the road. The food is good too if you are not into the spice.

Kuti's was an excellent Indian restaurant in what was the Royal Pier ballroom, and would have been my list but it went into liquidation before Christmas.😟

I think it's still trading, presumably being run by the Official Receiver in the hope of selling it as a going concern, but if it's still trading when you come to Southampton do particularly check out recent reviews
