What's the rudest or strangest thing you've seen recently on a Royal Caribbean ship?

Recommended Posts

Once we were at a table for 10 where one couple showed up 25 minutes late every night. Finally, on Day 3, the waiter took our orders and served our starters without waiting for them. When the late couple showed up, the woman read him out, complaining that he should have known they were coming and waited for them; she said she's a travel agent and is too busy doing business in the Diamond Lounge to "worry about" coming to dinner on time. However, for the rest of the cruise they did show up no more than five minutes late.

If I had to wait 25 minutes for tablemates to show up for a waiter to take my order, I'd have said something on day 1. IMHO, the doors should have been closed by 25 minutes so the couple wouldn't have been able to join in anyways.

This past cruise, I only experienced a few truly rude and strange things.

The people with the giant stroller, with no child in the stroller, and who would try to push through lines and down narrow walkways using the stroller as a battering ram.

The lady who brought her soda package cup to the MDR and insisted the asst waiter get her a very specific flavored beverage that is only available from the Freestyle machines. It took at least 15 minutes to convince the guest that the MDR machines can't make strawberry kiwi diet lemon lime soda.

The cruise in 2016, we had a very drunk man in his 20's in front of us at muster. He was trying to flag down all the women that passed by, trying to put his cocktail glass in his pocket, and trying to take selfies while unable to stand still. Security stood right next to him for the rest of muster. We doubt he remembers his cruise at all.

A woman hand feeding a dog in a stroller in the MDR.

I think this woman was on Oasis last time we cruised. It made me NUTS!!! She had 2 dogs in a stroller. OBVIOUSLY not service dogs. If I couldn't being my dog, why was she allowed to bring hers?

Just leave them home!

I'd like to see a "How to use elevators" added to the safety briefing. Why do people barge in before people exit? It's strange AND rude.

The strangest I saw recently was a big guy absolutely 110% hammered in board shorts, no shoes, no shirt, in the Schooner Bar out of control, loud, obnoxious, during trivia on Enchantment. We left after the first question. Total trash.

Now that takes all - no dogs in MDR - I would have gone right to the captain on that one. You can’t do it in a regular restaurant why is is it allowed on a ship . The dogs have to left at home- if necessary with their owners -

On embarkation day, when the buffet area is packed and crazy with people trying to find a spot to have lunch, there was a group (at least 5) of middle aged women (old enough to know better) who had there bare feet on the dining tables!

I'll never forget the time we were in line for Johnny Rockets to open for lunch. There was a nice orderly line with the exception of one woman. The people who were in line went in at opening and got their seats. The wait staff started to take everyone orders. This woman, who came in after all those waiting proceeded to throw a hissy fit because she had to wait.

She went so far as making them call in the head manger of all the restaurants to complain. All of us witnessing this just shook our heads. I remember saying something loud enough for her to hear but can't for the life of me remember what it was. The crew members work very hard...they don't need an entitled brat throwing a temper tantrum. It just makes me insane when I see passengers berating the crew!

You can bring your dog if you want to. Just claim it's a service animal. You can get fake certificates online.

John&lala, never say sorry, as that word is an admission of self guilt. And can be used as an acknowledgement of wrongdoing. Just stick to your guns and say how you feel.

Had you not began with sorry... your post would have been a valid opinion from your POV. You would definitely not want to be at my table. A bunch of loudmouth NJ,NY litigators who never stop working.

In fact, we have a large group sailing next Nov. on the Anthem. One of my friends actually booked two of his staff in the cabin next to their suite. So work can be conducted. Thats a lifestyle. Not many can live with.

But like everyone else, we all see things with different color filters.

Be well, i enjoy your posts very much. You seem to be well traveled, and genuine.

So being from NY and a loudmouth litigators exempts one from being rude. And you concern yourself about a laptop sitting on top of the dining table. Such as it is. IMO, with your post you've just disqualified yourself as someone that can see, comprehend, and grasp rudeness.

If it was work related, why did his kids keep running over to see?

I GET having to work on vacations; I've been known to work on vacations-(although the husband really gets pissed, so i don't anymore!)...but the DINING room is NOT the place. If someone MUST have a videoconference during that hour, STAY IN YOUR ROOM AND GET ROOM SERVICE.

Sorry, working on laptop or conducting business is just rude. Just excuse yourself and deal with it on your own

Was in line a few years ago getting Crapes made in the Windjammer. This guy walks right in front of the line and tells the cook what he wanted. The cook just looked at him. I was next in line and the cook put the crape on my plate once it was ready. The guy trying to cut in said..hey that's mine. The Chef directed him to the end of the line. At that point he threw a 2 year old temper tantrum and threw his empty plate on the floor. I only wish security had been around and took care of the matter, but he just walked away in anger. We all just shook our heads.

