Upsell Fairy is Alive and Well

I just received a nice upsell for our upcoming 10-day-Mexico cruise on the Ruby Princess. The offer was a move up from an Cat. IE, to a Cat BC, for $159.00, per person. This made the cost of the balcony $918.00, per person, plus the port taxes.

As this is our 10-year-Wedding Anniversary, I was very happy to accept this offer.:D

The sad part is that the other two couples traveling with us did not receive the offer.:( However, our new cabin is just down the hall from the old one, so we are looking forward to some sailaway parties on our balcony.

It makes me wonder why some passengers get the upsells and some don't. In the other two cabins, one couple are first time cruisers, and the other couple is platinum and using the casino rate. Maybe because we are Elite?

First time cruisers are not offered up-sell offers.

My guess is that they only offer it to so many as they know they can only accommodate so many. If they offered it to everyone in insides or outsides to balcony, they would have to turn a lot of people down.

I have heard that the more upsells you accept, the more likely you are to get one on a future cruise...

Congratulations on your upsell and your anniversery!!

Thank you:D

I have also heard that the more upsells that you accept, the more likely you are to be offered. I think over the last two years, I've been offered four upsells, and I have accepted three of them.

Wow...we've never even been offered one! We did once get a free upgrade from inside to an obstructed oceanview on the Crown. It was a really nice room ... alas, never an upsell. Maybe one day if we keep booking cruises. :D

Can you be offered an upsell if you've marked your reservation no upgrade?

Yes! It happened to me last November. We went from a delux window to a window suite! A 15 day cruise for only $199 for each of us. And we had it marked NO UPGRADE.

We've had a couple upgrade and upsells in the past so maybe not turning any down might put you on the track for future offers. We have two cruises scheduled this year and would be perfectly happy for another upsell offer.

Oh, and we aren't ELITE...yet.:p

We are sailing on the same cruise and we received an upsell offer from a Mini-Suite to a Aft Suite (which we abruptly took advantage of!) This is the 3rd upsell offer we have been given and the 3rd we have taken. Happy Anniversary and see you on board!

We were also offered an upsell for our British Isles cruise in early May, from a Cat MA mini suite to a penthouse suite. We grabbed it, it was a fraction of what the printed rate was for that cabin. We are Platiunum but have never received an upsell offer before, and were surprised to get it for a cruise still almost 8 weeks out.

Congrats!! Love the upsells! As for your friends not getting it, mine have always specified "platinum and elite captain's circle members only" or "captain's circle members only" or "elite captain's circle members only". Look at the top of yours to see if it indicates the target recipient; it may have very just been for elites.

If so, then the question is ---> how do you get the first upgrade/upsell offer??

I've never gotten one and seriously doubt that I ever will. :(

Well, if you keep booking suites it's not likely you will ever need an upgrade or upsell.:D Just kidding.

I was on your same Hawaiian cruise in November. I know you were in a suite (we ran into each other in Sabatini's for breakfast) and you were also on the same roll call. I also remember you booked a suite (Owner's suite?) for a future Med cruise with the great bonus we received on our ill-fated Hawaiian cruise. You're a "suite" gal. :)

But, to answer your question, which is a good one, I believe that cruises that are not selling well are most likely to offer upgrades/upsells. It simply increases your odds for getting one.
