The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday May 1st, 2024

Recommended Posts

Thank you Rich, Sandi, Vanessa, Tina, Ann, and Dixie, Hugs to Jacqui and Bruno and extra prayers to RMLinclon DH, Annie & Chuck, and Terri & Tana.

I like all three of today’s days and the quote is interesting.  A great day in UK history.

I have been to Juneau many times, starting in 1991 on my first overnight “cruise:” on Alaska ferry Matanuska.

I’ll pass on the meal.  My alternative is Apple Pear, and Cucumber Sald, Surf & Turf (just turf for me) and Almond and Orange Cake as served on MS Nieuw Statendam May 1, 2019:

I was due to have a tooth pulled Friday but it’s been put off to go to a specialist rather than my regular dentist, due to me taking a bone strengthener.

🐇🐇🐇. Good morning everyone.  It’s gray and cool here today. A nice collection of days to choose from.  I like the quote.  I also like the meal and drink suggestions.  We visited today’s port in 2018 and enjoyed it very much.  We rented a car and visited Mendenhall Glacier and the drove to the Shrine of St. Thérèse where we watched whales swimming in the channel.  Praying for those on our prayer list.  Cheers to those who are celebrating happy events. 🍾

Did you continue your journey to Eagle Beach?

Rabbit 🐇 Rabbit 🐇 White Rabbit 🐰

Today we celebrate LLC - love, loyalty and couples - all worthy of celebrating. Thank you @grapau27 for the detailed info.

Pass on the drink (rum) and wine (mushrooms & $$), the meal sounds great!

I love Juneau - 1st visit was May 2018, most recent was last May 2023 on Eurodam. I would be there later this month, but had to cancel that cruise; fingers crossed we go in Sept. I will check for pictures. Thank you @StLouisCruisers @Quartzsite Cruiser @DeniseT @ottahand7 and everyone for sharing your beautiful pictures.

@ottahand7 thanks for the swan snippet.

@StLouisCruisers No Doodles in our house; your pictures are awesome - the owl is cute; I'm sure the bracelet owner considers you her angel.

Hugs @kazu

Temp was 73° headed to wet 82°, rain is expected to move in around 5.

Prayers 🙏 and positive thoughts for all.

Today's sunrise is from my 2017 Crystal Symphony cruise from San Diego to New York.  May 1 was a sea day from San Diego to Puerto Vallarta.

Bunny, bunny, bugs bunny. I guess one day late.

Thanks for the Fleet Update and General Info from all contributors!

Juneau, Alaska. First there in 1990, last there 2022. The glacier has melted quite a bit over those years!

Looking back through my pictures of Juneau, I realized the 12 Visits I mentioned earlier were the ones on HAL.  We have also been there three times on Princess and once on the Matanuska.  I've also found a few more different pictures, many from the times we rented a car for the day.

In 2012, we did b2b2bs on Amsterdam.  The second time we were in Juneau we took a cruise on the steamboat Susanna.

There are remnants of an old mine and ore processing plant on Douglas Island across the Gastineau Channel from Juneau.  This is part of the facility that can been seen from the ship as you sail down the channel.

You can get to the Treadwell Mine Trail at the south end town on Douglas Island.  These are a couple of the buildings still left in 2012.

We have also driven as far north of Juneau as Highway 7 goes.   There are several nice beaches along the highway.

DH 's camera shots tell you when they were taken, but mine dont.  I have to rely on memory.... so I have no idea what year we were in Juneau.  It was 2018, as it was our 9th anniversary- We did the same excursion that @ottahand7 did, but since it was Carnival it had a different name, Salmon is Alaska, Hanging Gardens and Mendenhall Glacier.

At the fishery when we arrived we scared off a seal that was climbing the ladder to get to the salmon that were headed home....

It was cloudy every day except for Glacier Bay (sunny, but no camera batteries) and in Ketchikan.... We went back to Alaska in 2023 on our first HAL cruise.  And I would love to go back again.

No good news for DH. for yesterday and again today I am still not ready to talk about it (it would take too long). Will catch up later.

