I will honor Harvey Milk and Biodiversity is important for the health of our planet. I have an abundance of spinach and love pasta so am looking forward to the recipes. I have been to San Diego to embark/disembark cruises. I will be there again in January. Before the cruise we plan to go to the zoo. We are trying to decide what to do on our turn around day. Any advice or suggestions? Currently considering the ferry to Coronado, walk over to the Seaport Village or to the Little Italy Mercado. Thoughts? Positive thoughts to all people and animals who need them. Cheers to those with something to celebrate. This was my first find but didn't want to contradict Rich's days. 12 3
Rare tupper10 Posted May 22 #55 Share Posted May 22 @ger_77 Think of you and your DH procedure. I hope all goes well today. @kazu - Jacqui how horrible about Ivan. I hope that action is taken against the owner. @JazzyV Vanessa I hope your BFF gets released today and you got some rest last night after what was an exhausting day. Terri it sounds like you are feeling better today. Terry - I do love watching the crews work. I hope your street gets done quickly and you get some relief with your responsibilities. I hope the teenager and his GF have a great time at prom. Sandy - I hope you feel better soon since you have a long day tomorrow. It sounds like a great excursion. I hope everyone has a great day. Thank you to all who post in the daily. 19

We have been to San Diego many times, and DH lived there in the 1950s for a short time. The town has really changed and grown since then. When the DDs were little, we spent a couple of days there in our motorhome, and visited the zoo. Since then, it has been a cruise port, a turnaround day or we embarked or disembarked. I thought I had more pictures of the town, but they must be pre-digital. In 2009, we drove by the house DH lived in, and it was in the process of being flipped and enlarged. We were able to wander through it, and they were doing a nice job. Unfortunately, five years later, the new owners had really junked it up. In 2016, we had a port day while on the Ruby Princess. We walked down to the Midway and spent quite a bit of time exploring the ship. Here are just two of the pictures, but it is worth a visit. These are from our walk back to the ship. The remainder of the pictures are from various sailaways A submarine in drydock Lighthouses and markers on Point Loma The Del Coronado Hotel, where Some Like It Hot was filmed, even though the moving was set in Florida. It is pretty grainy as we were several miles off shore. As we were headed to the Panama Canal. Lenda Super photos Lenda. 10
Rare Nickelpenny Posted May 22 #59 Share Posted May 22 Happy Hump Day to all and thanks for the daily and fleet report. Three fantastic days to celebrate!! Had to giggle at the quote, yes to the meal, unfortunately no to the drink (peach Schnapps 🤢), yes to the wine and it was a sad day when Johnny did his last show. San Diego - as a Cali girl born and growing up, I have been there too many times to count. And now, I guess you could say, it is my home port. It is just a 6 hour drive from here so it is so accessible. No pics as I just don't think about it when I am there. Love Coronado and the Silver Strand Beach and then up the coast to La Jolla. I woke up this morning thinking "I will go walk the farmers' markets again today"! And literally in 1 second my thoughts were - "it seems too soon" "I just did it" "could I be that far out from surgery" "I have to take my knives to be sharpened" "wait, it can't be Sunday". Then I realized it was only Wednesday! I used to wake up like this when I was a travel nurse - What day is it, where am I, do I need to be a work today! So I chuckled to myself and got my coffee and turned on the tv and started planning my WEDNESDAY!! SMH!! It will be a nice day today with the high only getting to the low 90s. I think I have figured out the gate lock situation. I went to Lowe's yesterday and picked up some hardware that I think I will install today. The light may take a little longer as my original plan won't work because my outside umbrella will block the sensor on where I want it pointed. But there is another place - my carport that would be perfect; bad thing is, it will require me to use my large ladder and I am pretty sure it is heavier than the 10# I am allowed to carry. LOL!! So I will be a good patient and not do that right now. @tupper10 thanks for the nice sentiment yesterday. I really worked out pre-surgery to be in the best condition I could in preparation. And unfortunately, or fortunately, this is not my first rodeo. 15 various surgeries including 2 other back surgeries. 🤷♀️ @Sharon in AZ $500 seems more reasonable to me. I will do some more research and I have made an appt with a Banner doc so I do have some time. Heck, even my PCP may know someone and I see him on Friday! @ger_77 thinking of your DH as he undergoes his TAVR. @kazu Whoa on the dog attacked. I hope the SPCA will take it seriously. @JazzyV Hope your BFF is doing well and is discharged. Did they plate and screw the Tib/Fib? To be honest, I didn't even know AZ had fires until I read @JazzyV Care list! Thoughts for all and cheers to those celebrating! Keep those pics of blooming flowers coming!! I so enjoy seeing them. Have a great day everyone! 20
kochleffel Posted May 22 #60 Share Posted May 22 Yes on all the days. Biodiversity is a topic in the courses I'm taking. I would make the menu suggestion if I had the major ingredients (do have a lemon). I would like the drink. For the wine, Red Tail Ridge 2022 Pinot Noir, "Aromatics of black cherry, crunchy strawberry, and plum. Flavors of fresh strawberry & black raspberry with some baking spice & tobacco notes," $32.97, but I think that the Pinot Blanc from Monday would be better with the chicken. I have been to San Diego but never on a cruise or as a tourist, only for job interviews. One was so successful that they eliminated the job instead of hiring me. I'll be there in July for a conference at SDSU. 16

