gvre Posted September 2, 2017 #1 Share Posted September 2, 2017 It seems lately( Last ship Dawn Princess) when we send out our laundry on the ships they come back scorched, buttons melted, and other stuff. Does anyone have any recent experience on the Pacific Princess? Thanks Debbie
Colo Cruiser Posted September 2, 2017 #2 Share Posted September 2, 2017 It seems lately( Last ship Dawn Princess) when we send out our laundry on the ships they come back scorched, buttons melted, and other stuff. Does anyone have any recent experience on the Pacific Princess? Thanks Debbie In our experience.....Yes! We stopped sending out expensive stuff. Other things only as a last resort. One of the issues is the high heat they use. We get small holes in garments. For the last few years we have rarely used the service. Now we just go to the self serve launderette. ccrain Posted September 2, 2017 #3 Share Posted September 2, 2017 All over the fleet, its the same issue. They are really rough on clothes - must the rocks they use to beat the clothes against. The elastic goes frizzy, tiny holes appear, the fabric gets thinner, threads unravel. Whites turn grey, greys turn greyer, etc. It looks like my laundry during college - one bag to rule them all...one cup of cheer...cold water...double rinse...done... After a longer cruise, we typically have to toss most of the underwear, socks, t-shirts and other everyday wear out. Still beats having to do laundry. However, a friend of ours puts in a bag and marks it delicate and has not had similar issues with her delicate unmentionables...

JF - retired RRT Posted September 2, 2017 #5 Share Posted September 2, 2017 We spent 34 days on the Pacific and had no issues at all. OTOH - Pescado Amarillo spent 2 winters(!) on the Pacific and reports some issues with rips, buttons, etc. Check out her blog (http://pescadoamarillo.blogspot.ca/) here. victory2020 Posted September 2, 2017 #6 Share Posted September 2, 2017 If you send whites out with darks they are washed together & your whites will come back gray. I've also had a lined silk dress come back from the cleaners with the silk shrunk, making the lining longer than the dress. They did manage to fix it somehow. I filed a claim last cruise with the hotel manager for a Brooks Brothers shirt they scorched and a Columbia shirt where they melted the buttons. After filing out the form I was visited by various members of the laundry department to inspect the clothes. They agreed to reimburse me the cost as ship board credit provided I give them the clothes to keep which I did.
JimAOk1945 Posted September 2, 2017 #8 Share Posted September 2, 2017 We have cruised on the Star, Caribbean, and Island Princess ships and never had any problems. We only send out every day things like underwear, jeans, T-shirts, socks.
floridalover5623 Posted September 2, 2017 #9 Share Posted September 2, 2017 I see you've learned the hard way, just as we did many years ago. :(NEVER trust them to wash good clothing and only use the "cleaning" service for older items. My underwear & socks get washed in the sink using their bathroom soap because if you have them wash it, they'll be shrunk for sure.
Rare oskidunker Posted September 2, 2017 #10 Share Posted September 2, 2017 Have sent out tuxedos, khaki pants , wool slacks many shirts socks etc. never a problem
Thrak Posted September 2, 2017 #11 Share Posted September 2, 2017 Wow. I guess I'll just bask in the joys of not being Elite! ;p We're pretty happy that there is self service laundry onboard. When we finally (someday!) become Elite at least we will be pre-warned.
floridalover5623 Posted September 2, 2017 #12 Share Posted September 2, 2017 The only thing we use "occasionally" is their "cleaning" service for items like jeans & an older Polo shirts. So far it's been fairly reliable but I feel reluctant using it for underwear and socks so I just do them myself. ;)

Rare PescadoAmarillo Posted September 2, 2017 #14 Share Posted September 2, 2017 Here are my visual aids to describe how tough the ship's laundry is on clothes. These were all from the Emerald Princess, and we found that ship to be the most egregious laundry destroyer (we have had far more than I've attached photos for). Still, I haven't found any ship's laundry that is kind to clothing. If we cruise for three months, I never plan to return home with any underwear nor most t-shirts. And I wash all our washable dinner clothes myself. However, I have not had bad luck with the Cleaning service, and do still send my slacks to be cleaned. This was the back of a two month old heavy weight t-shirt ($35 new). The holes stretched about 12" top to bottom. This is the only damaged item I've ever claimed, and I received 10 times the laundry price (I think) which was less than the cost of the shirt. The neckline of my husband's t-shirt. The small holes that are fairly common. More small holes. We've also had lost clothing (shorts and socks) and twice had waistband buttons destroyed. Use at your own risk. GweninTX Posted September 2, 2017 #15 Share Posted September 2, 2017 We are Pacific Princess for 36 days and I give their laundry 10 out of 10. Quick turnaround and no damage! Cannot say the same for Royal Princess! They were about a 7! Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Aus Traveller Posted September 2, 2017 #16 Share Posted September 2, 2017 The original question was "How hard is the ship's laundry on your clothes?" My answer is "Very hard". We only send out items that are fairly tough. No good clothes and no delicates.
zhuuliye Posted September 3, 2017 #17 Share Posted September 3, 2017 I wouldn't send in anything that i definitely would not want ruined. They are probably doing laundry with big heavy machines (since it's a big ship), just send in items u don't mind losing Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare geoherb Posted September 3, 2017 #18 Share Posted September 3, 2017 We've been fortunate so far not have any clothes damaged. We sent out $175 worth on our British isles cruise last month.
framer Posted September 3, 2017 #19 Share Posted September 3, 2017 Make sure if good that it goes as cleaning NOT laundry. My only issue has been jeans shrinking, I switched to putting them in a bag for cleaning and never had another issue. Never had damage in ~ $1000 worth of cleaning/laundry. The wife also does take photos of what being sent and matches up with the stuff coming back, she OCD. framer
Lucky TGO Posted September 3, 2017 #20 Share Posted September 3, 2017 I was on the Royal Princess in January and the same thing happened to my t-shirts. Little holes in them. See post #14. The girl at passengers service said she never seen this happen before. Who is she kidding . I was given SBC for my loss. Tony
ggprincess2004 Posted September 3, 2017 #21 Share Posted September 3, 2017 We only send out sturdy items. I use the passenger laundry for delicate and less sturdy items. The ship's laundry is very hard on clothes.

west coast cruiser Posted September 3, 2017 #25 Share Posted September 3, 2017 I don't send anything to be dry cleaned. I have had a couple of bad experiences. And I don't send out laundry very often. Same thing. WCC
