The Fleet Report and Daily for Wednesday May 1st, 2024

Recommended Posts

🐇🐇🐇. Good morning everyone.  It’s gray and cool here today. A nice collection of days to choose from.  I like the quote.  I also like the meal and drink suggestions.  We visited today’s port in 2018 and enjoyed it very much.  We rented a car and visited Mendenhall Glacier and the drove to the Shrine of St. Thérèse where we watched whales swimming in the channel.  Praying for those on our prayer list.  Cheers to those who are celebrating happy events. 🍾

Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit...  I've learned this from @grapau27 and @puppycanducruise!!  I'd never heard of it before!!!  But now, I say it!  Even from Texas!!!

Thank you for the reports!!

I love that it's Loyalty Day and for the explanation of that!!  I always have known May Day and as a child we would hang little paper baskets of flowers on some of our neighbor's door knobs!  Also, growing up we would have a May Day celebration and do May Pole dancing on the front lawn of the school!

Thank you for the recipe for Pesto baked chicken -- sounds very yummy!!!

I've been to Juneau twice and LOVE Alaska!!  I think Ketchikan was my favorite port...

I read today is also International Doodle Dog Day, for all the variations of doodles.  The golf course owner and his wife moved up the street from us, and I see them walking their doodle a lot.  It's huge and the wife is quite petite so sometimes it looks like she's giving it all she's got to hold onto that leash.  Their dog looks very well groomed and handsome.  Anyone here have a doodle of some kind?

My child is a groomer and they do MANY, MANY Doodles...  I'll have to pass that information on!!!  We have a Welsh Pembroke Corgi.

Thank you for today’s FR & D, Sandi! Roy, thank you for our maps and being our historian.  Another lovely morning. Bindi & I had a super long walk and had a close encounter of the fawn kind. 😎 This years twins posed for a great pic.

But even my most trusted weather sources warn that Florida Summer will be here soon. I knew it couldn’t last.

Vanessa, thank you for sharing our happenings.  Praying that you never go on the Cares list again - at least for your right leg, numbness or lack of sleep. I am thrilled you slept for 9 hours!

Bindi walks, chores, HIIT and a dip in the pool are on my agenda today.

Prayers for all who need our support. Those suffering from pain, debilitating conditions, the loss of a loved one, trauma. The caregivers.

Maureen, I hope Richard’s eye is better.
Gerry, praying that Maurice hears SOON.

Annie, keeping both you & Chuck in my prayers.
Terry, as always, keeping you & Tana in my prayers.

Cheers to all who are celebrating.

May we each find a reason to smile today.

Le Gay 2020

I would love a taste of this Bordeaux red. Just reading the descriptions tells me I would enjoy this one. But it is out of my price range. A decent number of distributors, but you won’t find this one at CVS. Online prices start at $99.99.

Professional Ratings

  • 98James Suckling

So much black mushroom to the dark fruit, such as blackberries and bramble berries. Extremely aromatic. Full-bodied, yet refined and polished, with lovely tannins and fantastic typicity and complexity. It’s so multidimensional and structured, yet there’s a weightless character and personality to it. Thought-provoking and sophisticated. Real Pomerol.

  • 96Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Deep purple-black colored, the 2020 Le Gay erupts from the glass with scents of molten licorice and dark chocolate, giving way to a tantalizing core of baked black cherries, prunes and blackberry preserves, plus a hint of cardamom. The full-bodied palate is rich and decadent, featuring layers of black fruits and exotic spices with a firm yet velvety texture and seamless freshness, finishing with epic length. A hedonic powerhouse!
    Barrel Sample: 94-96+
  • 94Jeb Dunnuck

A surprisingly up-front, soft, almost mid-weight effort from this chateau, the 2020 Chateau Le Gay offers a pretty perfume of both red and black fruits as well as loads of flowers, spice, leafy herbs, and incense. Medium-bodied, balanced, and elegant on the palate, it has polished tannins, terrific balance, sweet oak, and outstanding length. This exceedingly elegant, seamless beauty lacks the density and concentration of the top wines in the vintage but is nevertheless a gorgeous, classic Pomerol that will evolve for two decades. Best After 2025.