Cruising-along Posted May 22 #63 Share Posted May 22 Just popping in to say good morning! I need to leave in 20 minutes for my labs appointment, so just a quick hello. Then it's baking cinnamon rolls and packing up the car, then we'll pick up the boys from school (early release day, so that moves everything up earlier). I didn't sleep well last night, so today will be "interesting" but as they say, I will survive! 😉 We lived in San Diego for 6-7 years when DH was in the Navy, and have also sailed in and out of that port. Beautiful city, and the weather is lovely! Prayers for all on the Care List and a big cheer for all who are celebrating. I'll try to check in while we're gone...if possible. 🙂
Rare Vict0riann Posted May 22 #64 Share Posted May 22 Good morning, Dailyites, and thank you to all for the daily news. I'm praying for all those in need of my bit of intercession today, Gerry's DH, Tana, Jacqui, Pennie, et al. It poured all day yesterday, it looks a little bit nicer today, but still overcast. I'm lucky I took a picture of my first peony the day before, as it's probably water-logged by now! This is the peony that had two different colours of flowers last year, so I'll see what it will do this year. We have been to SD many times connected with cruises, and twice on driving trips. My DD cousin and her DH - also DD now, once took us to the Wild Animal Park, which is the most amazing place - the way every zoo should be. The enclosures for the animals are huge, we also had the good fortune to have a walk with a cheetah and her friend, a dog. It is out of town, but well worth a visit! 18

Our cruising friends who live in La Jolla picked us up and took us to their lovely home to spend the night prior to embarking. But first we went to lunch at Bali Hai on Shelter Island. Here's the view across San Diego bay from our table at the restaurant. Following that we drove to Port Loma peninsula where we viewed the Cabrillo National Monument. Nice views from up there. Then the view from their front deck at their beautiful home. You could hear the waves from there. The next morning before they dropped us off at the ship we drove to Coast Boulevard Park for a final look at the coastline. We even got to watch a wedding taking place. Leaving port later that day on the Maasdam. The restaurant we ate at the day before, Bali Hai. And a U.S. submarine Nice collection of photos Sandi. I hope you are feeling a lot better now.
Rare cruising sister Posted May 22 #66 Share Posted May 22 Good morning, I have a busy day ahead. I am picking up DGS at noon on his last day of kindergarten. We are baking our mini murphs from Papa Murphy’s and off to miniature golf. I had a surprise this morning when I ran into a couple I met on the Volendam who were here visiting grandchildren and picking up Papa Murphys too. It really is a small world. Here is a picture of the grands. Luke is all ears and teeth so excited to finish kindergarten. 27

I'm glad you enjoy it. @Nickelpenny It sounds like recovery is coming along just fine. @StLouisCruisers Sandi, I vote with the majority - take the medicine. @Cruising-along Have fun with the grands. I hope you get through the day ok. Here is a picture of San Diego that I took last January as we sailed off to Hawaii. We really need to work in another Hawaii cruise. Or maybe just a trip to Hawaii. 18
bennybear Posted May 22 #69 Share Posted May 22 Good morning and thanks all! @ger_77 praying all goes well today! @kazu I am so sorry to hear your news! Foot infections can be so nasty, I’m hoping you get some improvement soon! When DH had foot surgery his surgeon wouldn’t even allow him to swim in the ocean a month later just in case. And yikes, poor Ivan, nothing scarier. I am hoping he is okay, poor guy! I am so over these entitled people, our elderly lab was attacked by a standard poodle and the owner was ridiculous. beautiful San Diego 13

Seasick Sailor Posted May 22 #71 Share Posted May 22 My sister has been living in San Diego since 1983 'ish. Best of all, we have been there, done that, as my sister believes we need to be entertained each time we visit. Ann @cat shepard describes the usual touristy things but here's a few unique things we enjoyed over the years. Our friend Bud Taylor was a Top Gun pilot and his aircraft is on the Midway. He has free VIP tours for life and we always have lunch on the back deck and he tells everyone his stories. We loved the kayak Sea lion caves in LaJolla. Must have been 4 or 5 times. (Stinky, but so much fun) The all you can eat lobster at Valley View casino. I have the top number eaten out of the Family "5" Lights tour of S.D., Ghost tour, Scripps Aquarium, races at Del Mar, hmmmm Restaurants: Skip Eddie's and go to Island Prime. Loved Little Italy. Off the beaten path is Ambrogio. DS swears it's the best pizza and we've been several times. We've only had pizza, but the menu looks great. 12

Labs done, cinnamon rolls baked. You'd think we were going to be away for a week with the amount of food we're bringing for those boys. Waiting now to hear lab results -- because of the GANZ it's been 9 months since my last A1C instead of 6. I tried to be good on the cruise.....we'll see. Edited to add that the Hemogram results just came in (they're fast!) All in the normal range. Edited May 22 by Cruising-along

Interesting days but meh on the quote. I’m in on the meal. Hard to believe Johnny Carson’s last Tonight Show was 32 years ago. We’ve been to San Diego but not on a cruise, beautiful city. My heart goes out to the victims of all the tornadoes the US has had so far this year, we’ve experienced quite a few hurricanes in our 30 years in Florida but IMHO tornadoes are nastier as there is not much of a warning when a twister is about to occur. Have a great day and stay well. Recorded Johnny Carson’s last show 32 years ago on a VCR tape. Anyone have a video player so I can see it?