I read today is also International Doodle Dog Day, for all the variations of doodles.  The golf course owner and his wife moved up the street from us, and I see them walking their doodle a lot.  It's huge and the wife is quite petite so sometimes it looks like she's giving it all she's got to hold onto that leash.  Their dog looks very well groomed and handsome.  Anyone here have a doodle of some kind?

Sort of - we have an Eskipoo - American Eskimo & poodle.  Nice size -14 years old & about 25 lbs.

Good morning all!

Another good selection of days.  I'll pass on the drink and red wine, but would like the first recipe and will make it tomorrow. Thank you Tina @0106! We love basil pesto and I have all the ingredients.  We've been to Juneau several times and will be there again next year on the 28-day Alaska Solstice cruise. Not sure what we'll be doing this time, probably rent a car and drive to Mendenhall Glacier again...

Today I'm driving up to Bellingham to see my BFF Barbara.  We usually meet in Mt. Vernon (half-way) but because of her busy life lately and having the grandchildren staying with her while Amber is hospitalized, I said I'd come up there this time to make it easier for her. It's always nice to go to my hometown anyway. 🙂   I hope to learn more about Amber's situation and how this all happened.  The last I heard, the doctors were baffled too.

On our first Alaska cruise in 2004 we went kayaking in Juneau and Ketchikan. This was from Juneau.

One time we rented a car and drove to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center and walked to the glacier and Nugget Falls.

Our last Alaska cruise was last year and we had a drizzly day in Juneau.

We would have taken the Mt. Roberts tram but the visibility would obviously be bad at the top.

And we wanted to get a drink at the Red Onion Saloon, but it was packed wall to wall with people and a very long wait.  So we passed.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily. Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit.

Law and Loyalty are important. I'll salute those fortunate to be couples. Interesting quote. I'll pass on the meal (not a pesto fan). Yes to the drink (with Coke Zero). Pass on the drink due to cost. I have been to Juneau. A good day in history.

It's another warm and sunny day here. I slept about 6 hours, more like my normal amount. No special plans today.

@StLouisCruisers Thanks for our start today. Cool on the owl nest at DD's house! Great Juneau photos. The stocking is coming along and looking great.

@kazu Thinking of you today on this sad anniversary.

@dfish Safe travels today.

@Denise T Nice photos.

@smitty34877 I'm glad you saw the Rheumatologist and got some treatment recommendations. I'm glad you have someone you can call to help with lifting Tana.

@grapau27 That looks like a nice lunch out.

@RMLincoln I hope DH is holding his own with the pressures and massages needed for his eye.

@ottahand7 The swans are beautiful. And thanks for the Juneau photos.

@cunnorl Sorry to hear about the AC woes.

@Quartzsite Cruiser Lovely Juneau photos from many trips there.

@Cruzin Terri I hope your internet and communication troubles are now permanently behind you. I hope you and Jim are doing ok. Appreciate your Juneau photos.

@ger_77 I'm glad to hear that Maurice has an unofficial go-ahead for the TAVR.

@marshhawk I hope there are some answers for Chuck today.

@Cruising-along Great photos.

Prayers for the Care List and Cheers for those Celebrating.

Thanks. Very much Vanessa @JazzyV for remembering the day 💔

and thanks everyone for the very kind words.

It’s a mixed bag of emotions today.  2nd anniversary of Jose’s death and the first anniversary of Ivan’s “Gotcha” day.    it’s sadder than happier though.

Thanks again.

For a lot of cruisers, Alaska is their first cruise.  It was for us.  I remember back in 2001 at Thanksgiving dinner.  DDIL said “I'd love to take an Alaskan cruise”.  DH said “me too”!  DS and I looked at them and said, "uhhh, okay!!".  DDIL contacted a travel agent and set it all up for July 2002.  We were such newbies we didn't even know we should fill out all the paperwork online ahead of time so it took us a while to get checked in.  But we had a wonderful trip and that is what got us started on cruising.

Way back on July 17, 2002 we were in Juneau on Star Princess, where DS and DDIL went horseback riding at the Mendenhall glacier.  They were wearing rain capes since it was a little showery at times.  They enjoyed it a lot!  Aww, they look so young.

Not to mention the glacier!

