Covid positive after cruise & another cruise coming up

Recommended Posts

I was on the july 17th mariner cruise on mariner. I came home and a few days later tested positive.

I have another cruise september 3rd.

I was thinking was there anything I would’ve done differently.

maybe worn a mask in the elevators.
maybe gloves and mask in the casino.

If anybody recently got off a cruise and tested positive and have another cruise coming up or already cruised again will you or did you do anything different the next time?

We don't do masks or gloves.  We just got off a 6 night EN cruise last week, some people are sick, but we're not.  We've done 40 cruise nights since last Nov and have not caught it and we do not do anything special other than washing our hands as we should and always have.

Our FB group for our Ovation cruise 2 weeks ago had lots of people posting that they tested positive after the cruise.  Many said that they never took elevators, sanitized their rooms, did not go to crowded shows, wore masks whenever in a public area etc, etc yet they still caught it.

Us, we all tested negative after the cruise and did not do anything different than we did when we cruised in 2019.

If the virus is going to find you it will.

Like Ken said if it's going to get you it will.  I came home and got covid after a HM cruise in May. I did take elevators but never ate in the WJ   It's just s--- happens  I will say that probably at least 10% of the people on every FB page I have been on in the past few months have come home and tested positive within a few days.

We sailed on the Mariner in May and I tested positive 2 days after getting home.

We just sailed on the Harmony two weeks ago and this time I did wear my N95 mask while standing in line to board and in the terminal.  I also wore it every time I stepped on the elevator,  in the Windjammer, when entering and leaving the shows and anytime I could see I was about to be in a close crowd.  I also wore it at the end of the cruise to debark the ship.

Whether or not it helped or I just got lucky I do not know, but I felt like I was doing all I could to protect myself and neither my husband nor myself came down with covid this time.

Just got off a Celebrity ship on Sunday.  I am positive.  We have an Enchantment cruise coming up September 22.  I am considering not going.  If we do go ahead, I don't think I will do anything different.  We also have a HAL cruise beginning of November.

We traveled all through Covid to the Islands since we could not cruise.  Started cruising again last August.  Did what was required and nothing more.  The minute they said no more masks, we stopped wearing them.  If you are going to get it, you are.  We wash our hands a lot, and that is it for us.

I am just curious so please don't take this the wrong way... how did you get home from the port?  If you drove did you have to stop for gas or food on the way?  We are not close to the port and have a few stops to fill up and eat before pulling into our driveway,  I could never assume if I came back from a cruise and tested positive that it definitely happened on the ship.

The most recent variants seem to have a quick incubation period.

In my case we drove home from the port.  Did stop for gas but it was pay at the pump outside.   Our couple of potty breaks were at rest areas and we were not near anyone.

I have no doubt I contracted covid while on the ship……not that it matters because as you said you can get it anywhere.

Thanks for responding,  we cruise agun in October and will see if we end up with the cron again.   The entire house is vaxed but after getting it around new year, I am just not worried about it anymore. If we get it we get it.

After cancer my husband seem healthier now than he has been in several years.

If you were just positive- there is no reason to do anything different, or wear a mask, or not go.  You will be the safest you've been- data shows its still the current B.A.5 variant- and no current signs of a major change.  Natural immunity is a real thing- enjoy it!

We also drove to the port. We quarantined before we tested. We did stop for gas. But wore masks when we had to use the restroom.

I started getting symptoms the day we got off. I had a backache but thought that it was from carrying our luggage off the ship. We self disembarked.

while driving home I looked on the group page on Facebook for our sailing and people had posted that they were in quarantine on the ship since Friday. Some people who got off the ship immediately drove to a cvs after getting off the ship. They had tested positive. When I walked in the door I tested and was negative.

the next day I had chills and again tested negative. The next day I tested positive. There were a lot of people in our group that tested positive after we got home.

so I know I was negative before we left because we quarantined. And I was fine until the day we got off. Our cruise was an 8 night.

I am vaccinated and boosted. Thought I was doing everything right.

I think I will be a little more cautious. Like wear a mask when it’s crowded. Try to take the stairs if I can. Wear a mask in the casino. Maybe gloves if playing a machine.

this was my first time getting it. My symptoms were more like a head cold/ allergies. But I was very tired. Still am. Just finally tested negative Saturday.