  • 94Decanter
Careful and seductive oaking, this develops and builds in power and finesse over the palate, and is a seriously enjoyable Pomerol, just packed full of appellation typicity. A yield of 35hl/ha, vinified in new oak barrels, and will stay in barrel for 18 months.

Good morning. I have been to Juneau twice and enjoyed the trip to the top of Mt Robert’s. We also went on a whale watch tour that was great. I like the recipes, thanks to Tina @0106.

I will celebrate doodle day as my grand dog is a lovely example of one. My smaller pooch, Fred is a cockapoo and I see many similarities in behavior.

The rheumatologist remarked yesterday that I appear to be under a lot of stress. She felt the problem was more muscular than structural so now my job is to correct poor postures and utilize heat, ice and pain patches with lidocaine. I found it difficult to drive due to the pain and spasm but I am glad I got her opinion. The main problem here is that I can’t lift Tana and have to text for assistance. I will continue to do this because I think  I made myself worse  by trying to manage on my own. At least they are close by!

@RMLincoln, I was so sorry to read of the complications with Richard’s newly operated eye. It had to be especially difficult to be attending the memorial service at the same time.

@kazu, Jacqui, Sending hugs and everything good your way today.

@marshhawk, Annie, I am also thinking if you and Chuck today and everyday.

Have a great day everyone.

Good morning everyone!   Thanks for the Daily and maps, Sandi, Roy and Rich!    Thanks for apprising us with the meanings of today's days Graham.   Not an inspiring quote.   I will pass on the pesto meal but would love the bordeaux wine and a Cuba Libre with dark rum like Pusser's.  I have been to Juneau once on my first HA cruise.

Thanks for the cares and celebrations reports Vanessa,  I hope you feel better each day.  Prayers for your DHs @marshhawk, @ger_77 and @RMLincoln.   @smitty34877prayers for you with all you go through each day and of course for Tana.    Prayers for everyone needing them and those in war zones, Ukraine, the hostages and the innocents in Gaza.

We are heading out soon to go to our local tribe's E-Waste recycling event.  It will allow us to get rid of a stack of old laptops and my late DHs desktop computer.   Then we will have a late lunch to celebrate Couples Appreciation Day.   I have attached a mini video of the baby swans which all left the nest yesterday.  So cute and the light was perfect.  Two cream and three gray.  They all end up white in the end.   Nancy

Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit

Good Morning from a sunny day at the beach

We went to Alaska in 2001 on our first HAL cruise, the Statendam. Had been on other lines previously but first on HAL. Returned in 2014. Enjoyed Juneau although we had an incident on the Tram. Will never go on another because it scared me so much. I still have heart palpitations thinking of it. The best whale watch I ever did was in Juneau.

@kazu   Warm thoughts being sent to you today. Glad to read that you enjoying your cruise

@RMLincoln   Hope DH`s eye is doing better.

Another busy day for me. Yesterday was nuts, topping it off with the AC tech saying we need a new unit! We asked for a 2nd opinion with the same result.

This AM i have a Doctors appointment.and then the library board meeting this afternoon, Budget! Cant wait LOL.

Stay safe and enjoy today

We, my sis and I,  visited Juneau in September 2016 and we were on the Noordam.  I went with friends who introduced me to HA.  We did a HA tour to the Fish Hatchery, Glacial Gardens and to the Mendenhall Glacier.

Rabbit, Rabbit, White Rabbit!

Wishing everyone on the Daily a happy May Day!

Alaska was my late DH's happy place -- we did many cruises there with HAL. Looking forward to the Summer Solstice cruise on the Westie in 2025!

The pesto chicken would be OK but I couldn't make it at home. I remember a bizarre train journey, Indianapolis to Washington, D.C., in the 1970s, that ran five hours late. My car had a group of Marines--looking too young to drink--returning to Camp Lejeune who guzzled so much rum and Coke that the bar ran out of rum. For the wine, Ravines Wine Cellers Le Petit Caporal 2020 even though it's $34.95.

I spent several days in Juneau in 2021 during a non-cruise (Alaska Marine Highway System). It rained almost all the time so I have no pictures. The best part was an all-day trip to Tracy Arm Fjord with Adventure Bound that wouldn't fit into most port calls.

Good morning Daily-ites..