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

Meanwhile DH and I walked around town and went up the Mount Roberts Tramway.  Here's the Star Princess below us.

A wet downtown.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

The sun came out as we prepared to leave that day, of course.  Doesn't it always happen that way?  Here I am watching the sea planes take off and land.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

I remembered something about our first cruise to Alaska in 2002.  We were out on the decks in Glacier Bay moving about the ship to get different views, when I looked down and saw a diamond tennis bracelet laying there.  I put it in my coat pocket and finished watching the glaciers.  A half hour later I went to Guest Services and dropped off the bracelet, giving my details.  Right in the middle of it all, another clerk was taking a call from a woman who was distraught over losing her mother's tennis bracelet which was quite unique.  It was passed down to her.  They had her describe it and it matched the one I brought in.  So she came down to retrieve it, and sent DH and I a bottle of champagne as thanks.  I always hope someone will do the same if I lost a piece of jewelry or a camera, etc.  This is where I found the bracelet, either just before or just after the photo was taken.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

Whew talk about someone looking young.  Shocking to see us 22 years ago!

In 2009 we did back to back Alaska cruises on Sapphire Princess.  That worked out very well since the first week the weather in Glacier Bay was so bad, and we had to turn around and leave to try to beat a huge storm in the Gulf of Alaska.  On the second segment of our cruise the weather in Glacier Bay was sunny, windless, and almost warm.  The photos turned out great!

We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary on these cruises.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

In 2009 in Juneau we took a long walk around town, and even walked to see what the Governor's Mansion looked like.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

After our tour about town, we boarded a local bus that took tourists out to Mendenhall Glacier since we hadn't seen it in 2002.  Here is the glacier again, and an interesting display of glacier ice.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

The next week we docked in Juneau on Sept. 16 but the weather was rainy and miserable, so the only photos taken that day were of another ship coming into port, and our Captain’s Circle party followed by formal night dinner that evening.  Looks like the alternating weather forecasts for the two week cruise was still holding true.

For our 50th anniversary (actual date) we did the 14 day Amsterdam Alaska cruise in August-September 2019.  It was a great day weather-wise when we visited Juneau.  The seaplanes are always fun to watch.

00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhG

We got off to walk around thanks to that great weather.  Besides you have to work hard to burn calories while cruising!

Our 1st cruise was also to Alaska with my DH's best friend from kindergarten & his wife.  Rainy, windy, lived in polar fleece & raingear all week & my back went out....said no more cruising for me....fast forward a few years & a Mexican riviera cruise changed my mind but we don't cruise as much & for as long as some of you.

Good morning.  Finally, the guy who has been working on our leaky roof off and on was here today.  He is also working on another neighbor's roof that has the same problem, but with more places leaking.  That roof has given the roofer some more ideas of what the problem may be, and he is going to be back in a few days to try another fix in a few areas.  Fingers are crossed that this time it will be fixed.  It seems the problem might be where the metal sheets overlap and are no longer staying together.  If and when, the leaks are stopped, then we'll worry about getting the ceiling repaired.

Good morning. I have been to Juneau twice and enjoyed the trip to the top of Mt Robert’s. We also went on a whale watch tour that was great. I like the recipes, thanks to Tina @0106.

I will celebrate doodle day as my grand dog is a lovely example of one. My smaller pooch, Fred is a cockapoo and I see many similarities in behavior.

The rheumatologist remarked yesterday that I appear to be under a lot of stress. She felt the problem was more muscular than structural so now my job is to correct poor postures and utilize heat, ice and pain patches with lidocaine. I found it difficult to drive due to the pain and spasm but I am glad I got her opinion. The main problem here is that I can’t lift Tana and have to text for assistance. I will continue to do this because I think  I made myself worse  by trying to manage on my own. At least they are close by!

@RMLincoln, I was so sorry to read of the complications with Richard’s newly operated eye. It had to be especially difficult to be attending the memorial service at the same time.

@kazu, Jacqui, Sending hugs and everything good your way today.

@marshhawk, Annie, I am also thinking if you and Chuck today and everyday.

Have a great day everyone.

