Good Friday Morning Dailyites!

You all know that I am not that great with sending out the right thing to say, you are all more eloquent than I am, but this season has been so hard on many of you, with losses of friends and loved ones, for health problems, with life changes.  I am sending you all warm and fuzzy hugs, and I hope that 2024 will bring back joy into your hearts, and good decent doctors into your lives.

I'm not sure I ever passed algebra.  Really.  I suck at math.  How I ever ended up with a minor in physics baffled not only me, but my professors.  My last physics professor put it down to common sense.  Which he said, few people actually have.  LOL, for years after I proved him wrong.....

DH and I have been to Ketchikan twice, both times it was sunny.  Both times we had a great time.

The first time we went, we went on a crab boat in some harbor which was followed by the most fantastic all you can eat Dungeness crab.  Oh my.  We wanted to do that again on this last trip, but our friend wanted to do something not so food oriented, so we took a boat cruise of Misty Fjords.

Good morning from a very cloudy Quartzsite.  So far, the predicted rain has not arrived. but looking at the radar forecast, it should get here in an hour or two.  Currently it is 59F and should reach 62F before dropping back into the 50s.  We are still under a flood watch until 6am tomorrow.  The only things on the agenda are one load of laundry and baking four pies.

My father and DH are good at math, but I'm okay with basic math but not the more advanced math.  We gave our neighbors their Christmas cookies last week.  Zimbabwe Unity Day is a good day to honor.

The Joe Rogan quote is good.

We'll pass on the meal and drink.  I'd prefer a tequila sunrise.  I would like to try the wine, too.

We have been to Ketchikan at least 15 times by cruise ship, and once on the Alaska Marine Highway, but we didn't go ashore that time.  I'll look for some pictures in a bit.

The formation of the United States Golf Association in 1894 is important those of our Dailyites who enjoy the game.  My grandmother gave me gold lessons, but I was never good at the game.  Miniature golf is more my speed.

@Crazy For Cats  Welcome home Jake and Juan.  Safe travels today.

@Suslor  Welcome home, and safe travels.

@kochleffel  Congratulations on the great grade.

@grapau27  Graham, I'm sorry Pauline's BFF had to take her DH to the hospital for a head scan.  I hope it's nothing serous.  I'm glad you and Pauline will be there for them.  Thank you for the explanations of Mathematics Day and Cookie Exchange Day.

@summer slope  Dixie, I'm glad your mouth is healing nicely.

@cat shepard  Safe travels to New England and enjoy time with your niece and nephew and their families.

@cruising sister  It sounds like you have a full day of fun planned.  It's too bad that your DDIL has to work (a four letter word) and can't join the fun.

@RMLincoln  Maureen, I hope the planned closing of your condo in Maryland goes smoothly.  We closed once closed on a house sale long distance, and it went according to plan.  Thanks for the picture of your grandnephew.  He is really keeping his eyes on someone.

@Heartgrove  Jack, thanks for the update on Sam and the good news about his condition.  He is a handsome fellow.

@0106  Tina, thank you for sharing Calvin Coolidge's quote.  We learned many years ago that Christmas was time with family not a day on the calendar.

@1ANGELCAT  Our condolences to your frim Lynda on the passing of her DH and her cousin.  I hope all goes well in Hershey today.

@aliaschief  Bruce, that is interesting about the woman on the roll call, and her dresses.  My parents had friends that booked two cabins for a world cruise -- one for them and one for their clothes.

@dfish  Debbie, I hope you can persuade Sue to paint a picture of one of the pictures you shared.

@Nickelpenny  Pennie, you had an interesting day yesterday.  I'm glad you and the doctor next to you could help the passenger with the medical problem.

@ger_77  Gerry, I'm glad you and your DH arrived safely in Calgary and did not have bad road conditions.  Enjoy your time with the family.

@kazu  Jacqui, our condolences to you, your DBIL and family on the death of his mother.

I'm going to look for some different pictures of Ketchikan.

Lenda

Thanks Lenda @Quartzsite Cruiser  unfortunately day after boarding I was diagnosed with Covid and spent the whole cruise in bed. Thankfully my DH and DGS carried on. I had avoided it the entire pandemic, have all the shots, etc but it caught up with me. Hopefully a few days at home will let me recoup as we’re scheduled to leave 1/2 for seven weeks Asia cruise. Happy holidays everyone. Susan

Blessinhs and prayers to all on our lists.

Condolences to all the family. What a sad situation at any time but it seems doubly so during the Holidays.

Thank you Lenda.

It seems to be a minor stroke.

He has been discharged with low dose aspirin and another appointment in a few weeks.

Graham, that is good news.  I hope he recovers completely.

Our first visit to Ketchikan was in June 1993, in the pre-digital age on the old Sky Princess.  We have been back there many times, mostly on BHB's and in all kinds of weather.  I have too many pictures for one post.  It may even take three posts.

In 2012 and 2014 we visited Ketchikan five times on Amsterdam.  We generally do multiple b2bs in Alaska figuring we'll get at least one decent day in the ports.