Prayers lifted for all of our Daily friends and family. Thinking of Jacqui @kazu I was able to remove 2 friends from my prayer book this week and that calls for a celebration.

We will be leaving Seattle in Sept and going up towards Alaska but we will be sailing thru Sitka, Skagway, and Dutch Harbor on the way to Japan. We have been to Juneau at least 6 times. We used to cruise with NCL. Then one summer we saw a 2 week special on HAL for Alaska, and the rest is history!

Yesterday was Farmer's market here in Sun City. I was able to get a nice piece of halibut I'll make tonight with a light white wine sauce.

Wishing everyone a blessed day. Thank you to our loyal contributor's.

Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit. Also ribbet, ribbet, white frog, just in case.

Today I need to deal with grocery shopping, laundry, and yard work. It's also time to plant lettuce seeds and peas. In theory it would have been better to plant them earlier, but I've found that when I do, they don't germinate until now, if at all.

For those with doodler dogs:

🐰  RABBIT  🐰  RABBIT  🐇  WHITE RABBIT!

Good morning from another cloudy day in central Texas.  It is 69F with a 8mph wind and 96% humidity.  The dew point is 67F.  Our high will be 80F with the chances of rain starting about 3pm, but the best chance of rain starts a little later, and is predicted to last through early morning tomorrow.  There will be chances of rain off and on through Monday morning.

Law Day, Couples Appreciation Day and Loyalty Day are all good days to honor.  It is also Lei Day in Hawaii.

I'm not sure about how I feel about the John Green quote.

We'll pass on the meal, but will be having the rest of the mushroom soup chicken from the other night.  It's a childhood favorite of mine, and DH also likes it.  I'll take a Cuba Libre made with Captain Morgan's rum.  I've always heard, its a Cuba Libre if it has lime in it, otherwise, it's just rum and coke.  I would love to try the wine, but some else will need to buy it for me to taste.

I've lost count on how many times we've been to Juneau, and we've been there in all kinds of weather.  Our first time in Juneau was on the old Sky Princess in 1993.  At least, I think that was the year.

Commemorating the 1701 Acts of Union is an important day in UK history

@grapau27  Thanks for the explanations today, Graham.  Nice lunch, too.

@MISTER 67  I hope the new crown arrives before your cruise.  Our dentist has a 3D printer that makes the crown, so it's one and done.

@dfish  Safe travels home, Debbie.

@cunnorl  Charlene, sorry about needing a new a/c.  I hope the doctor appointment goes well, and that the board meeting goes very smoothly.

@kazu  Jacqui, thinking of you today.

@ottahand7  Nancy, thanks for the swan video and the great pictures.

@marshhawk  Annie, I'll be thinking about you and Chuck @catmando  today, and I hope the doctor will have some good answers for you.

We have been to Juneau on at least 12 cruises, plus a stop on the Alaska Marine Highway when we didn't get off the ferry.

To get out of the Texas summer, we started doing b2b2b2b cruises.  Also, we found that doing 2 or more b2bs, we have a better chance for good weather (meaning clouds, no rain) at least once in each port.  In 2018, Alaska was having a heatwave in the southeastern part of the state, so we had tremendous weather all but the last time in Juneau.

Our first cruise there, we took a helicopter flight to Taku glacier. We landed on the glacier and when we took off, the pilot flew through some wide crevasses.  Unfortunately, those pictures are in a photo album.  For the most part, I tried to pick pictures a little off the beaten path.

The first two are from Douglas Island, taken the day we rented a car.  Volendam was with the Zaandam that day.

DSC03802.thumb.JPG.c36682e4a2a0b8a1c65817dcac715b2e.JPG

We saw this statue as we came across the bridge back into Juneau.

DSC03806.thumb.JPG.2f72843d2e2307d6fb0c47e2b7e15e4c.JPG

In 2015, we were on Statendam for her final call in Juneau before heading to Singapore and then to Australia.

DSC03995.thumb.JPG.3177e64667eec661c98533f065e7a99b.JPG

The day we rented a car in Juneau in 2015, we saw this bear up close and personal at the boardwalk by the parking lot at the Mendenhall Glacier.  Fortunately, there was a strong fence between us and the bear.

DSC04009.thumb.JPG.9f6779c287739fc9225280a50cc66456.JPG

Finally, a classic picture of Juneau without the classic Juneau weather.

