The next step in "Modern Luxury"...

...is to go no-smoking. I'm serious. Smoking isn't modern, nor is it luxurious. The argument that non-smoking ships failed is not relevant, times have changed (rapidly). If Celebrity is serious about attracting new clientele, as well as keeping repeat customers happy, moving the line to non-smoking is something that can't come soon enough. Will there be smokers that take their business elsewhere? Of course. Will the loss of that business be more than offset by new bookings that are done specifically because Celebrity has made the bold move to cater to the majority? Absolutely.

The only place I ever smell smoke is when I pay for a vacation. That makes no sense.

Celebrity... time to make a bold business decision. You can lead, follow, or get out of the way. Be a leader.

Carnival has tried that....didn't work then...won't work now. Until NO ONE smokes, or it is illegal, then don't expect full "non-smoking" ships. Smoking areas are so limited now, if you stay away from those designated areas, you shouldn't have a problem.

Although I personally do not smoke, I travel with a smoker. I can assure you that if celebrity were to go to non smoking ships, not only would they lose the smokers revenue, but the revenue of the non smoking travel companions.

Celebrity is a business and will continue to make decisions based on what is good for their bottom line and the best interest of their investors. It is short sited for the OP to think that Celebrity or any other business makes decisions for any other reason.

Very well said.

The center for Disease Control and Prevention last August estimated there are just over 42 Million smokers in the USA or roughly 1 in 7 people. On an S class ship carrying 2800 pax X could potentially say goodbye to a minimum of 400 paying customers. That number could climb if you add non-smoking spouses.

They would find another line (currently every ship afloat) where they could enjoy a cigarette with their Mojito and never set foot on X again.

X already has to give stuff away to get the cabins filled-in my case the 1,2,3 Go promo which is keeping about $1200 in my pocket that I would otherwise have spent on Princess. 5 S class ships suddenly alienating 400 pax min. per voyage times 52 voyages a year... have to find 104,000 new non smoking pax to fill the gap. Not good business. Then add the M class.

I'm a smoker on Princess. They also have very few smoking sections but those they have are for the smokers. In the Caribbean on the Ruby in January there were 12 tables for smokers by the Tradewinds Bar. On the Emerald in the Med in September there were 24 tables as there were so many Europeans, Australians and British onboard too.

Princess catered to their smoking customers on board. I can't imagine an X ship leaving Barcelona full for instance with a "smoke free policy". Carnival tried it on ONE ship and gave it up as a bad idea. Lesson learned, surely?

I am a cigar smoker on occasions. Being in a northern climate, I look forward to our cruises in January or February to not only relax, but to enjoy a cigar in 80 degree weather. I respect and comply with the smoking policy on the Celebrity Cruise Ships. The areas that I can have a cigar on a Celebrity ships are so small compared to the overall public areas and for someone to complain about me enjoying my cigar in area designated for smoking is very narrow minded. If you don't like smoke, stay away from the "limited" areas where smoking is allowed. Life is too short to be so judgmental on a vacation!

I wholeheartedly agree with MACruisers (and, not just because he's a good friend ;)). I think that such a decision would be short-sighted on the part of Celebrity, and could have unintended consequences.

For the record, DH and I are life-long non-smokers -- who tend to avoid cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke, whenever possible. Back when we first started cruising on RC, folks could smoke just about anywhere. The only exceptions were the theater and dining venues. We always booked balcony cabins, and never noticed much problem with smoke, out there. Then, RC banned smoking in cabins -- but, NOT on balconies. We quickly found ourselves surrounded by folks who smoked non-stop on their balconies -- and who invited their friends/family from the inside cabins to join them. In that case, a well intention-ed change in the smoking policy actually made things worse.

So, my concern with X going totally "smoke free" is this: Are smokers going to continue to cruise on X? Well, if their friends/family (like MACruisers) prefer X -- of course they will. So, where exactly do you think those poor nicotine-deprived souls (not you, Chris :p) might be tempted to sneak a puff or two? Yeah, the balcony would be my first bet!

Bottom line: X only has a few outdoor areas for smokers, which the rest of us can easily avoid, with a little advanced planning. Unlike RC, we don't have to see if we can hold our breath long enough to run through the casino, to get from one end of the ship to another. Maybe we should just let sleeping dogs lie, on this one.

So smokers should not be able to take cruise vacations? I'm not a smoker but I'm happy with the way things are.

I support this thought as well. Just as long as there are specific places for smokers I Am happy with that.

As X caters to my food preferences and beverage preferences, I believe that smokers have a place on the ship rather I agree with the use of tobacco or not. Before long the Temperance League will be out in full force.

IMO only.

I can find other 'safe' places on the ship from smokers if I have to and my vacation would not be spoiled. I have done it before and it was never a problem.

But it sounds like a good business opportunity for someone enterprizing and desirous of such a ship...

bon voyage

From over 30 years ago. I also cannot stand the smell of smoke and especially how Many not all smokers smell.

Having said that, If people want to smoke in the places allowed at the present time LET THEM.

Smokers are gamblers and that is why the Casino allows smoke, to attract gamblers to spend money.

Bottom line is simple profits will win every time.

I wonder if they might have/try/experiment with a NON SMOKING cruise once in a while?

AFAIK, X ships do not allow smoking in the casinos. I sure didn't notice any while on Silhouette last year.

As far as their current policy goes, it's seems to work fine. As long folks who smoke do so in their designated areas, I'm good. They can feel free to keep doing so.

And as long as I can have the run of the ship, except for the designated smoking areas, I'm good.

Well, one last comment, from me on this, there are several fully 'non-smoking' lines which one can try to see if that truly meets their expectations.

I Am not a smoker by any means, well I do smoke cigars when I can get away with it when out with friends, but smokers should have a venue to do their legal deed rather I agree with it or not. It is my choice to choose another line if I do not like the policy or the individuals engaging in the legal act too.

bon voyage and go with the aromas of a good time... :D

Not happening any time soon.

Lines with large ships like Celebrity need group business, and in groups of any significant size there will be smokers. Partial and full-ship charters would be out as well and we know how much Celebrity loves them some charters! :p

The smoking areas are so easy to avoid I don't have a problem.

I enjoy cruising for breathing the fresh clean sea air, that is just not the same with smoke in the air.

On S class Deck 5 has outside walking and one side of the ship allows smoking on that entire side. On many days one side of the ship is more desirable (sun, wind, spray, etc) than the other and if that happens to be the smoking side then I tend to avoid it. I would like to see deck 5 go no smoking on both sides, most days there were very few smokers out there but enough to foul the fresh air.

Inside a Celebrity ship is so wonderful with no smoking anywhere. Fresh air everywhere! Other lines allow it in the Casino and that tends to creep into a lot of other spaces. This makes me want to cruise X and avoid any lines that allow inside smoking.

But all of the places where smoking has been banned are for a few hours at most--not days or weeks. I don't smoke, but I, personally, would not want to sail with a ship full of rabid anti-smokers. If they're that uptight about stamping out the 3 or 4 smoking areas out of the thousands of square feet on a boat, I can only imagine what their attitudes about a myriad of other things would be. They're the very definition of control freaks. No thanks!
