divaofdisney Posted December 6, 2017 #1 Share Posted December 6, 2017 Does anyone know if you can cash a personal check onboard and if so where?? I really don't want to pay a high fee to use an ATM on the ship if I don't have to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

neverbeenhere Posted December 6, 2017 #3 Share Posted December 6, 2017 No is the answer unless this has changed recently. They will cash your Benjamins. (Bring Z Cash)
casofilia Posted December 7, 2017 #4 Share Posted December 7, 2017 I very much doubt that they would cash a personal cheque.. What is the ATM fee? You could always take "cash" in the casino and pay their fee as if using it there. Play 1 pull on a machine and cash out what is left.
Desert Cruizers Posted December 7, 2017 #5 Share Posted December 7, 2017 Bring cash with you, we always brought a minimum of $500 ( end of cruise tips, porters, tour guides & small cash purchases in port, taxi ) I believe they still cash a Travelers check but we haven't brought any for a while now. I think it was something like a $6 fee when I used the ATM one time.
TwoCruisers Posted December 7, 2017 #9 Share Posted December 7, 2017 As “Desert Cruizers” said they will cash Travelers checks. I used to bring most of my money in traveler checks but for the past couple of years I haven’t been able to find any place that issues them. If you can find a place that issues travelers checks it is a good safe way to bring money on the cruise.

DRS/NC Posted December 7, 2017 #11 Share Posted December 7, 2017 I still get travelers' checks at AAA. Princess was still cashing them in Feb. on the Crown. I'm a senior woman traveling alone; I won't carry large amounts of cash. Travelers' checks for me!
easyboy Posted December 7, 2017 #12 Share Posted December 7, 2017 There are still many convenient locations to buy travelers check.
Steelers36 Posted December 7, 2017 #13 Share Posted December 7, 2017 If you don't want to carry cash to the ship, send yourself a gift of OBC or Casino Credits. You will also earn credit card points for the purchase from Princess. I send myself casino credits every cruise. You can deposit the excess funds in your on board account and withdraw at the PSD or Casino as needed. But you should be a player of sorts because the Casino will frown on just withdrawing cash and doing nothing. If you send OBC to the ship, your on board account will begin with a credit balance and you can obtain cash NP without going into debt if that is the plan. neverbeenhere Posted December 7, 2017 #16 Share Posted December 7, 2017 In some ways couldn't a Traveler's Cheque be considered an impersonal check? (n)

Why not use a US bank that rebates foreign ATM fees and then use port ATMs recognized by displaying the same logos as those on your ATM card. Those ATMs will have favorable exchange rates and you'll have local money to spend. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

satxdiver Posted December 7, 2017 #21 Share Posted December 7, 2017 Once on the ship you should put the cash and other valuables in the room safe and take out only the amount you will need onshore. It also helps to being small bills while the PSD will cash big bills (ie $50 etc) they sometimes have problems due to a shortage of cash. Last cruise I had a $50 bill (big mistake) and they had to dig for the change. Travelers checks are a relic of the past and most merchants will not accept them even in this country as they are easily counterfeited.

Thrak Posted December 7, 2017 #23 Share Posted December 7, 2017 Our last cruise was 28 days and, while I took more cash than my wife thought would be needed, we encountered more expenses than expected. I used the ATM in the casino at the end of the cruise as I didn't have any more cash and wanted to tip a number of folks. If you do use the ATM just be sure to get as much cash as you will want in the first transaction so you only have one fee.