Terry, I'm glad you got some answers and some solutions yesterday.  I'm also glad you are getting help when you need to lift Tana.  Cute pictures of cute dogs.

Good morning to all.

Happy Wednesday,

Thank you to Sandi @StLouisCruisers for having the Daily and Fleet Report ready so bright and early today.

Thank you to Roy @rafinmd for the Maps and to Vanessa @JazzyV for the lists.  I am so glad that you are sleeping well and seem to have conquered the pain in your leg.

Thank you to Tina @0106 for the meal recipe, Ann @cat shepard for the wine write-up and to Dixie @summer slope for the drink recipe.  And last, but not least, to Graham @grapau27 for the decryption of the days we celebrate.

Interesting quote.

I have been to Juneau, Alaska.  It was the summer of 2007.  It was the first HAL cruise we took, but not our first cruse.  That was on the Home Lines back in 1986 to Bermuda, when I swore I would never go on another cruise.  So much for swearing!

I will pass on the meal, since somehow Pesto does not agree with my tummy.

I like Cuba Libre and had many while I was a student in Ponce, Puerto Rico many moons ago.

The wine sounds yummy, but above my budget.

Jacqui @kazu Thnking of you today and sending virtual hugs.

Terry @smitty34877 You and your family are always in my prayers.

Annie @marshhawk Thinking of you and Chuck and hope you are both doing well.

Maureen @RMLincoln I am sorry for the latest setback with your DH and hope it is temporary.

Prayers for all on the Cares list.  Hope I didn’t miss anyone.

Cheers to those celebrating and cruising.

I am happy to report that all my communication equipment is up and running.  The Hargray technician paid us a visit yesterday after another day of outage on Monday.  I called and expressed my displeasure at their service yet again.,  This time they did something about it.

So far all is working well.

So we have a beautiful sunny day here in the Low Country of South Carolina.  So far we are holding our own.

Have a great day and as always,

God Bless,

Terri

Terri, I'm glad all your communication devices are working again.  Sometimes holding your own is very good.

Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit.  Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Law Day, hmm, reminds me of my former career.  I will definitely celebrate couples day and be grateful we still are a couple.  Loyalty day is interesting - thanks for the explanation; I thought it was just a day to remind ourselves that loyalty is a worthy trait.

MAY.thumb.jpg.9f6f34fadb248fb9e6adf70644f075bb.jpg

Well we haven't heard anything officially, but there is hope for Maurice's procedure.  Because I hadn't received a response to Monday's phone call, I called again yesterday morning and spoke with the TAVR co-ordinator, reiterating that he wasn't getting better, just worse with more dizziness, etc.  She said she couldn't tell me anything officially, but she has him penciled in for the valve replacement on May 22nd, but it had to still go through the channels and we would be receiving a letter in the mail to verify it.  She did say though, that June 5th was an alternate in case something happened that May 22nd didn't come through.  At least there's something to look forward to for him - and thank you all for your wonderful thoughts and prayers as we play this seemingly endless waiting game.

@kazuI have you in my heart as you commemorate Jose's passing; you just know he's looking down on you with the same amount of love you gave him.

@RMLincolnprayers that your DH's eye pressures start to come to more normal levels.

@marshhawksending good vibes to you & @catmando as you make your way to the dermatologist today; I do hope they'll be able to do something to relieve Chuck's pain and his cheek as well.

Our friend Wayne received his pacemaker yesterday and called around 7PM to say he was home and feeling fine.  Although his A-fib is still a major issue, the pacemaker is there and he will go back in 30 days for the second procedure - the cardiac ablation so the pacemaker will take over full time.  This afternoon is the time when the guys in the band usually get together, but this time we're including the wives/significant others, so there will be maybe 8 or 10 of us enjoying coffee and chats instead of just the men.  Because the coffee shop is in a mall, I may suggest after a while that the ladies take off for some retail therapy and let the guys have some time alone - I think they might like that.

