Kidney Stones and cruising

Im currently on day 5 of trying to pass a kidney stone. It really never occurred to me until now that it would really stink if this was happening on a cruise ship.

I have been trying every home remedy to ease this process and my wife is beginning to hint that it may be time to cancel our cruise doing up in 80 some odd days :( .

Anyone else deal with kidney stones or had to deal with kidney stones while on a cruise?

80 days out is a way off, so I would say it is too soon to cancel, however, I do suggest that you seek professional help with this (like now!), get advice from a doctor or two before you sail. I have not heard of any home remedies for this problem.

Please just seek medical help first, and get some advice from them. Wish you well with this, I know that it can be very painful.

Here's the potential problem as I see it.

You're 80+ days out. If you cancel now, you receive all monies back.

Insurance requires you to mitigate any losses.

If you were to wait a while and (let's say) you decide to cancel at 50% refund, then file for any losses,,, the insurance company can and will deny your claim since you could have cancelled earlier with this being a known medical issue.

Good luck and hope all turns out well

Go to your doctor! Get this taken care of now. He'll probably prescribe a few doses of Flomax (also used in prostate cases) and send you on your way. My friend. just this past spring had 23 stones removed/broken up and was in pain for the better part of the preceding year. Please see someone soon!

I agree that its way to soon to cancel, I think my wife is just concerned.

I did go to the ER on the first day and they sent me home with pain pills and a urology doctor recommendation if it didn't pass in 4-5 days.

The home remedies are just some stuff I read on the internet that they claim eases the process.... so far they don't work:D

I just couldn't imagine being stuck at sea with this kind of pain. If you have, I give you all the respect in the world!

Kidney stones are among the worst kind of pain. There is no way you're going to make it suffering for 80 more days. You'll either give in and make it to the hospital or die of sheer pain and exhaustion.

Go to the Dr and they should be able to have it cleared long before then. And as soon as it's gone, you will feel so much better.

I wouldn't cancel - I would get it taken care of ASAP. Chances are slim you will have another one that close together. While it could happen, I would be willing to bet you'll be OK for the cruise.

Go to the Urology Dr.

The only time I had a kidney stone was while I was working on a cruise ship. Got myself dehydrated, and down one started. Fortunately, the medical center could give me IV, and some pain pills, and within a couple of days I passed it. I could not imagine not being able to pass one for 80 days, and I think you would be risking serious health damage if you let it go that long. I assume you've seen a doctor to determine that the pain is in fact a stone, so he should have given some directions of what to do if the stone doesn't pass in a couple of days. Go back and see him/her again. It is possible that the stone is too large to pass, and you will need ultrasound to break it up.

I'm in day 3 of mine. I went to the urologist Friday and told him I was going on a cruise in 3 weeks. He has scheduled a procedure where they go up there ( you get the idea of how they get "up there") and break it up with a laser. He said I would be fine for the cruise.

I had one in March. It took 24 days to pass and a CT Scan says there are plenty more backed up in my kidneys waiting to come out. I've been told by a few to down lots of beer because it's makes you urinate a lot and that will help move the little sucker along. Next stone I will give it a try. Over the whole 24 days the first 4 were the worst. I'd ask your urologist before traveling.

I have had kidney stones about 3 times and had the kidney stone procedure once. For info, you may think you will know when you pass a stone but that is not always true. So don't count on that. The procedure is bearable but a few days later, they remove the stent and well ........................ Hurts like keck for a short time. Don't rely on home remedies and run to your specialist while you still have time.

One more thing. If you have a kidney stone, the doctor told me there is a good chance you will get them again. On that happy note, I will continue planning for my cruise and hoping I won't have the same problem.

Have dealt with kidney stones for over 20 years. Why have you not seen a doctor? The problem could be done and totally resolved in less than a week, if you see the doctor.

I have had literally 100 or more kidney stones. There is no home cure. There are some homeopathic preventative measures.

If you're talking about the drinking lemon water cure, I talked to my Urologist about the home remedies and he told me they are for a specific type of stone. Until you pass yours, you won't know which type of stone you have.

I have 2 resting comfortably in 1 of my kidneys. Unfortunately, they are too small to do anything but wait it until they either get larger or pass. I have pain pills in my medicine bag that I take with me for the last few years when I go on a cruise, just in case 1 starts to pass.

Drink at least 2 liters of water a day. I agree with the others. Go to an Urologist ASAP and get it taken care of. You should be fine for your cruise in 80 days.

You have to see a physician right away for this. There is no sense in suffering in pain or worrying on your cruise that this will flare up. See the doctor you were referred to ASAP. If you have a bad episode on the ship, the medical center will probably dose you with pain medication, but they will also probably remove you from the ship. You don't need that kind of hassle. Good luck and good health.

Go to your doctor NOW!!!! Tell them your worries. Doctors are real people too. They go on vacations too and they will understand. I would just ask them if theres anything you can do now, and on vacation if this would come up. Hopefully if you pass one now you won't keep getting them by your cruise. But only you know how often you get them.

I wouldn't cancel the cruise just yet though without talking to your doctor.

I've had several kidney stones, mine are uric acid stones caused by dehydration. I try to stay on top of them now that I know what causes them. My first one, my doctor encouraged me to drink beer, but I can't keep anything down when I have one. Doctors encourage you to pass them on your own with pain meds, unless they think you can't pass it without their help. I have not ever had one blasted or surgically removed but I have been sent to the ER several times so they could push fluids by IV.

There are several options to get you well before 80 days. See your doctor and discuss your options.

I hope you get well soon, kidney stones are not fun.

Had a couple of kidney stones a few years ago.

Went to the neurologist -- told me to drink plenty of water and cranberry juice. Gave me some pain pills.

Passed them in a couple of weeks.

This is why you should not seek medical advice on cruise critic. I hesitate before even suggesting you see either a urologist or a nephrologist.

If you cannot decide what specialist to see, ask your internist - but see a doctor ASAP.