I was trying to research how long the antibodies will be in a persons system with this strain. Couldn’t find anything.

I am going. But was wondering if anybody did anything different.

Hi Marie,

We got off the Equinox in July. DH tested positive that evening. It got me 3 days later. We decided not to go ahead with our early Aug cruise. Our next one is in October and I do not know what I would do different. We are fine now. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. Starting to feel better. Just tired. I really thought we were doing the right things but it got us anyway. But it was so good to be back cruising. Our last cruise was September 2019. We had 4 cancelled due to covid.

I enjoyed our trip and are looking foward to the one in September.

Sorry to hear you are positive. Hopefully you will have mild symptoms and recover quickly.

We were on that cruise along with the one before it and the one after it. Visiting Coco Cay with ~6,000 passengers from another ship was probably not the best decision on RCL's part, but we tested negative after all three cruises. I'm not sure you could have done anything different to avoid it.

Took the words right out of my mouth. 🙂 DH and I currently have fairly serious cases, after dodging it for 2 1/2 years. We are contemplating switching up our vacay plans and taking advantage of the fact that for the next couple of months, we can get on a ship with virtually no worry of quarantine!

If nothing else, the thought gives us something to live for while we're miserable. 😄

Hubby and I were on a cruise that ended on June19th. In anticipation of our  June 20th cruise on a different ship, we took antigen tests on the first ship and both tested negative. However, during the course of the second cruise, I honestly thought I was catching a cold and then  we tested  again - I was positive, hubby still negative.

A few weeks after being at home and testing negative (twice) I happened to ask my doctor if/when he thought that I should get my second booster shot. We are actually overdue, but we had been away from home for quite some time (cruising!) and I wanted his opinion. He stated that I should be okay until 3 months from then because I should have developed some antibodies (or immunity) to get me through to that point in time.

I'm hoping that by October,  the newer, "up-to-date" Omicron-targeted vaccinations will be available - I'd prefer to have one of those as my booster shot.

I was also on that cruise. A handful of people in our group tested positive the day after the cruise including someone I shared a cabin with.  I've been on several cruises since the restart during all different stages of the social distancing and masking protocols.  I wouldn't do anything different honestly at this point.

While I never caught it on a ship, I've had it twice, including the middle of June which was likely due to air travel, so having been recently infected I wasn't worried about getting it on the cruise. I have another cruise in two days that I'm going to test for tonight, so crossing my fingers my natural immunity is holding up.

We have cruised thirteen times since the restart, on four different cruise lines.  We wear masks only when required, take elevators, attend shows, and have eaten in the MDR, Windjammer, and specialty dining.  We wash/sanitize our hands very frequently, avoid most ship excursions (only three since the restart) and tend to stay in adult-only areas as much as possible.  My SO had Covid two days after cruise number twelve.  We were together over 23 hours a day for seven days on the cruise and constantly after he tested positive, yet I did not get it.  We changed nothing for our next cruise and have no plans to do so in the future.

I'm fairly certain that the Covid I tested positive for on June 24 (after returning from a cruise) was B.A.5, but Walgreen's didn't let me know, lol. - just that the NAAT test was positive. As I wrote in an earlier post, I asked my doctor if/when I should get my second booster shot (I'm overdue.) He said, because I had just recovered from Covid, that I could wait 3 months due to the antibodies I had just gained.

True, IF we both had COVID.  So far, dh is negative and I am very glad.

Hello!

I am glad to hear you are fine now.  Are you considering an antibodies test before your October cruise?

I've cruised a bunch of B2B/S2S cruises since the restart: five last fall, three in January (during Omicron), five this spring (no masks to fly or cruise in the spring).  Never got COVID (or if I did, I was completely asymptomatic so never knew it).

I've been vaxed, but not boostered at all.  (Only reason I vaxed is so I could cruise.... PRIORITIES!)

I'm a nurse, so I am pretty vigilant with my hand hygiene and not touching my face or food with potentially contaminated hands.  But I don't avoid people, elevators, shows, shared dining tables, etc., and I never mask unless it's required.

If you're gonna get it, you're gonna get it.  Just like influenza and the common cold.
