Carnival has lost control

Decorum seems to be disappearing in the public sphere as many young people feel it is their "right" to do what they please and have fun, and parents are weak at discipline.  There are posters on the Cruise Critic website who complain that the cruise lines do not offer enough activities for teens, but they do not seem to even know how to help their children learn how to behave.

Well, I live here in Philly, and many, many families from PA, NY, and NJ enjoy beach vacations, sometimes for weeks or months in the Summer.

Let's just say many parents also seem to think that their somewhat spoiled children are "safe," and can be on their own doing whatever until very late at night (!).

In response to many, many "rowdy" teens (vandalism, assaults, weapons, drugs, fights, shoplifting, drinking), emergency meetings were just held and a lot of family-friendly beach towns are/have: banned alcohol sales, set earlier curfews, banned backpacks in the evening, closed the beaches early in the evening, closed bathrooms, etc.

I also have to say we just had an unfortunate weekend event in our city of hundreds of young people doing illegal street racing and closing down some of our major roads. There was a fatal police shooting of an 18 year old who was participating in this activity.

I have not really ever experienced any issues on any of my cruises, but I do tend to book a bit longer or more exotic itineraries which may not be as popular with families with children.  There are many posters who book Viking or other similar cruise lines because they want to avoid children!

I live in South Jersey and am delighted at what Wildwood and Ocean City did.

Yep.  those 5 day Bermuda sailings were interesting to say the least.  We were on over Labor Day weekend and it was memorable.

I would agree, but this was an 8 day cruise out of NY.  Our "mistake" was going the week schools let out here - lol.

most definitely a bad idea!!

I am taking my daughter on a cruise next June for her college graduation out of Brooklyn on MSC.  I am doing Yacht club solely because of my experience on the Magic.

I have been on at least 14 cruise, two Carnival cruises last year and I never witness any outrageous behavior described here. Don't get me wrong I have seen some bad behavior-from kids, teenagers, young adults, and older adults. I have seen 20 kids in a hot tub, I have seen young adults in the BVD drinking from wine bottles in the hot tub,  I have seen adults making-out in the pool, I have seen teens fighting outside the teen club, and plenty of old drunks in the casino plus several times I have seen people taken off in handcuffs. But bad behavior can and does happen everywhere. I am going in a few weeks on a ship out of New Oreans and I have heard this is the worst- I will report back.

We were just on Glory out of New Orleans and everything was fine.

Uh..what do you mean by this? Be specific.

Let's be real, children behaving poorly is on the parents. Whether it is their lack of skill, caring, etc. By and large, many of them just don't care. They don't apologize. They want others to weep for their problems and to allow it.

I think ccl needs to make a rule that kids under 12 need to be supervised.  Some punk kids locked my husband and kids and 4 other adults in the basketball court cage yesterday.

I have never seen this before.  Granted I usually cruise during school and spend to much time in the casino. I am taking my grand kids on a short cruise out Galveston at end of June.  I will be with them during the cruise as they are not old enough to run around on their own.  I will keep an eye out and report back.

How is that even possible?

I hope you reported this to guest services.  The fact that people can be locked in there is a serious safety issue.

Now if he was also smoking on the balcony while urinating, you could really double report him and maybe get some action from Carnival. 😒

MAYBE. Some folks down the way were smoking A LOT of pot and stinking up the place and I doubt anything was done. In fact, I know nothing was done bc the smell persisted the entire week.

Yeah Carnival really doesn't care about the behavioral issues on their ships. They are doing very little to prevent it. I know that kids are wild everywhere and people smoke pot everywhere and all that but Carnival can only control their ships, and they are not controlling them. They earn their reputation week after week.

That's crazy. And you are on a long cruise in Europe, right?

Is there a ship phone in the cage? I would think there would be cameras on the area.

Sailed Magic out of Norfolk last month, there was definitely a dog in the port.  Not sure I would say they are doing little to prevent it.  Some ships are even sailing with a dog onboard.  I think they are taking steps.

In comparison to sailing the Magic out of Norfolk last year, there was A LOT less detectable weed smell.

I've cruised with Carnival for about 20 years - I truly miss the Carnival of old, but I know it's likely not coming back. I'll also still cruise with Carnival if the timing/deal is right (like my upcoming Elite cruise to Iceland), but probably not on anything shorter than 7 days. I know the passenger makeup changes every sailing, so maybe it's just bad luck on my part. I hope so, because when Carnival gets things right they put out a great product. But when things go wrong, it's very very wrong - and they don't seem to be in a hurry to fix it.

Now pardon me while I don my flame-proof suit...

I share the thought of needing a flame proof when posting. It is why I don't post a lot.  SO.....Just wanted to say I am sorry for your experiences.  I can only imagine my reaction if the woman had been poking down my back.  Some people just have "no raising" at all no matter the age.  You may be onto something about the longer cruises not having as many issues ( at least some of the time ).  It is sad that it seems to be that way.  We are looking at booking the longer cruises as well.

Your two paragraphs are contradictory but I get your point.

There are now reports in a Fberg group of parents with underage kids sharing slot machines onboard

Yes.  There are not many kids on here, but it only takes a couple.

You do know that 18 year old's can gamble on Carnival? They can't legally drink but they can gamble.

If a person was assaulted the way you state, they would have been in the brig or the entire family confined to their cabin with security. The entire family disembarked at the next port. This would be all over the news.

Yeah, I'm not buying it. They have been on "many" cruises but only have 52 posts???

So you have to post a lot if you go on a lot of cruises?? I guarantee that there are many folks that have never posted and have been on a hundred cruises.

Not everyone spends all of their extra free time on Cruise Critic. Lack of posts doesnt invalidate what someone experienced.

Very true on spending time here...most do not post here but I think the point stands. Assault would have seriously consequences and it would be news worthy.
