Smoking policy

We bolted from HAL to our first Celebrity cruise in December - 15 days to Hawaii. Celebrity has a pretty stringent smoking policy and we were so impressed with the "clean" smelling ship, in all areas. No smoking in the casino, and it was pretty full whenever it was open. So nice not to have to run thru it to get to the other end of the ship. No smoking in cabins, or on the verandas. Only 3 areas that we saw - one end of the starboard side of the Lido deck, and a couple of other outside designated places. Wish HAL would adopt some of these ideas, since the vast majority of people are non-smokers now.

I had exactly the opposite impression. First of all, Celebrity has so concentrated the smoking areas that even the outdoor ones are really bad. On the Solstice I found going forward from the solarium to the forward stairs far worse than anything I've found on HAL.

On the Summit, it's one of the few times I've sailed with a balcony and I'm glad I did. The ONLY public viewing area I found on the port side was at the back of the lido, and the stench there was so bad I would have forgone sailaways if I didn't have my own private place.

Where have you been? You've got your wish. HAL has adopted some of those ideas - No smoking in cabins, 3 outside areas where you can smoke. Problem is you want it all. Stay on Celebrity if you want it all.

Or you could do a land vacation. Not great to be told where to spend you vacation dollars, is it?

Oh good:rolleyes: another smoking thread:rolleyes:

Just when things were getting civil on the boards.

Smokers moan, non smokers moan. HAL is trying to make everyone happy.

My Celebrity cruise was the worst I have been on (I know, no cruise is bad), so you can take Celebrity and I will take HAL.

smooth seas as I hope this thread doesn't ignite ;)

Didn't say we would keep going on Celebrity - that was just one thing we did like about it. Wish responders wouldn't keep suggesting that we do that. We definitely prefer HAL for other reasons. Civility is the key!!!

To the OP just talk your government into banning cigarettes alltogether !!

Then we hopefully would have no more smoking threads!!!!

I wish that the Aussie government would ban cigarettes but they won't as they are too addicted to the revenue !!!

I think I will start a thread asking HAL to ban drinking on all their ships :)

Ciao,

Cristiano

I emailed HAL Customer Service on January 25th re: this very subject. I asked why, when they took a step in the right direction by banning smoking in cabins and most inside spaces, that they won't take it a step further and ban smoking on verandahs. I pointed out that under the Carnival umbrella alone, Princess has already adopted that policy and that both Cunard and P&O will be implementing it starting next month! Further, competitors such as Celebrity, Disney, and Royal Caribbean have also adopted a non-smoking policy on verandahs. I reminded them that it is a fire danger, a health issue, and that most hotels in this day and age are totally smoke-free as are most public places.

I have of course heard nothing back except the auto-response which says it could take up to a couple of weeks while they research it. Not holding my breath.

Don't flame, please. Just my personal plea to HAL on behalf of a lot of non-smokers in the cruise world.

I've also contacted them on smoking. The quoted me their policy. Yeah, that's helpful...not. Hopefully it will change sooner than later.

HAL is now the only smoker friendly cruise line out of all the major cruise lines so it is understandable that they would want things to stay the way they are. Smokers money is as good as anyone else's and if it eventually gets to the stage that everyone on HAL smokes it will be even better, no complaints from non smokers plus no need to deep clean cabins to remove the smell. Celebrity here I come.

They know everything above. HAL is most concerned about their bottom line.

I'd guarantee they have tracked spending of the smokers (smokers need to request an ash tray for their balcony). Obviously their profits are higher allowing smoking on the balconies just as the casinos in Nevada allow smoking (as does NCL). No, I'm not a smoker- I agree with kazu 200% on this one.

A handful of people bumping a thread to the top constantly will probably not change the policy. Smokers not spending money will definitely change it.

I know, just don't read the thread- no need to tell me that. This is not a flame!!

BTW- sideboard in the NL on the Westerdam is still bare!! :-)

Since we are all putting our wishes out there I wish HAL would have an inside bar with entertainment where we could have a drink and a smoke.:D

As a non-smoker..... I actually second that emotion! There should be a way to provide such a space without impacting on the rest of the ship.

I forgot all about hysterical future cruisers calling for a deep cleaning, not knowing if there had been a smoker in their cabin on the last 19 sailings.

There's been no mention of it.

It's been wonderful

Well, I cannot believe it! The (non smoking) casino onboard your Celebrity cruise was "pretty full whenever it was open"! And I thought that smoking & gambling went hand in hand! So, if X can do, why not HAL?

So long as the (smoking) inside bar with entertainment were enclosed.(like was done with the (formally) smoke filled casinos onboard Celebrity! Too bad that HAL never thought during their design stage to enclose their casinos to prevent smoking drifting all around them, especially around.inside the nearby shops!

Me too! As a reformed smoker I don't like smelling it in the casino and would not want to smell it on my veranda if I had one. I've been smoke free for almost 2 years now after smoking for 54 years. I know a HAL cruiser who is a chain smoker and would hate to have a veranda cabin near that person. Rain, sun, hot, cold, that person is out there puffing away a good part of the day.
