Coralc Posted January 23, 2018 #52 Share Posted January 23, 2018 I love the idea of RCCL implementing a dedicated smoking lounge instead of it being the casino! I really like to gamble, but can't stand the haze in there. It sucks when I'm doing well at a table and someone sits down next to me and lights up. I don't want to move because I'm doing well, but can't stand to stay because of the stench. These days, less than 15% of Americans smoke. While that 15% should have the right to do as they wish, the other 85% should also be able to enjoy the casino as long as they want to. Confession: I was a smoker for many years, but have been smoke free for close to 20 now. I do understand the smoker's desire/need to have a cigarette. I also used to think that non-smokers were just whiny, and it wasn't as bad as they said. Now I know how wrong I was! Dear smokers: you don't think the smell is that bad, but that's because you can no longer smell it. I can't even BELIEVE I used to walk around smelling like that! And, if you add up what you spend in a year on cigarettes, you'll probably find you can take more cruises or upgrade to suites if you quit. Thank you. Smokers would be very appreciative of an indoor smoking lounge. When RC prohibited smoking on balconies, they promised that there would be one indoor smoking venue on each ship. Someone at the corporation decided that (on most ships) that would be the casino. I don't think it is a solution that satisfies anyone.
payitforward Posted January 23, 2018 #53 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Not really a "Confession" but a lecture. If I was going to lecture, I would have gone into the health implications, and how their right to have a cigarette tramples on my right to breathe. I would have told people not to smoke. Instead, I suggested that smokers get their own private lounge and said that I understand the need. As for the fact that smokers stink, it's something I didn't realize when I smoked. I thought that a lot of smokers might like to know. (Not that they'll believe it. I didn't.) Finally, I thought suggesting they might be able to cruise more would be a nice incentive for those who want to quit. If you saw it as a lecture, that's just you feeling defensive. If you want to smoke, go for it.
colocop004 Posted January 23, 2018 #54 Share Posted January 23, 2018 As I smoker and gambler, I agree with everything said in this thread. I prefer the non-smoking casinos on Celebrity. In fact I voted for the state wide indoor smoking ban in Colorado many years ago. I have no problem going outside and take a break from the casino. We were also on Freedom last month and I would agree that the smoke was very bad in the casino. I did find it interesting that the bar tender would not allow smoking while sitting at the bar. They did have an area for non smokers, but there was never anyone there. It had been several years since we sailed RCI and I was shocked that smoking was still allowed in the casino. This is not just an RCI problem, I was on Princess in 2015 and the only difference was that there was a small section of the casino that allowed smoking, and the rest of the casino was non-smoking. The smoke did drift throughout the casino. But now that I think about it, I believe they also had non-smoking nights where there was no smoking allowed. If RCI wants to allow smoking in the casinos, there should at least be a compromise with non-smoking hours or nights. Milwaukee Eight Posted January 23, 2018 #57 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Was this just for that specific sailing? I've seen others post here on CC the same complaint about smokers not gambling but using the casino as a smoking lounge. Yep. I complain the Non Players use the Casino for a indoor smoking area. I see it all the time. Someone mentioned a test. Royal already did one for the month of September 2016 on Enchantment. I was on 4 days during the test. It was nice playing in a smoke free casino. In September on Freedom President Cruise, MB and his Casino director addressed a question regarding smoking in the Casino. It was explained that revenue dropped ~30% on the Enchantment test. Sounds like it is a revenue thing. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

If I remember correctly the Escape casino was originally nonsmoking, but after a few months Norwegian changed it b/c their traffic and revenue were down. On the other hand it’s obviously working for Celebrity. We have friends who are gamblers who have been on Equinox, Silhouette and Reflection and they love the smoke free casinos. sxphil Posted January 23, 2018 #59 Share Posted January 23, 2018 Casino's ARE RCCL's smoking lounges UNFORTUNATELY I am married to a smoker but on the Harmonys inaugural cruise I couldn't believe how many smokers were in there

OburgOrange Posted January 23, 2018 #62 Share Posted January 23, 2018 I just got off FOS last week. The smoke was oppressive in the casino. We couldn’t go in it. Not only that, it wafted up the stairway to the Promenade. We could smell it sitting at the British pub in the outside section. It was pretty bad

purescottish Posted January 24, 2018 #64 Share Posted January 24, 2018 I remember a cruise on Adventure a few years ago, we hit a bad storm and outside decks were closed off, we had a lifeboat crash down onto the railings and deck, and some flooding, smokers were told to go to the casino, this was at 5am, the place was packed as no-one could sleep and even as a smoker it was dense and thick..I may add now that I had a heart attack a while after that cruise and I have now not smoked for 2 and 1/2 years, but I feel for both smokers and non smokers, there will never be a happy medium between the two
Rare BillOh Posted January 24, 2018 #65 Share Posted January 24, 2018 Each cruise...each DAY will be different! If there happen to be a lot of smokers, the smoke is heavier. Can't predict it. Casinos don't want to drive away their gamblers by restricting smoking. I guess they need gambling police, many times there are 20-30 smokers just using the area as a smoking lounge. griffy116 Posted January 25, 2018 #66 Share Posted January 25, 2018 I don't really see 20-30 smokers preferring to use the casino as a smoking lounge unless it's a storm or pouring rain on them outside.

I don't like the smoke, but RCCL does list the casino as an allowable place to smoke. I imagine, it is easier to step into a casino and smoke rather than go up to deck 15 (oasis) and stand outside in the wind and elements. There are signs on the table games that note only players can use the chairs. No such signs exist for machines. M

Milwaukee Eight Posted January 25, 2018 #72 Share Posted January 25, 2018 how dare they follow the rules and smoke where they are allowed. Actually it’s not allowed on most ships. Just not enforced. The cruise Compass normally lists the permitted smoking areas. The Casino is indeed listed for those that are playing. Not for those not playing. Most all compasses I recall, have the wording while playing. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
Rare island lady Posted January 25, 2018 #73 Share Posted January 25, 2018 I would still like to see RCI put doors on the entrances to the casinos. It would keep the smoke from drifting all up through the common areas outside of the casino.
travelplus Posted January 25, 2018 #74 Share Posted January 25, 2018 What they need is better ventilation and close the doors to contain the smoke as well as clean and replace the carpets often. Also they need to find a path so that people sensitive to smoke do not have to pass through the casino to reach other public areas like The Schooner Bar along with signs to avoid the Casino both for kids and those who are offended by the smell etc.
