Do they mothball the ships until the virus goes away? How many hoops is the average person, who is thinking about trying a cruise for the first time going to jump through? Those if us who love it are only going to jump so high before drinking cosmos in the comfort if my den will suffice.

Pretty much, or at least until a demonstrably effective vaccine is available. As for sitting in your den drinking cosmos, that may be a bit harsh but I don’t think you’ll be able to do that on a cruise for a long time. The best preventative would be to prevent crowding and maintaining the social distancing recommendations. Masks are great for crowds, BUT it would be better to really think about preventing as best as possible the log jams that we are all so familiar with on embarkation, MDRs, buffets and 10 dollar watch sales... Viral spread from doorknobs, elevator buttons, buffet spoons and tongs is easily controlled if the same hand washing and sanitizing that we all SHOULD be doing for Norovirus is all that is needed. People can of course introduce any germs of any kind into their own bodies with their hands and fingers, SO KEEP THEM OUT OF YOUR orifices and keep them clean... My wife and I will cruise as soon as we are allowed to and have 2 cruises already booked for this November and January. We will try to follow distancing, use stairs as much as possible, and avoid crowded lines where possible. We will wear masks in crowds. Hand cleaning and hands and fingers do not belong in mouths, noses or eyes. Edited May 27, 2020 by boscobeans

But until it is figured out it might be best for vulnerable people to avoid non essential activities like cruises. 2
hazence Posted May 27, 2020 #1131 Share Posted May 27, 2020 Maybe the RCCL will need to have designated masked and unmasked cruises. People will be assured they are cruising with those who share their mindset. 😎

Sadly you mistake that a authority, when in fact it's called freedom. So, when thugs on the internet virtue shame people that is not an attack on freedom? Funny how we think about Freedom so differently, not to mention Liberty, which is equally important. We theoretically have rights under the constitution. We theoretically have representative governments that write laws, that are passed by legislatures. Now we live in a nation ran by decrees of politicians called Governors and Mayors. Their expressed orders have the effect of laws without any Of the constitutionality of laws. So, that is the kind of freedom and liberty you think we deserve? Again, I wear a mask when I go into a business out of respect. I watched people chasing a woman out of a grocery store on tv last night for not wearing a mask. I saw thugs attacking an individual. You, apparently, see freedom fighters attacking a minority. The constitution was amended by the bill of rights in order to protect minorities. Because democracy in its purest form is just mob rule. Meta-analysis of risk ratios for the effect of face mask use with or without enhanced hand hygiene on laboratory-confirmed influenza from 10 randomized controlled trials with >6,500 participants. A) Face mask... In our systematic review, we identified 10 RCTs that reported estimates of the effectiveness of face masks in reducing laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the community from literature published during 1946–July 27, 2018. In pooled analysis, we found no significant reduction in influenza transmission with the use of face masks (RR 0.78, 95% CI 0.51–1.20; I2 = 30%, p = 0.25) (Figure 2). One study evaluated the use of masks among pilgrims from Australia during the Hajj pilgrimage and reported no major difference in the risk for laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infection in the control or mask group (33). Two studies in university settings assessed the effectiveness of face masks for primary protection by monitoring the incidence of laboratory-confirmed influenza among student hall residents for 5 months (9,10). The overall reduction in ILI or laboratory-confirmed influenza cases in the face mask group was not significant in either studies (9,10). Study designs in the 7 household studies were slightly different: 1 study provided face masks and P2 respirators for household contacts only (34), another study evaluated face mask use as a source control for infected persons only (35), and the remaining studies provided masks for the infected persons as well as their close contacts (11–13,15,17). None of the household studies reported a significant reduction in secondary laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infections in the face mask group (11–13,15,17,34,35) . Most studies were underpowered because of limited sample size, and some studies also reported suboptimal adherence in the face mask group. Disposable medical masks (also known as surgical masks) are loose-fitting devices that were designed to be worn by medical personnel to protect accidental contamination of patient wounds, and to protect the wearer against splashes or sprays of bodily fluids (36). There is limited evidence for their effectiveness in preventing influenza virus transmission either when worn by the infected person for source control or when worn by uninfected persons to reduce exposure. Our systematic review found no significant effect of face masks on transmission of laboratory-confirmed influenza. I really can’t believe you posted this. hazence Posted May 27, 2020 #1138 Share Posted May 27, 2020 I don’t think the pandemic is a hoax/conspiracy. I just don’t put up my umbrella because it’s raining in NYC. I have noticed when these refugees enter my magic zip code...in addition to attracting bears with their garbage cans and jogging on the wrong side of the road...they do adapt to our mask free folkways. 😎 So there is hope that away from home, on a cruise ship...they can relax a bit too.
boscobeans Posted May 27, 2020 #1139 Share Posted May 27, 2020 1. MASKS 2. SOCIAL DISTANCING 3. DRUG THERAPY 4. VACCINE ?????????????????????????????????????????? 1. Masks are very effective. Plain and simple. If they didn't there wouldn't be one person alive in Wuhan China and tens of millions in the over crowded streets, shops and unhygienic markets in the rest of China would be dead and dying at this time. They all wear masks, almost as a routine thing not only for disease control but also to to help with air pollution. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. Social distancing works because the major means of transmission is by aspirating droplets from infected sneezes or coughs and the distance reduces that risk. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. DRUGS? So far that is a whirlwind of proponents and naysayers for Hydroxychloroquine, current anti-viral drugs and herbal remedies. Hopefully the powers that be can decide which if any work and do it WITHOUT politicization. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. Vaccine? Hopefully they will be able to do what they have failed to do with other Coronaviruses and that is develop a vaccine, which will be rejected by many, no matter how effective or safe it is. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For now Social Distancing where possible and the use of a PROPERLY fitted face mask when distancing is not possible, seem to be what we must learn to accept until like many flues in the past it just goes away.
