Another dress code question...

Recommended Posts

I wouldn’t go to the County Fair in ripped jeans, but then I am not seventeen.   Have not seen them worn in Luminae on our crossings but there must definitely be a different age group and different type of passenger on the other cruises.  Guess everything is about comfort and dressing a little for dinner is not comfortable for some passengers.

Amen.  I don’t see why dinner can’t be a special time to have everyone put in something nice and treat it like a special event and not “chow down” time.

PS - I have a pair of jeans with holes.  They are called my painting pants or work in the yard pants (don’t get it, don’t want to)

My wife and I change before dinner into something nice, and on formal nights, I wear a suit and my wife an evening dress, but neither of us look at what other people are wearing, or care. It's personal taste, and what the cruise line allows. If they allow shorts and tee shirts, or jeans with holes, so be it.

NC,

These types of dress code questions have been raging on CC for years. On the internet everyone has an opinion. When you actually get on the boat, and interact with real, in the flesh people, the only opinions that matters will be that of the crew who might ask you to put on something different for the MDR. Unless those cute Capri's have 2 inch holes over their entire surface you will be fine. 99% of you fellow cruiser's won't care a lick about what you are wearing. The 1% who disapprove will do so in silence, mumbling to themselves about the decline of Western civilization, and what's wrong with youth today, but they have been doing that since Eisenhower left office.   😉

You picked a  cruise line where most,  but not all,  do dress quite nicely at night and at special daytime events based on their own sense of style  (mainstream nice clothes not couture) ; unless going to the buffet for dinner.  You have posed inquiries about fitting in with the mainstream on board,  shoe styles and ripped jeans and a cute top....That would be okay for daytime although we usually do shorts, tops or swim suits with cover ups in the Carib...

I don’t recall posting about shoe styles. I plan to bring the same shoes I would on any cruise. They were good enough for Princess, they should be good enough for Celebrity. The only other concerns I recall having initially were that I had read Celebrity ships were filled with older people (retirement age) that go to bed early and  there wouldn’t be anything to do at night, such as live music, comedians, good shows, etc. We don’t gamble so the casinos are out. Those concerns were alleviated.

We are going to Bermuda, not the Caribbean.

Sorry you are disappointed in honest answers from experienced X cruisers based on recent observations but it is what it is.

Not disappointed in honest answers, but in attitudes from people that think people like me are lowering the standards. Again, Celebrity made a decision to remove ripped jeans from things that are banned. Perhaps they want to stay current with the times even though some of their long time guests aren’t pleased with that decision.  I’m sure you noticed that not everyone feels they would be out of place.

Besides, I only had them in mind as a backup plan or possibly for the last night since I plan to wear them on the way home since they are so comfortable. We have late seating and on most ships your luggage has to be in the hall before then. When that’s the case, we typically have to wear the same thing to dinner we wear home.

.Lately, things are young, fresh and trendy but not  boho sloppy looking. Why not pack a few nice sun dresses, sweaters, capris and one special outfit like  a LBD, with  blingy sandals for the first chic night. Your husb can do dark dockers and a nice collared shirt.  ( jacket not required)...Enjoy a special evening, toast yourselves, get great photos...you may surprise yourself !

Now you’re just being condescending. I know how to dress. You may be quite surprised to hear, but I have packed what would be considered appropriate attire for both chic nights. I think even you and Ma Bell would approve, even though your clothes may be more formal. We have always brought clothes for the formal, elegant, chic nights... whatever the cruise lines called them. And we have many beautiful photos for those nights. We will most likely do so while dressed up this trip as well because we will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary. Normally I do bring a few sundresses, but have opted for pants this trip since we are flying and I picture them to be a wrinkly mess by the time we unpack. I do have one that doesn’t tend to wrinkle much, but I believe I’ve outgrown it. I’m bringing navy capris and long black pants. I have tops to go with each color.  If something were to happen to one of those pants, then I would need the “sloppy” capris as my backup, unless I were to wear the pants I’m bringing for the second Chic Night. They are super long though which would mean another night in 2” heals and I much prefer my sandals.  I have neuropathy so they can cause me quite the discomfort. I figured two nights of dealing with it are more than enough.  Also, I’m taller than my husband so he prefers me to wear flatter shoes.

BtW,  vis a vis your recent post, where we live, teachers are highly respected  well paid professionals,  and even folks who work in trades like to dress up when of duty...Maybe a  cultural difference?

