Refundable Deposit vs Cruise with Confidence

I am looking to book a Royal Caribbean cruise for December 2021 and not sure about purchasing the Refundable Deposit. To me the Cruise with Confidence policy states as long as you cancel a cruise 48 hours before sailing you will get a 100% credit refund including the deposit. Is that correct? I am a bit confused because why are they still charging for a Refundable Deposit if it is already covered by this new policy?

We were looking at this too.   It seems the diff is between a credit and an actual refund.  At least that is how we want to read it.   I'm following in case someone can clarify.

That's also how I read it, and there is a difference between a credit and an actual refund. You'll only have a certain period of time to use the credit and after that you lose it. This isn't usually a concern for us since if we book a cruise we will be taking it unless the cruise line cancels it.

Howdy @Smhp and welcome to the Cruise Critic message boards! emo22.gif

Thank you for your first new thread on the Ask a Cruise Question forum. 👍  It is the forum for general questions regarding cruising. However, your thread is off-topic here since your topic concerns a specific cruise line.

To try to help you out, I have moved your thread to the Royal Caribbean International forum where it will be on topic. The majority of your fellow Cruise Critic members that have booked/sailed RCI frequent this forum and provide feedback here. Browse through the thread titles on this forum and l👀k for titles of interest. You will probably find  your fellow Cruise Critic members have already posted questions and received answers that will be of interest to you.

Cruise Critic is a great resource for new as well as experienced cruisers and we are so glad you found us! emo34.gif  Please feel free to browse the Cruise Critic Community Categories list. Read a few threads in the different forums to get a feel for what each forum is about. Make sure you read any pinned threads (aka Stickies) on the top of the first page of threads in a forum. You will find very important instructions or information there.

Please remember the following stated in the Guidelines we all agreed to follow when registering for our free Cruise Critic memberships:

Browse Before You Post
Browse a topic first to see if your question has already been asked or answered by someone else. Also, many of the major cruise lines forums have a FAQ (Frequently Asked Question) topic that has been created by our members. Give that a try first. Browsing is your #1 best resource! Please post your messages in an appropriate topic so that you'll receive the best possible response. It is very time consuming to move misplaced messages that are in the wrong topics.

Anytime you need to start a new thread/topic on a forum, first make sure you are in the correct forum for your topic. Word your new thread title in a way to help the members know exactly the information you seek. This greatly helps the members browsing through the thread titles and if they know the information they will reply to you.

It is best to limit each inquiry to only one topic or concerning only one cruise line, one ship, one port of call, etc. and of course, on the correct forum. emo3.gif  You will get more replies that way. Be sure to mention your cruise line, ship, port or sail date in your inquiry as that sort of information will help your fellow members help you.

Wanted to let you know the Cruise Critic Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date will be the place for you to get to know the other Cruise Critic members sailing with you before the cruise. Your fellow Roll Call thread members may have important information posted in your Roll Call thread. Especially those that have sailed your line, ship or itinerary before.

Also, the Roll Call thread for your cruise is the only place on Cruise Critic where you and your fellow Roll Call thread members are allowed to post personal ads about sharing private tours, excursions, transportation etc. with each other to 💲ave money. That is ... if they are allowed by then. There is a "captive audience" since you are all sailing together! emo3.gif You will receive a much better response to your share request if you take some time to read the entire Roll Call thread, post an introductory post about yourself, and continue on with more posts back and forth to get to know the other thread members and allow them to get to know you first before you post your share request. That is the spirit of our Roll Calls. emo34.gif

To explain our Roll Calls and finding the Roll Call thread for your line, ship and sail date, please read What is a Roll Call? Everything you Need to Know and How To: Create A New Roll Call if one has not been started for your cruise. For more information about our famous Roll Calls, please read the Roll Calls and Our Policy Regarding Facebook and Roll Calls sections in the Guidelines.

And don't forget, after your cruise be sure to submit your review for publication. Many cruisers will benefit from your experience! See How To: Submit a Member Review.

So sorry this is so long, but I sincerely hope this information will be helpful to someone new to posting on our message boards. So glad to have you aboard Cruise Critic! emo35.gif

Happy sails,

Host Kat emo32.gif

Keep in mind that a refundable deposit only applies prior to final payment due date, typically 90 days before the cruise departs.

After final payment is made, the type of deposit is irrelevant and everyone is subject to the cancellation policy or any special programs like CWC.

With a refundable deposit if you change your mind for a December cruise in June for example, you get 100% of your deposit back as a refund to the original form of payment.

If you make final payment at 90 days before the cruise and then two days later change your mind it's not refundable.  CWC allows you to cancel but you get future cruise credit good for a future cruise.  You would not get a refund if you cancel after final payment has been made. FCC has an expiration date.  It isn't valid for ever.

From my perspective, the restriction that a CWC credit must be used by 4/30/22 for a cruise beginning by 9/30/22 is becoming increasingly problematic.

The dates for FCC’s have already been extended twice and I suspect that they will be extended at least once more.

Counting on that.  Our only nonrefundable deposit is for the 9/12/21 Anthem from Southampton that seems unlikely to go as planned, particularly for folks like us coming from the US.

We asked about this when we were offered a much lower cost for booking non refundable way, we are told cruise with confidence does cover you to recieve the non refundable part as a FCC.

Just as Ellen said

Thank you both.

Throughout all this, I have been able to be at net zero on refunds, but I have a NRD deposit coming up on an itinerary I plan to cancel prior to final payment. Just wanted to be sure I could push that $500 to remaining balance on Feb 2022.

This is exactly what I find SO confusing, my cruise is Dec 2021, the cwc would be an option IF it was "use within 12 months" as originally offered ... But for me to cancel, use FCC by end of April THEN have to sail before 9/30/22 , doesn't work for me.

You would end up having to make final payment  and then cancel up to 3 days before your cruise in order to have your FCC’s extended 12 months.

I am guessing that the use by dates on FCC’s will be extended for a third time.

For a FCC good for twelve months, is the expiration  (1) book by, (2) begin cruise by, or (3) complete cruise by?
