Missed Antigua due to weather

Currently on Silhouette's 9-day cruise where we have had a third sea day after missing Antigua due to weather delays. According to the Captain, we encountered consistent 40+ knot winds and 17ft seas from Friday night to yesterday. Lots of rocking and rolling! Today is sunny and low 80s in Barbados.

Be grateful the captain has good sense of safety of passengers, crew and ship and enjoy the rest of your cruise. Sometimes those things happen. We've occasionally missed a port here or there. Last one we missed was Nova Scotia...70 mph winds and giant waves. I rolled out of bed that night sound asleep because the ship was rolling so much!

I bet there are more than a few who insist the entire point of taking that cruise was to go to Antigua and they now want a full refund because their cruise is ruined and they will need the money for therapy when the get home to get over the depression.

Yup, go to sea and chance facing bad wx. Sounds like you did OK and have a good attitude about it. Hope you enjoy the rest of the cruise.

We have missed many ports on cruises over the years, most recently Bermuda :loudcry: a bucket list stop for me.

But if the captain thinks it’s a bad idea due to weather, I trust his judgement totally!

What did they substitute for us?

Paris!

Okay, I totally got over my depression lol

It doesn’t always go that well, sometimes it’s just another sea day (but we love sea days)

In cruising you have to roll with it, weather is unpredictable and very little is guaranteed.

We cancelled out on this cruise due to so many sea days and possible post hurricane port decisions.

Sorry you missed Antigua. How was Barbados?..We were going to do the sunset catsmaran...it looked like a great excursion...We'll catch it next time.

Hope you have smooth sailing and sunny skies!

I would take the "rock n rollen, rather than stopping at Antigua.

If Antigua not a desirable port? Our itinerary was not as inclusive as the one OP is on, so I would have liked to go there as well as Grenada.

Now I won't feel so bad about not getting to go there when the hurricane changed our December cruise completely.

As many have said;" Safety First". I've missed many ports due to weather, strikes or unsafe conditions. Some will never understand why "they didn't go", but the Captain, supported by the Miami office evaluates all of the information. I saw one passenger yell at the Captain from the balcony of the theater because we missed stops in Israel. It costs any line many $$$ to miss a port, but they are willing to incur the expense to avoid a potentially dangerous situation.

It depends, we have been there every cruise for the past 10 years, apparently Princess has a "deal" with them . The "tour guides" at the end of the pier can be very, very aggressive. If you don't like that kind of thing, there is another way out of the pier area, which we take to avoid them. I wanted to take a look at that church that you can see from the ship, but was advised it was not a "favorable" walk. There is also a "straw" market by the pier that is so congested with vendors, IF you walk through, keep your purse in front of you with your hand over it or keep your hand in your money pocket. I have heard others who I have sailed with, a family wanted to go to a beach, one driver overloaded the van, and the beach was not good.

We just get off the ship to stretch our legs, hit the casino to get out of the heat, then go to the bar across from Diamonds International for a couple of cocktails, then back to the ship.

BUT....that is our experiences, check the Antigua threads here for other opinions.

We will be there again the beginning of March, we were just there this past November

It happens ... weather can cause an issue anywhere you vacation.

We took a cruise around New Zealand one autumn and three of the five ports got canceled. Two because of weather and one because of an earthquake. We still had a wonderful trip even though we skipped three ports.

Thanks. We've been on a number of Caribbean cruises with Celebrity, Holland America and NCL but have never been to Antigua. As you say it must be a Princess thing.

We like Antigua...

We have taken a nice beach excursion with X,...down the beach from Sandals resort, We shopped at the mall near the pier... and enjoyed the crafts at the little open market ( S Fuller pottery kiosk) , cigar store for dh and some nice clothing stores.

We were looking forward to an excursion to a diff beach this time around but having cancelled the cruise, waiting til next trip. We have also done a land based trip there years ago but never strayed far from our resort!

Different strokes for diff folks...but passenger safety comes first,

We've missed Antigua once, had a wonderful land excursion with Scenic Tours Antigua on another occasion, and are booked with Adventure Antigua for their on water Eli's Eco Tour in March. I certainly wouldn't consider this an undesirable port.

OK.

You missed a port due to weather. What is the purpose of this thread?

Complaint?

Reference?

Thanks for the update.🤔

Happy cruising🌊🚢🇺🇸🌅😛

How about just an FYI?

A few weeks ago there was a thread where one poster was adamant that the Caribbean was smooth as glass except during hurricane season. Inexperienced cruisers might share that opinion, and the OP's information helps to add a little bit of realism.

I agree, Antigua is very nice. We have been with Eli 5 times. I am betting you will have a blast on the Eco Tour. :)