In 2012, we booked two tours using 2 for 1 coupons from the Great Alaskan Tour Saver.  The first one was a float plane flight to Misty Fjords.  Most of my pictures are the same as those posted earlier.  This tour was interesting, but it is one and done, since we came within seconds of flying into one of the mountains.  Fortunately, the fog cleared just in time for the pilot to pull up and turn very sharply.

P1000540.thumb.JPG.b3b29c8a4c8eabbbc503bca3731fb45d.JPG

We landed on calm bay and had the opportunity to step out on the pontoon.  After the near miss, neither of us nor the other couple wanted to do that.

P1000566.thumb.JPG.37ee5b6dd7f5cadf6d0eb4328fac1a82.JPG

The next time the Amsterdam took us to Ketchikan, we took the Duck Tour.  It was disappointing as we did not spend very long on the water, and most of the time was touring downtown.

In 2012, we did b2b2bs on Amsterdam.  We arranged to take the Bering Sea Crab Fisherman's Tour on the Aleutian Ballad.  The ship had been a crab fishing boat and was featured in season 2 of Deadliest Catch when it was caught by a wave and rolled 360 degrees.  They showed that scene from the show on the boat.

P1040259.thumb.JPG.eece6cc81cfbadddd6d796ded2ccac7a.JPG

It is illegal to feed Bald Eagles in Alaska.  However, the tour took us to an island owned by one of the native corporations where they also owned the surrounding water, and the law did not apply.  The crew cut up bait fish and threw them toward the eagles.  It was amazing to watch the eagles catch the fish.

Another part of the tour was demonstrating the various crab traps and other traps.  They would haul the traps up and show us the catch, which was then released.

P1040315.thumb.JPG.0f5d04eb56fa97418ef542c8bbd5d478.JPG

We also learned that an octopus is really very, very floppy.

P1040342.thumb.JPG.07924ae4839c0f0e284b93391b376964.JPG

On one of the subsequent visits to Ketchikan, we took an off road tour featuring Tom-Toms, an Israeli built ATV.  DH did not like how it drove.  It was wet, misty and cold up in the mountains, but it turned out it was dry and sunny in town.

P1040953.thumb.JPG.5038f836182abbfc01ff7f18138dae84.JPG

We were the height of fashion that day.

P1040956.thumb.JPG.bf539d44269682cce0044c99ff8e17d7.JPG

We stopped at one point to see a waterfall and to learn about the different plants and trees.

While I have been to Ketchikan many times, the trip in 2002 stands out.  It started with a land tour by a Canadian company that flew to Inuvik, then spent a day at Tuktoyaktuk on Hudson Bay, then drove down the Dempster Highway to Skagway and boarded the Zaandam for a 4-day cruise to Vancouver.

I was the only American in a group of about 25 and we celebrated Canada Day in Whitehorse before boarding Zaandam.

As the lone American I took on the role of welcoming the group to the USA for our special day, giving each member a memento bookmark from Baltimore, and then later in the day watching Ketchikan's 4th of July paarade:

Good morning from a soggy Pacific Northwest!

The rain is really coming down at the moment and today is supposed to be wet but then we get clearer days.

I'll be taking cookies to a few friends today as well as doing the last minute shopping. I'm hoping that will be my last trek to town until after the holidays. I should run to the recycle but that's a backroads, get out for a drive, event and can do that Saturday or Sunday.

Yesterday I got almost all the wrapping done - just need to do the stockings for DS and DDIL. Now it's on to cleaning the house and getting organized for Christmas Day.

Since all our cruises have been to Alaska out of Seattle I've been to Ketchikan close to 23 times. One cruise, on the Nieuw Amsterdam in 2021 (after the restart) we had propulsion issues and limped into Sitka. We ended up missing Ketchikan and making a courtesy stop at Victoria (couldn't get off) before getting to Seattle. The issue was fixed there and the next sailing continued on.

Happy Friday!

Good morning.

Happy Friday.   Thank you to @kazu Jacqui for the daily and for stepping up to fill in for Rich.

Thank you to Vanessa @JazzyV for the Cares and celebration list.   I hope you get some relief from your leg pain.

Thank you to the F&B ladies—Debbie @dfish, Ann @cat shepard and Dixie @summer slope for your dedication in making sure that we are fed and hydrated each day.

I must confess, I will pass on the meal and probably the drink.

I have been to Montepulciano and while I may not have had the exact wine in today’s Daily, all their wines are wonderful.

I have been to Ketchikan but my photos are not on this Ipad.

I was fairly good in Math but did not pursue it.  Set my sights on learning Spanish and becoming fluent in it.  My neighbor brought us some homemade cookies the other day.  We were grateful for them.  They were delicious.

I did not sleep well last night.  Too much on my mind.
We were encouraged to set up a Patient Portal with the Neurology Office.  DH does not use it, nor does he know how.  So it is up to me.  The results of the Mini Mental Exam done the first day were uploaded and that was okay, I guess.  Be got 26 out of 30 correct.

