Celebrity Ascent - June 2024 - Greece, Turkey & Italy - 1 - Rome After our short 1 1/2 hour flight to Rome we took a taxi into town. There’s a € 50 flat rate for a ride into the city center. As usual, we like to stay around Torre Argentina in Rome. We think it’s the best location for exploring as it‘s basically right in the middle of everything you want to see. This time we chose the Argentina Relais as our base. The entrance is just a small door on the square. The gate to a very inviting place with a view of the ruins. Our first go to was Rosciola just around the corner. There is always room for a small Pizza snack. We passed the time to dinner with a drink at Campo dei Fiori and then walked across the bridge to Trastevere. When we walked past the church on the main square, there was a wedding ceremony taking place. IMG_0132.mov The picturesque alleys of the area are lined with countless little restaurants, one more inviting than the other. Since we discovered the La Scala Trastevere restaurant 12 years ago, we have visited it whenever we are in Rome. Today was no exception. However, tbh unfortunately it has seen better times. After dinner we walked over to the Pantheon and the small distance to Piazza Navona. Unfortunately Bernini’s beautiful Fontana di Fiumi was fenced in and is undergoing renovations. On the way back to the hotel we incidentally walked past a small place a friend had just told us about on FB an hour before. A cafe for 100 different kinds of Tiramisu. A good way to end the day. Rare chemmo Posted June 17 #11 Share Posted June 17 You have reminded me of the joys of visiting a big city full of history and remembering to look down the small streets and alleyways. Also of the importance of enjoying the present (nice food, drink and ambiance) as well as reflecting on the history of the city… Far too easy in the Mediterranean to gallop around bucket list sights and forget to simply soak its culture and beauty.… Always love your reviews, I will be looking at your posts with my daily morning coffee…

Rare mac_tlc Posted June 17 #16 Share Posted June 17 Following along!! Reminds me of our only trip to Rome. We stayed in Trastevere and my kids still talk about the wonder of walking through the narrow streets and happening upon a wonderful piazza, such as Piazza de Santa Maria. Such a great place. Looking forward to your journey on Ascent. mac_tlc

Rare Miaminice Posted June 17 Author #24 Share Posted June 17 Celebrity Ascent - June 2024 - Greece, Turkey & Italy - 2 - Rome Originally we had planned to walk through the eternal city with friends who unfortunately had to cancel the cruise last minute. Still, we followed our plan nd started our day with a breakfast on Campo dei Fiori square.
Rare Miaminice Posted June 17 Author #25 Share Posted June 17 Talking the charming backstreets, we walked over to the impressive fortress of Castell Sant Angelo and on to St. Peter‘s. Since the line for the basilica wrapped once around the whole square, we refrained from visiting the interior of the church this time.
