Discuss Implementation of Smoking Policy

@Colo Cruiser Since you mentioned it;  How is the Island?  Looking at a cruise for the summer.  Smoking areas OK?  (I believe this is one of the "small" ships, no?)

Smoking areas are pretty much the same as the Coral and all other Grand Class ships (Ruby/Emerald/Crown/Caribbean/Star/Golden/Grand etc)

Outside area on the Promenade deck 7 near the rear doors.

Churchills (one of the nicest) except for cigarette smoke.

A couple of areas on the upper decks.

Don't care for the Island since the Major structural changes but thats for another thread not here.

Anyone completed a cruise on a Royal class ship in the last year or so? How was the cigarette smoke smell in public areas? Does the smoke smell spill out of the casino very much?

 

My wife and I are sensitive to cigarette smoke and want to avoid it at almost all cost. We would like to do an Alaska cruise this summer and I have pretty much eliminated the Coral Princess because of the casino location in relation to the International Cafe. I am now having second thoughts regarding the Royal Princess because of the open casino layout. I would very much like to hear from those with experience on the Royal class ships. Thank you

Only location to smoke cigars is Churchills. No outside locations for cigars and pipes on this Princess ship nor on any other Princess ship.

Far more smoke bleedover on the Royal than there is on the Coral.

We have sailed the Coral many times sailed the Royal many times........smoke in the IC on the Coral is a non issue. IMO

Smelled smoke in that forward part of the atrium on the Royal as it drifts upwards.

Thank you very much. This is the sort of info that can be so valuable in helping me make a decision. I will definitely reconsider the Coral now.

Granted the Coral IC pales in comparison (size wise) to other ships but at least it has one.  😉

I just want to say something on this topic.  "Back in the day"  the topic came up because Princess was terminating the option of smoking in staterooms, and on balconies.  My feeling was that this topic came up for smokers to "complain" but also, to find where they Can smoke on the ships.  Now, it seems most who post here are just here to Hate the smokers.  I don't believe that was the original intent of this thread.

You are 100% correct.

This thread was started in 2012 for discussion on the then implementation of the Princess smoking policy.

Now it is still used to discuss and advise others on where the smoking areas are on a particular ship.

It is not a "bashing" session. 

Hence the removal of non conforming posts.

Ms. Tom. Personally when the questions are posted I try to provide accurate locations of where and what smoking is allowed on the ship. I may add, as a non-smoker myself, that I have not found smoke levels to be very intrusive.

Skynight, thank you!  I appreciate that!  We've been on several Princess ships, but when we plan one we haven't been on before, we look here to find the "place to go" and Always follow the rules of the ship! 🙂

The most "bashing" I see is by those who smoke cigars or pipes and I think they have a valid point. They are limited to Churchill's and resent being stuck in a cloud of cigarette smoke. Cigarette smokers have other options and, while I (an ex-smoker of unfiltered Camels) despise all smoke, those who smoke cigars and pipes should have a place where they don't have to put up with clouds of cigarette smoke. Even as one who dislikes smoking I can understand that the smell and "ambiance" of cigar and pipe smoking is vastly different than that of cigarette smoking. I guess "bashing" isn't the right word at all as these folks merely want to be able to enjoy their own particular inductance without having the experience messed up by those who can go elsewhere. It's somewhat akin to visiting a music venue (jazz club, country bar, etc.) and having a competing type of music playing at the same time as you are trying to experience the music you came to that venue to enjoy.

On our Alaska cruise last May, there were only the Speak Easy (cigar room), the smoking area of the casino or outdoor areas to smoke.  Given it was cold, often very windy and sometimes wet, we needed an indoor place to smoke and not wishing to gamble nor expose the non-smokers in the casino to our smoke, we had nowhere else to go but the cigar lounge if it was inclement.

 

Perhaps there needs to be an indoor sheltered area for cigarette smokers so that the cigar and pipe smokers can enjoy their own place without us.

I’m also happy there’s a place were smokers can go. So non-smokers and the ones that do smoke can be happy.

  We happily quit 1.5 years ago, so finding place to smoke was not really important for us on our Crown New Year cruise which ended a week ago. We also never try to avoid smoking places at all costs 🙂 on cruises. I do not think we will die from inhaling it once or twice.

 

  Anyway on Crown we saw only one place which was to the left side of Tradewinds bar. It had a number of the tables and I don't think it was too smoky at any time. So I suppose for smokers it was comfortable and not affected non-smokers experience. 

We attended Casino on several occasions an it wasn't smokey too.

Just got off the Star Princess and have some information that might be useful regarding smoking on that ship.  I am mobility challenged with an arthritic knee and walking long distances is a problem..  I was on this ship two years ago and there was a nice smoking area on Deck 14 outside near the bar.   I chose an aft cabin near the elevator because it is an easy reach to that smoking area, the Lido and the lounges  on Deck 7 plus that smoking area.  The only long walks I would need would be to the dining rooms.  I get on the ship, head for Deck 14.  It is now not a smoking area.  Go down to Deck 7 where there is an outside corner on the deck with no chairs and a wall mounted ashtray.  Since it is on the Promenade deck you get walkers going by (it is a very narrow area so they really have no choice to get away from it) with the typical results of fanning  faces, holding their noses, smart remarks, and dirty looks.  That was closed due to embarkation.  Next up was a very nice area on Deck 15 but far forward.  Ooops, that was closed too.  The only other choice was the sport's bar.  The joke among us is that you don't need to take your smoking items, just step in there and inhale  and is the only place where cigars and pipes are allowed (lol).  It is, also, far forward.  There were times during the cruise that the sport's bar was the only place to smoke on the ship as they would close the other areas down due to high wind, crew drills, and port necessities.  On the positive side, a lot of the crew members would huddle by the Deck 7 place for some nice conversation with them.  It cut down on my smoking because I would have to want a smoke mighty bad to hike to the other areas so it cut back on that which was good.

Tucker, I read somewhere that here is a small area inside Skywalkers night club that you can smoke at in the evening. Did you hear about that?

If there was, I was not aware of it.  Skywalkers doesn't open until 10:00 p.m. to the "public" and I never went up there that late.  It was open  for Platinum+ members from 4:30-6:30 which is the only time I went.  I did ask some crew members where one could smoke and they did not indicate there was a place up there only those places I mentioned before..  I wouldn't be surprised, though, if there was.

A while back on Crown there was a tiny area in the back of Skywalkers where smoking was allowed.

I don't know about now.

Here is a quote from the Emerald's Princess Patter. I think all this class of ship follow the same guidelines.

"Smoking is only permitted in designated sections of the Casino and Nightclub." The nightclub reference is Skywalker's. I have seen smokers there.

On Cruises on Sun & Star many years ago, there was a smoking area pool side undercover near the bar.

On recent cruise on Majestic areas were only on deck 7 and 17. Deck 7 was closed due to weather, and deck 17 was open to the elements. And the areas were not as social as by the pool.

Is this now the areas on all Princess ships?

We are looking at Sky Princess Baltic Cruise.

We are looking at Sky Princess Baltic Cruise.

The Sky has a large covered area with nice chairs (red cushion ones) outside deck 17 aft.

It has an outside area Promenade deck 7 Starboard side aft
