I called when they opened this morning about reservations I made last night in case our cruise gets cancelled we can do it next year. Took a while but I finally got someone and they linked my bookings and marked them no upgrade and answered a couple of hypothetical questions. They don't expect to have entire ships quarantined again like the Diamond.

Hawaii may have no local cases but there is at least one case of a Japanese tourist being diagnosed upon return from Hawaii.  Officially it's in the numbers for Japan but he was symptomatic at least on the plane from Hawaii.

No virus just goes away. I'm actually quite shocked that governments don't take influenza more seriously as in more preventative measures and public education. Until this Covid-19 outbreak, I had no idea how deadly the Flu was across the globe.

Yea, right.  Prior to this, ow many people who had norovirus symptoms would fill out the embarkation health form truthfully.  My dad was hard headed and he would have "just toughed it out" so as not to ruin his cruise.

 

From my reading of the two passengers involved, they had not been in the areas affected and have no known contact with people from those regions.  Plus keep in mind that is a rapidly evolving situation.  How people reacted 2-3 weeks ago are different in how they are reacting now.

 

See for example in regard to the run on disinfectant.  Last Friday I was in a Costco, the had a pallet full of Purrell type disinfectant.  Today I visited several grocery stores all of the stock was gone.  I imagine if I had visited the same Costco yesterday they would be out.

Really doesn't matter that you use the provided sanitizing at the entrance, or wash before you come.   

 

If someone has the virus and is in a cloud of virus filled water droplets coming from their lungs, breath, they will diffuse or be transfer to hands.  

 

At the buffet they insist you wash, say you wash, then touch your nose/sneeze etc. etc. then handle the tongs etc. etc. viola you got everyone sick

 

Then they touche the hand rail as they step down, touch the menu that is then handled by the waiters etc. then handed to you, and on and on and on.

 

You are short sighted to think because you wash all is good, or that a carrier washes and all is good.

 

Now you almost certainly have virus and people ill and floating around, and I posted another thread you are in the theater you think you are safe and won't catch anything there, or in the elevator or walking down the hallway / stairwell and hold the rail, LOL

SARS and MERS basically went away.  Might be some non-human reservoir left, but as an epidemic it more or less was contained.  SARS-COV2 is probably past that point...

 

Governments take flu pretty seriously... a lot of effort is put into the annual flu vaccine and trying to get everyone vaccinated...

No one speaks much about all the passengers who disembarked the cruise that the 2 people who had covid 19 were on. We know that of the 60 that took a back to back that out of those 10 or possibly more  are showing signs.  That is a pretty good per cent. So if the other 1000 plus passengers had similar infection rates that would be another 100 plus passengers who likely would have it. Where are they? Which airplanes did they fly, flight numbers, etc.       That's why this is so hard to contain.

What makes you think anything has changed re. Noro reporting?  If people were honest i guarantee there'd be a lot less reports of outbreaks on ships, and no doubt less people cruising but because people are filthy animals (actually i think animals are cleaner in a lot of respects) it means the illness continues to propagate.   Yes that's a harsh description but when you consider that Noro is avoidable if people follow basic sanitary practices.

I just read one of the linked stories and while it had a number of inaccuracies, it stated that the captain did not inform the passengers until FIVE HOURS after the Governor’s new conference.  If this is true, it is inexplicable.  Why try to keep passengers in the dark. People will find out anyway.  If I were on board, I would have liked to have known ASAP so I could be even more aware of hand washing.  Also, if I was coughing I would be less likely to assume it was just the common cruise crud cold.  And Given questions about whether the virus spread through the Diamond Princesses ventilation system, I might have decided to spend more time in the fresh air of the open decks and avoided my cabin.

 

Some report that the theater shows were cancelled, but the casino remained open.  Why?  The casino might even be a riskier place with everyone touching slot machines, cards and chips...or were these all being continuously disinfected.

UPDATE: "The ship will get test results tomorrow morning and then make a decision of what to do with us. Means we are not going on land today." -Mom No strict confinement, apparently, but a suggestion for diners to return to their state rooms.

 

They are suggesting that people skip a seat between each person when sitting in the dining rooms and also to maintain a distance of six feet from everyone else in general.

Foods are served to plates rather than self-served - Helicopters will come back this evening to pick up lab samples - The ship will NOT dock today in San Francisco

Considering how botched the Diamond confinement went, USA better step up their game and handle it better. Time for USA to lead by example. I'd bet they disembark and place passengers in a land based quarantine.

If I were guessing...we might have one of the floating navy medical ships getting involved.  No way will they let that many infected folks on land, since CA is already starting to be in the grips of its own land-based outbreak.

 

It might be why the military was already involved in the sample drop.
