When we were on the Breakaway in Sept the ship has their own K9 unit that does stay on board

Wasn't the Breakaway doing a bunch of Mexican ports at the time? If so that k9 unit is probably there to go after cocaine smuggling.

People might not drink to get drunk, but they don't pay $10/drink for the taste.

Not heard of a wine spittoon, if that's not for the taste, I don't know what is.

Colt 45 & 2 Zig Zags...Baby that's all we need....

Before anyone panics, more lyrics...

Y'all chill.

But I agree, not worth the risk at all to take the Mary Jane on the ship.

I really don't think the problem is nearly as widespread as people think.

Look at the Escape, 5k pax and crew. Stops in Bermuda every week. Bermuda AIN'T SCREWING AROUND with this stuff, and they sweep the ship with dogs every single time. Even with that you see one, maybe two arrests every few months out of at that point thousands and thousands and thousands of passengers. If so many people were cruising with weed, Bermuda authorities would be hauling pax off the ship left and right.

Just came from Bermuda.  You're right.  They aren't messing around.  Saw a couple of passengers on two different days arrested as they came off the ship.

Saw something similar on a Bahamas cruise earlier this year.

Agree that it's not nearly as widespread as some are making it out to be.  Usually, if someone smelled weed, you could overhear those within "sniff" distance report it to one of the crew.  Saw someone on the Escape ingesting at 5 0'Clock Somewhere Bar.  Bartender had a security guy there pretty quick.  See 'ya later.

Personally, I don't care what you smoke, what you ingest, etc.  But, risking a foreign arrest, in a foreign jail?  To get high?  Not happening!

Since the thread pretty much got triple hijacked, I'll hijack some more.  Illinois just became one of the states that made recreational use legal effective Jan 1st.   I have about zero knowledge of the use or the different ingredients so my curiosity got me to doing some research.

I've never smoked anything and don't want to but then I found out they have chocolate stuff, gummy bear stuff, baked goods, etc.

Bottom line:   This 59 year-old is gonna have some fun.   LOLZ.

Aren't you a bit late to the party? Where were you when your buddies were all having fun in high school?

For my first Alaska cruise, we were boarding in Seattle and I had read somewhere weed is legal in Seattle and Alaska - and naive me WAS curious, so I asked on here "since it's legal in port, is it legal to bring in aboard?" never thinking it wouldn't be.  I got a similar discussion - but the post that made me really take notice was after a helpful one about bringing edibles aboard, someone posted "you are teaching someone to smuggle drugs internationally"!  I hadn't thought of it that way...after all, it would be "smuggling" it from one LEGAL port to another....but that's the reality of it.  Don't have to like it, or agree with it, but that's reality.

OP, like the others say, if you HAVE to have that daily dose of weed, cruising may not be for you.  But..why not talk to your dr. and ask about other options for your cruise, something that can be prescribed that won't put you at legal risk?  it's crazy, I know, dr. can prescribe oxycodone, morphine, oxycontin, etc, etc  and you won't get busted, but a little weed and you are at risk.

And you want extreme hardcore - I was in Malaysia a year or so ago and was told that having weed is DEATH SENTENCE!  I don't get it!

same with us. We have seen a few. Since the UBP went into affect, probably none. I don't keep track or check everyone for how much they have had to drink. I have seen people do a lot of things, usually rude things, but not seen them "in your face drunk"

There were several "in your face drunk" people on our Jade TA this spring.  There was a story of somebody walking down the hall naked, and another one about a couple that was so drunk they got escorted back to their room by security and had to stay there a while...and hubby and I were at one of the bars midday and some guy who was really drunk came up to him and talked his ear off - and yes, he was DRUNK, not just garrulous.  And rumor about the couple was that halfway thru the cruise they'd run up >$1k booze bill - dunno why they didn't have the common sense to either buy the booze pkg or use it for their perks.

Just my personal experience.

I’m a medical marijuana patient.  I smoke just 3 hits before going to bed.  Since there is no smoking in the cabins, I’m wondering how others have dealt with this problem.  I hate the edibles they take way to long to work and do not give me the pain relief I get from smoking.

Triple the load on your brownies and bring snacks.

On the Breakaway this past May... dog was at every port (St. Thomas, Tortola, San Juan) and when we got to GSC the dogs were sitting at the gangway getting on the ferry and coming back on the ship. Where the heck would you get something on a private island? Or I guess the better question is why? Do you think the island is not covered in cameras....

How bad is it that every time I see the acronym GSC I think of Girl Scout Cookies?

FYI, for the Negative Nellies, GSC is an absolutely fabulous cannabis strain.  I am growing some in my backyard as this very time lol.

I donated a labrador to a drug detection company and he sailed with RC for years doing his job. Met people at the gangway with his tail wagging but if he sat down you would be questioned.

As a daily smoker/edible user..I get the OP's question. I look at it this way..cruise ships are not US flagged and while in non-US ports do not have to follow US law. Meaning, that they can and will search your cabin WITHOUT your consent. Our last cruise we saw two different people go off in handcuffs for possession of weed. The cops that were taking one of the guys off had his bag in their hand. It was about an quarters worth. Small amount and not worth the risk.

Is there something you can use as a substitute for the week so you can enjoy yourself? I hope you find relief some how.

And if they were US flagged ships following US law the possession of marijuana would still be illegal. Marijuana is a Schedule I drug under federal law...the same  as heroin ! Technically everyone in possession of marijuana that may be legal under the laws their state of residence is still subject to prosecution under federal law. Fortunately Uncle Sam has wisely decided they have more important things to do, but cruise ships would still be knowingly breaking US law if marijuana was allowed on board. Further, probable cause for searching your cabin under US law  can easily be established by having dogs alerting to the possible presence marijuana in the cabin . Your consent to search is not required.

One time, I was on a Carnival Cruise where I shared a cabin with a co-worker. The final morning, we got a knock on are door and an agent with a K9 came in and ran to one of the beds. We both looked at each other like, did she bring drugs on board? The agent told us it was probably just a trace from a previous cruise. We were relieved. Didn't want to get searched. Neither of us had smoked at all during the cruise. I would never risk it, even with a prescription.

Maybe your doctor can get you a pain script plus Xanax or something to help you sleep.

And even in US ports, unless the infraction affects the "safety or well being" of the port, US laws are not applied to the ship.  Further, by signing the cruise ticket contract, you give NCL the right to search your cabin and baggage, with or without your consent, knowledge, or presence.

TSA defers to local police for non-international or any flight that does not have to go through Customs. So if the local police don't care, TSA won't hold you for being in possession. Customs and border protection are the Feds, at every port you embark at, still treat it like reeefer madness and will arrest you on felony charges.

The way to handle this for the OP is to use the week as a tolerance break to be safe. To be less dangerous than smoking weed, switch to vaping. Invest in a PAX ERA pen that looks exactly like a Juul, and buy extract cartridges in your favorite strain. You'll find almost no smell, and still have the ability to medicate. For just a little more smell and hassle, you can buy a dry flower vaporizer like a FlowerMate v5.0 Mini that will vape the bud to get the same mix of cannabinoids and terpenes you get smoking it, but without the dangerous (and stinkier) products of combustion. The FlowerMate resembles a portable USB battery when the mouthpiece is folded into it, and looks like a vape mod when in use.

If you still want to smoke flower, look into water curing the bud. It removes most terpenes, but retains the cannabinoids. You get a milder high reportedly, but it doesn't smell much at all.

Thank you this is most helpful!!