Yesterday the results of the MRI were uploaded, and this girl is trying to make sense of the report.  From what I can see there is a cause of concern.   I did not share any of it with him.  However, all I could think of, is how am I going to handle all this by myself as things get worse.  Now I should probably wait until we see the Doctor, but that is not until Jan. 11.  I really think they should wait to upload these results until the Doc can explain what is going on rather than leaving people to their own devices and wonder and fear the worse.
I shed a lot of tears last night

As you all know I have no family or support system.

Today i will get the house in order.  Tomorrow we will go to Fresh Market and pick up our order for Christmas Day.  That is the best decision we made for dinner.  We will have enough for leftovers during the week.  That will give me a break.

Hope everyone has a good day.

God Bless,

Terri

Today i will get the house in order.  Tomorrow we will go to Fresh Market and pick up our order for Christmas Day.  That is the best decision we made for dinner.  We will have enough for leftovers during the week.  That will give me a break.

Hope everyone has a good day.

God Bless,

Terri

It is worrying reading reports without an explanation by a doctor for several weeks.

Although we can't be with you in person my support and I'm sure all dailyites support is here for you.

Take care Terri and I hope you can have a nice Christmas and New year.

God bless.

Good morning from Durango where it is dry and cold. A storm is supposed to move in tonight, but it looks like it will be mainly in the higher elevations. We may get some snow, but more likely rain which will freeze.... so my outing will be done today.

@Cruzin TerriI know telling you not to worry is futile because worry is what we all do.... but take a deep breath and wait for the Doctor's appointment. Those results are hard to interpret.... even for the doctor's at times... too many variables.

I will be picking up some things today for the trip... putting stuff into my safety deposit box and generally trying to tie up loose ends. Still debating a checking my bag or trying to deal with only a carry on.... have to see what fits and what doesn't. I know I will have to do some quick shopping in San Diego.

Take care all. I think my Christmas is going to be very quiet this year and that is probably a very good thing. I will be sending out Christmas emails to friends and family.... I did not get cards done this year.

Good morning all!

As Karen @luvteaching said, it's a very soggy morning here.  Supposedly tomorrow will be sunny, we'll see!

Math was always my worst subject -- if it's genetic as Gerry @ger_77 said, I must have inherited my Mom's lack of mathematical abilities because my Dear Dad was an accountant.  DH also majored in accounting, so he takes care of that for us!

When I was younger I participated in a lot of cookie exchanges.  I'm not sure how many times we've been to Ketchikan, but we were there twice this year.  Photos to follow.  I'll pass on the drink and red wine, the meal would be good but with chicken.  Tonight we'll be having leftover beef stew.

I got very good news last night from my sister -- DBIL's latest PSA test showed a marked improvement since his treatment started.  His PSA went down from 6.9 to 3.85 so we're all celebrating that!

Bon Voyage @Nickelpenny!

Bon Voyage Rich @richwmn -- we'll see you in 11 days!!!

Our first cruise was in 2004 on the Amsterdam.  Sandi @StLouisCruisers we also went on a kayaking tour out of Ketchikan!

I loved this piece of art work outside a shop

In September we were in Ketchikan on the Celebrity Solstice.  We had a tour to the Lumberjack show (corny but surprisingly fun and good) and to the Saxman Native Village.

They put on a very good show, and we enjoyed it all.

One of many totem poles in the village.

And of course Dolly's House.  On another cruise (12-day Denali) my BFF and I took the tour through Dolly's House.

Good morning and thanks all!

@RMLincoln sweet baby!

We too have been to Montepulciano,  and enjoy their wines.  Just to be confusing the wine today is from Abruzzo, not Montepulciano but is Montepulciano grapes.   The wines from Montepulciano are Vin nobile and Grand Rosso de Montepulciano.   Now I need to look up if they are Montepulciano grapes🤷‍♀️

Our first cruise was to Alaska, to see how we liked cruising. Well we all know how that worked out.  We actually enjoyed breakfast with the Canadian pilot.  People think it’s cold, but when we visited the first time in July it was in the  low 80s and absolutely delightful with beautiful flowers.   Much warmer than Norway!

@aliaschiefgiggled over the cartoon of the pilot with the IPad, there is a lot of truth to that!  I was seated beside a pilot trainer on Alaska, and it is all on the IPad!  Fascinating!

Good day from damp, cloudy Western Washington.  DW and I will be leaving soon to pick up her car from the body shop.  She had a minor fender bender a couple of weeks ago and it should be ready this morning.  I am always learning something from the Daily.  Have been to Ketchikan many times starting in 1996 on the old Noordam, but just learned today that it was on the island of Revillagigedo.  And although I have a degree in math, I first learned of the Indian math prodigy Ramanujan here on the Daily.  I received my bachelors degree in math and masters in education while still on active duty in the Navy.  They had a program with visiting professors where you went to school Friday night, all day Saturday and half a day Sunday until you got your degree.  Got the math degree while stationed in the Philippines with Laverne College and the education degree while stationed on Oahu with Pepperdine University.  So I retired from the Navy as a Master Chief with a Masters Degree.

Alan Ritchon the actor aka Reacher in the hit Amazon show grew up in our small town. His mother still lives here and I’m pretty sure he was behind me at checkout in the grocery store today. No one bothered him. With those biceps I wouldn’t want to bother him!
