Monkland Posted June 23, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 23, 2019 Is it necessary to book a taxi ahead of time from Heathrow airport to our hotel in Southampton?
Sancho_proudfoot Posted June 23, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2019 (edited) Necessary? No, Heathrow is THE major airport hub in the SE of England, taxis are everywhere. Advisable? Hell, yeah Prebooked, you will get a lower price, have someone waiting in the arrivals hall with your name on a board, and NO waiting in line. fishywood Posted June 23, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2019 You are aware that is an over-60 mile journey, assuming a Southampton hotel in the city center near the port. I would consider pre-reserving a private car essential as (1) black cabs have the right to refuse fares to destinations further than 20 miles from Heathrow given they are not licensed to pick up a return fare from outside Greater London; and (2) "minicabs" [private hire vehicles that are dispatched from the taxi ranks to waiting customers] are not metered and and you will be hard pressed to negotiate a fare lower than the cost of a much more comfortable private car service. The host of the Britain ports board has created a sticky thread with links to numerous recommendations of others as to transport to Southampton: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2662148-transfer-southampton—london-incl-lhrlgw-train-car-other/
taglovestocruise Posted June 24, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 24, 2019 We have used Blackberry cars several times and will use them in the future. I remember it being about 110 pounds for the trip, that was for two of us and 3 pieces of luggage in a SUV. Pick up is just as you leave baggage claim, we got stuck in Immigration last trip and walked out of baggage claim about 30 minutes later then we thought, driver called our cell to tell us where he was standing and we told him we were still in line. He said no problem he would just wait, no extra charge and we had a pleasant trip. About 1 hour to Southampton from LHR.

We took the bus, nationalexpress.com. If you really want a taxi it's not necessary to book it ahead of time but I should do it.
Ashland Posted June 24, 2019 #6 Share Posted June 24, 2019 We've used Smith's For Airports for this routing......Blackberry when just going from LHR into London. Both great options.
bonsai3s Posted June 24, 2019 #7 Share Posted June 24, 2019 Waiting for John Bull to provide an extremely detailed answer.......☺️ We use English Rose Collection from Heathrow to Southampton. Excellent driver (patiently waited for us...plane delayed and long lines through immigration/custotms), new car, and competitive prices. https://englishrosecollection.co.uk/

capriccio Posted June 30, 2019 #9 Share Posted June 30, 2019 Earlier this month we used Smith for Airports for 4 passengers and their luggage (3 checked bags, 4 carry-ons). They provided a new, comfortable MPV (Renault Espace crossover) with a great driver for 96 pounds (90 + 6 for Heathrow parking).
Corby114 Posted July 1, 2019 #10 Share Posted July 1, 2019 Blackberry Cars is the way to go. One hundred twenty pounds for the two hour trip from a Central London hotel to Southampton. Did this trip prior to my family’s fourteen night Royal Caribbean Independence Of The Seas Canary Islands sailing in June 2018. Clean vehicles, knowledgeable drivers, and reasonable rates. DarrenM Posted July 1, 2019 #11 Share Posted July 1, 2019 Very expensive taxi ride from Heathrow to Southampton. National express is cheap, and the train service is around £50 per person.
