Is port side the even number cabins and starboard the old number cabins?

Yes.  What did you decide?  May be old but they are odd. 🤔

This reminds of an old joke.

A crew man while walking past the Capt's cabin look in the port hole into the cabin.

He saw the Capt kneeling down in front of his safe.

He was reading a piece of paper.

Port is Left.    Starboard is Right.

Well it is a slow day.

It could be worse. Port used to be call Larboard. You had Starboard and Larboard. Easy to see why they changed things.

Might have been better if they  had kept that terminology.

At keast then you wouldn't have some cruisers who believe port means the side of the ship closest to the dock.

Theo! You've become a rare presence here on CC. Only a month now before your big trip. We will miss you on our December Panama Canal cruise but we certainly can't blame you for doing your other trip instead. It sounds fantastic. It was great to visit with you after our May cruise. Take care of each other and have a wonderful time.

But that is exactly what it used to mean! Read the info posted by Renmar. I knew this but didn't get into it here on CC. He helpfully posted a link that explains the origins. Port was Larboard which was the side of the ship that was loaded as the Steering Oar was on the Starboard side and the ships didn't dock with that side to the pier.

Same story about an accountant that retired.

His slip of paper read "Debits on the left, credits on the right."

Port and left both have 4 letters. For those ships that still use the red and blue carpet, port side has blue carpet. Again, 4 letters in blue. Elevators for the most part, face forward.

Also four letters" even

So even numbered cabins are on the left (port) on Princess ships.

As you face the bow of the ship, Port side is your left, Starboard side is your right.

There was a plane that crashed in England several years ago. The starboard engine caught fire. A cabin attendant called the cockpit and instead of saying starboard, said the left engine was on fire. The cabin attendant was facing the rear of the plane so the starboard engine was on her left.

The captain assumed left meant port and shut down the port engine which was the one that was not on fire. Down went the plane.

Well, the wrong engine was  shut down, but absolutely nothing to do with the cabin crew.