Where we live, teachers are not well paid (NC is among the lowest in the country). I do it because I love it, not for the money. With the exception of the two Chic nights everything else I’m brining for dinner I would wear to work as well. When I buy clothes I try to find items I could wear to work (with the exception of shorts and t-shirts), Church (gasp!  Most everyone in our church wears jeans, even jeans with holes!), or out to dinner. Our budget doesn’t allow otherwise. We do dress up on special occasions if we go to a nice restaurant. However, most people around here dress very casual most of the time.  My husband will be wearing a shirt and tie the first Chic Night, not sure if I can convince him to do it twice. I won’t be dressed up as much the second night anyway.  The first night I have a cocktail dress, the second just dress pants with a blingy top.

If you feel it’s polite to imply that normal people that don’t want to dress up on Celebrity are somehow lowering the standards...  If you feel so strongly about this, travel in a suite and you won’t be bothered by the working class that have to dine in the MDR.  I’m not sensitive to the fact that not everyone would wear them. I would be shocked if my mom did, although I might give her a high five!

I just wouldn't want want to be sent back to my room to change or to the back of the dining room instead of my assigned table.

Trust me, I won’t be worrying about what others are doing or wearing. The elitists seem to do enough of that for everyone.

Celebrity is trying to appeal to Millennials. I’m not saying they should give up on their money train, it’s just a fact.  I do hope to be able to retire and travel more at some point, but I am a long way from that now.

Believe it or not, some of my best friends are in their 60’s and 70’s. They just aren’t stuffy.

Amazing that you can read something and respond with so many non sequiturs.  You seem to have categorized everyone into imaginary groups, elitists, working class, stuffy, normal, Millennials etc. and then ascribing imaginary thoughts to them. It's definitely entertaining but not very realistic. There won't be any class warfare or confrontation going on.

Just relax and enjoy.

They don’t. Just one on the knee, with perfectly placed threading covering most of my flesh, and maybe one or two tiny ones elsewhere. They are quite cute IMO. Of course my dad hates them! 😂  My mom always says, “Oh Renny, that’s how they dress today!  I think she looks nice. “  My dad also hates it when my mom wears capris, or dresses that don’t go to her ankles. He’s old fashioned. I love him to death, but he dresses like the old man he is. My mom, on the other hand, always looks lovely.

I never care what others are wearing in a cruise, with a couple exceptions. It grosses me out to see women in thong bathing suits because it seems unsanitary. 😝 On elegant nights, I love to get a cocktail then sit and people watch. Not to judge, but to admire some of the beautiful dresses the women are wearing.

While I I agree with you for the most part, there are some that complain loudly. A few years ago we were in line at a gift shop on a cruise. A little boy was trying to purchase something and was being helped by the cashier. Apparently the man in front of us thought he was taking to long, and loudly grumbled, “He should be on a Disney Cruise!”  So rude!

Can't really say much more.. we all grow  out of some outfits size wise and age wise... but  always something nice can be found....for all ages sizes and wrinkle free styles.. easy to pack.

I loved  cruise Critic Jens EDGE review. A busy .young prof woman,  a mom...great sense of style, budget conscious..loved her outfits!

Another live rev with the "Honeymooners"  is  currently active.  She dresses  nice with her own style.  Her solo cruise review had some awesome outfits.

Sorry I tried to be of  help when  help was not really wanted... but  not at all sorry being honest and not being a rubber stamp...

Moving on!

Personally, I never commented on what I think anyone should wear or what I wear but for some reason you find it necessary to include my name in your comment. I'm not concerned with what anyone wears. It's their decision not mine. I thought the question was whether you would feel out of place. No one but you could possibly answer that question and you certainly have. Since you already knew the answer I wonder why you asked the question?

My only concern was if I would be allowed in. I don’t care what others think, but would be embarrassed if I was asked to leave. I also read on here where someone said if they don’t like your clothes they will ask you to leave (even though I would never knowingly wear anything that was prohibited.) or place you back in a corner of the dining room where no one would see you. I don’t recall which thread it was in or who said it. I didn’t realize asking a simple question would lead to all this. Lesson learned.

I simply dress up nicely to compliment my wufe who loves dressing up.

We don't care what others choose to wear and never really notice either.

Last night in a nearby restaurant ( no dress code btw) the manager complimented us on our smart attire. No need for him to say it but a drink on the house and  "hope to see you again" was well received by us.

This is what you asked in the  first post:

My question is about jeans in the MDR.  In this forum some of you have said jeans without holes.  Well jeans with holes just happen to be in style, and their website does not mention that.  I have a pair of denim Capri jeans with holes and a pretty design on the side.  They are cute and super comfortable!  Would I be out of place wearing them in the MDR on a non-chic night?