I'm not a huge fan of rum, so will pass on the drink, and would probably like the wine, but wow $$$... I'd substitute @kochleffel's alternate.  We both love basil pesto, so I think today's menu suggestion would be one we would enjoy.  We've got some leftover pulled pork from the other day that will be rolled in tortillas and served with coleslaw at the kitchen table tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, and in turmoil.  Cheers to all with celebrations today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Gerry

Gerry, that is indeed good news that your DH has an unofficial date for his new valve and a backup date.  I'm glad Wayne is doing well after receiving the pacemaker.  I hope the cardiac ablation solves the afib problem.

Annie, thank  you for your Juneau pictures.  I'm sorry there was no good news for your DH.  We are all here for both of you when you are ready to talk about it.  Otherwise, you both will be in our thoughts.

Rabbit x 3.   Good morning and thanks all!
@smitty34877 glad you got checked out, and as hard as it is to do. Please take care of YOU.  There’s a reason on the airplane they say to put your oxygen mask on first.  Hugs!
@kazu anniversaries are always hard, but sending you extra hugs today as your remember Jose!
@ger_77 oh I am so relieved to hear your news.   Our friend had that surgery in November and was able to go to Hawaii in January, truly a wonderful outcome.  So hoping that will be the case for Maurice as well!

Loving all the doodle photos.

The Fault in the stars is such a great book.  I am reading another great one, the Covenant of Water,  over 700 pages and I will be truly sad when I finish.

We've enjoyed Juneau a couple of times

🐇🐇, and good morning, Dailyites.  I'm thinking of you all today - Jacqui, Annie and Chuck, Terry and Tana, Vanessa (yay!), Gerry's DH, Bruno,  everyone having a troubled time.

We have been to Juneau many times, usually on cruises, but once flown in by DD when she was flying out of Haines.  Actually, DD arrives from Gander tomorrow for a two-week visit, so you won't be hearing much from me, today we are changing Pat's office into the guest room for the summer.  May, June and July are booked up...  Pat's desk will be in our bedroom so he can work.

The last time we were in Juneau, in 2022, I took no pictures, I had Covid, but in 2019 we took the tramway up Mt. Roberts to measure our wingspan in comparison with an eagle...

One of the Alaska cruise highlights for the XBGuys has become fish tacos at Deckhand Dave's in Juneau.  Neither of us normally eat lunch.  So, when we stop in Juneau we always have a light dinner.

The French Fries are darned good, too.

Fish Tacos and French Fries.  Would that be fusion cuisine?

Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit!

Not a white rabbit, but we two yellow chicks (they will be white when their feathers come in), that escaped their eggshells during the night!  Grandson will be a happy fella, when he comes over today.  Few more eggs in the incubator, hope some more hatch.  These are to help replace his ducks and chickens that were killed in February by a neighbors dog.  This is his 4-H project.

We have been to Juneau several times!  First time was in 2009, seems like yesterday!  We enjoyed it so much, that I actually looked at taking a nursing position there, but finally decided we were to involved with the Grands to be that far away.

Check out the various webcams Juneau is having a pretty sunshine day today!

Take Care

Denise

@kazu Hugs to you.  Holding you close today.
@atexsix Bruno, I am glad you trusted us enough to tell us how things were going and how you were feeling.   This is a hard time, but we will send you warm thoughts whenever you need them.

I am near Toledo killing time.  I’m going to a friend’s presentation in Detroit at 6:00 pm and I am way too early.

Denise, I hope all the eggs hatch and that your DGS 4-H project is not affected by this.  I'm sorry the neighbor's dog killed his ducks and chickens.

Good afternoon, it's sunny but windy here today.  Pesto chicken sounds good, so does the drink.  We've been to Juneau.  It was our 1st cruise, our travel agency had a talk about Holland America and Alaska, we signed up!  I'd love to go back again.  We went to Mendenhall Glacier and did the St. Roberts tram.  We saw a bear as we were hiking at the top...it was far away! LOL!  We got back to the ship and sat on our veranda watching the eagles flying by!

@kazuthinking about you today as you remember your dear Jose.

@ger_77it's good to hear that you at least have a tentative surgery date!

@marshhawksorry to hear that DH did not get any good news, prayers for you both.

@StLouisCruisersyour stocking is beautiful!

Prayers for everyone who needs them and cheers for the rest.  Blessings on the rest of your day!