Good morning to all.

Happy Wednesday,

Thank you to Sandi @StLouisCruisers for having the Daily and Fleet Report ready so bright and early today.

Thank you to Roy @rafinmd for the Maps and to Vanessa @JazzyV for the lists.  I am so glad that you are sleeping well and seem to have conquered the pain in your leg.

Thank you to Tina @0106 for the meal recipe, Ann @cat shepard for the wine write-up and to Dixie @summer slope for the drink recipe.  And last, but not least, to Graham @grapau27 for the decryption of the days we celebrate.

Interesting quote.

I have been to Juneau, Alaska.  It was the summer of 2007.  It was the first HAL cruise we took, but not our first cruse.  That was on the Home Lines back in 1986 to Bermuda, when I swore I would never go on another cruise.  So much for swearing!

I will pass on the meal, since somehow Pesto does not agree with my tummy.

I like Cuba Libre and had many while I was a student in Ponce, Puerto Rico many moons ago.

The wine sounds yummy, but above my budget.

Jacqui @kazu Thnking of you today and sending virtual hugs.

Terry @smitty34877 You and your family are always in my prayers.

Annie @marshhawk Thinking of you and Chuck and hope you are both doing well.

Maureen @RMLincoln I am sorry for the latest setback with your DH and hope it is temporary.

Prayers for all on the Cares list.  Hope I didn’t miss anyone.

Cheers to those celebrating and cruising.

I am happy to report that all my communication equipment is up and running.  The Hargray technician paid us a visit yesterday after another day of outage on Monday.  I called and expressed my displeasure at their service yet again.,  This time they did something about it.

So far all is working well.

So we have a beautiful sunny day here in the Low Country of South Carolina.  So far we are holding our own.

Have a great day and as always,

God Bless,

Terri

Rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit.  Good morning, thanks for the Fleet Report and Daily!  Law Day, hmm, reminds me of my former career.  I will definitely celebrate couples day and be grateful we still are a couple.  Loyalty day is interesting - thanks for the explanation; I thought it was just a day to remind ourselves that loyalty is a worthy trait.

MAY.thumb.jpg.9f6f34fadb248fb9e6adf70644f075bb.jpg

Well we haven't heard anything officially, but there is hope for Maurice's procedure.  Because I hadn't received a response to Monday's phone call, I called again yesterday morning and spoke with the TAVR co-ordinator, reiterating that he wasn't getting better, just worse with more dizziness, etc.  She said she couldn't tell me anything officially, but she has him penciled in for the valve replacement on May 22nd, but it had to still go through the channels and we would be receiving a letter in the mail to verify it.  She did say though, that June 5th was an alternate in case something happened that May 22nd didn't come through.  At least there's something to look forward to for him - and thank you all for your wonderful thoughts and prayers as we play this seemingly endless waiting game.

@kazuI have you in my heart as you commemorate Jose's passing; you just know he's looking down on you with the same amount of love you gave him.

@RMLincolnprayers that your DH's eye pressures start to come to more normal levels.

@marshhawksending good vibes to you & @catmando as you make your way to the dermatologist today; I do hope they'll be able to do something to relieve Chuck's pain and his cheek as well.

Our friend Wayne received his pacemaker yesterday and called around 7PM to say he was home and feeling fine.  Although his A-fib is still a major issue, the pacemaker is there and he will go back in 30 days for the second procedure - the cardiac ablation so the pacemaker will take over full time.  This afternoon is the time when the guys in the band usually get together, but this time we're including the wives/significant others, so there will be maybe 8 or 10 of us enjoying coffee and chats instead of just the men.  Because the coffee shop is in a mall, I may suggest after a while that the ladies take off for some retail therapy and let the guys have some time alone - I think they might like that.

I'm not a huge fan of rum, so will pass on the drink, and would probably like the wine, but wow $$$... I'd substitute @kochleffel's alternate.  We both love basil pesto, so I think today's menu suggestion would be one we would enjoy.  We've got some leftover pulled pork from the other day that will be rolled in tortillas and served with coleslaw at the kitchen table tonight.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who is in need, in pain, in grief, and in turmoil.  Cheers to all with celebrations today.

Smooth Sailing!  ☺️☺️☺️

Gerry