I believe you are misunderstanding my original question, as you yourself quoted above.  I wanted to know if I would be out of place.  Not anyone's opinion on if they personally found it appropriate or not.  Not if half the women in the dining room would wear them, not if anyone else would wear them.  In fact, given the demographic of Celebrity I doubt many would like them.  I don't care if they do or not.  I simply wanted to know if I would be out of place.  Here is what I was asking according to Merriam-Webster:

image.png.42d4fc78994186094e5b872296bad00b.pngimage.png.42d4fc78994186094e5b872296bad00b.png

In my humble opinion, if it's not against the rules then it should be deemed appropriate.  On other threads, I had seen multiple people mention jeans without holes were allowed.  You are correct in saying the question was asked and answered, albeit with some snarky, unnecessary comments.  I will feel comfortable wearing them now knowing that I won't be turned away.  I'm am officially done with this thread.

OP, sadly, every dress code thread eventually descends to the depths. The code is open to wide ranged interpretation. Everyone has opinions, but as long as your apparel fits within the guidelines you'll be fine. Don't worry about the judging you find on dress code threads like this where someone asks a simple question, and once answered there follows multiple pages of comments. Despite what you may have read here, the dress code police are mostly invisible once you're on board as long as you fit the loose guidelines. Have fun, calm seas and enjoy your cruise.

Not exactly dress code related, our son will be coming with us on our Norwegian Fjords cruise, he is aware of the dress code for evening meals and will dress appropriately ……. but at some stage during the day I'm sure he will wear shorts and tee shirts, which I'm getting a bit apprehensive about as he has a passion for tattoos and his arms and legs are covered with them.

I'm worried that he may get some unwarranted adverse comments about his tattoos.

Probably no more so than going out anywhere at home. A cruise ship is like a small city with lots of people and their opinions. No disrespect intended, but if he is old enough to have all those tattoos, he has certainly come across looks and comments from people in the past and can handle himself. Try not to worry. 😊

Tattoos are very common today. You’ll see plenty of people with them. No big deal unless people are stuck in 1950. If so, who cares what they think?

I don't know.......  I look at kids in ripped jeans and think what the heck?  How has the fashion industry made jeans that look like they have been mangled in a washer and bought at a thrift store a fashion trend?

However, I do reserve their and YOUR right to wear them.  After all, I was guilty of wearing mini (very mini) skirts in the day, as well as go go boots and extremely low rise bell bottom jeans.  I drew the line at tie dye.

Just because something is trendy doesn't mean it's a good idea.  Some of us suffer post traumatic stress from seeing people in poopie pants, velour tracksuits, polyester leisure suits, "Juicy" emblazoned across one's rear, oh and leg warmers and terry sweatbands as a fashion statement. I could go on......... History will be the judge.

Seriously, only you need to feel comfortable in what you are wearing.  That has always been my motto.  People will always be judgmental.  Who cares?  Not everyone likes every fashion trend.

If your concern is being turned away at dinner, why not quietly ask the Maitre'd before dinner.   He is actually available in the afternoon of boarding.  Posting on cruise critic will bring a lot of answers and you are spending way too much time defending yourself.

Chill and have a great cruise.

This thread reminds me of the Cannabis thread recently on the Royal Caribbean forum. An OP who asks for info from experienced cruisers and then spends an inordinate amount of time arguing with people's responses. There, it was a matter of interpretation, and the guy wanted to fight people if their interpretations he didn't like couldn't be proved by a written policy.

Here a question "Will I feel out of place...?" has elicited lots of people's opinions about what types of clothing seem "out of place" or not.

Based on the OP's many posts, it is obvious she will never feel out of place. The idea that "anything is appropriate if it is not against the rules" is a very odd approach for a teacher to take. There is also the spirit of the rules. "Be comfortable, please look nice" allows for lots of leeway.

As to ripped jeans, my opinion on the style is that I never understood them and cannot see why anyone thinks they are "cute".  Certainly not against the rules, and I know people pay hundreds of dollars to buy pre-ruined pants, and I think X would allow nice ones (does the code specify even that?).  But I don't get the trousers-down-showing-underwear style on men popular in some quarters, either. There is no rule against that style, though, so it must be appropriate!

I could care less about dressing up every night and putting on airs.

I think the salient point is not about putting on airs, so much as it is in showing pride in one's appearance. I think that is being lost on our younger crowd these days and that which is considered 'stylish' or in fashion for the moment is more important than looking nice and having pride in one's appearance.

I have a pair of those holey jeans. In fact I've had them probably thirty years, but they didn't start out holey and they are really no longer blue and they don't have any pretty filigree and most folks wouldn't think they are cute, unless maybe you were wearing them, of course. And yes, they are well worn, to the point of being tacky. But, the fading and holes were earned.

When we go for dinner at Luminae or Murano I will wear a dark blue suit, vest, and tie and I will be proud to be seen so well cleaned up. I won't wear my holey jeans, although I certainly earned the ideal.

Yes, I am in a Royal Suite, should that matter for any reason.

Simply, show pride.