On the Freedom in December:

Saw a couple in the pool licking each others tongues. Literally sticking their tongues the whole way out and licking the other person's tongue. Like tongue fencing. It was beyond gross and really strange too. This was around noon in the solarium. Take it to your room.

Stood up to leave the variety show in the theater and happened to look on the floor of the the row behind me and saw a stack of pizza crusts. I guess it would have been too much of a bother to not throw the crusts on the floor. There was probably 4 or 5 of them laying there.

In the MDR a little boy (maybe around 11) tied his napkin to his head like a hat. Ok he's a little kid, so what? Not a problem. But then every adult at the table tied napkins to their head as a hat. They did this on more than one night. I'll chalk that one up to more odd than rude. :D

When we were o the Oasis in 2013, at the sale in the Royal Promenade either the last night, or the night before, a bunch of Japanese women were so in a rush to get anything they could get their hands on actually knocked one of the RCCL employees to the ground. No sorry, they just kept going over and around her. I was finally able to get through and pick her up. She was shaken, but OK. Could have been worse, but it never should have happened.

I do agree that seeing someone working on a laptop at the MDR may raise fellow cruiser’s curiosity, but I don’t necessarily agree that it would be considered rude unless others are being bothered by the lit screen or audio. Plenty of people have working dinners or lunches at restaurants on land, even at fine dining establishments.

With all of that said, I am not going to judge those who must work on vacation and who unfortunately must be glued to a laptop. For many years, my wife had an extremely demanding, high pressure, high stress corporate job with tight deadlines. Although this job provided the means for us to pay our bills and even go on vacation, it also demanded a lot of time that should’ve otherwise been spent as a family. Those with this type of job know that being on vacation doesn’t mean that you get to disconnect from work. Deadlines still need to be met, and your company doesn’t care how you get the job done as long as (sometimes unrealistic) goals are met. And they don’t care if a deadline happens to conflict with family time at dinner.

My wife was guilty of taking work on vacation with us more than once. Although she never took her laptop to the MDR, she did take it with her to other venues around the ship, and even on shore excursions. She believed that, even if she needed to work on a project that had a deadline right in the middle of an activity on the ship, at least she could be physically present with us and partially enjoy the vacation. This option seemed more appropriate than staying behind while the rest of the family enjoyed the vacation without her.

Many times, she felt tortured because she was required to choose between work time and family time. If work was neglected, then our family finances were neglected. It wasn’t a good place to be but unfortunately one that we found ourselves in, and one which many other families face these days.

Long story short, the demands and high pressure of her job finally took a toll on her health and she was forced to make the tough decision to leave a career that she’d had for 15 years. Fortunately by then, I had advanced enough in my career to minimize the financial impact that the elimination of her career would have, as long as we made some adjustments.

We are now in a much better place, and what we lost financially, our family has tremendously gained in other blessings that can’t be measured in dollars. But for many years, we couldn’t see a different path than the one that we had taken.

Because I personally know how hard it is to find oneself in that position, I can’t judge others who still find themselves trapped in the demands of a high energy and high pressure job and who must power up their laptop at inopportune times on vacation. I don’t personally know what their own responsibilities or career demands are. All I can hope for is that they can eventually find a way to break free from that type of life.

Some may consider a laptop at the MDR to be bothersome, rude or distracting. But I personally consider it more rude and self righteous to judge someone who may find themselves in a position where they feel forced to take work with them, even to dinner.

While this situation is unfortunate; I understand that it can happen. However, there are certain places that a laptop should not be taken due to the ambiance - and I would label the MDR, specialty restaurants, and theater/lounge shows as such. Partially due to the light and clicking of keys created by using a laptop. Partially because it’s rude no only to your traveling buddies but the staff. The staff are trained to provide you with a certain experience and can’t do this if your eating space is taken up with a laptop. And if you are sharing a table with others, now you are taking up double the space due to having food and a laptop on the table. If work has to be completed by a certain time then scheduling dinner around it or eating at the buffet are perfectly fine options. But not working while the MDR staff is trying to serve you a nice meal.

Oasis in October.

We were having dinner in the Solarium Bistro and our table overlooked the pool. A woman was practically nursing off a very large man's breasts in the pool. It went on forever. Luckily it was a 4 top and I changed seats.

Quite a few examples here are PDA'S. I cannot stand them. On the Anthem, there was a very young couple on the pool deck that might as well have been naked. Really? Perhaps they were on their honeymoon, but who the heck wants to see that? Ugh..perhaps my age is showing.

Dogs in restaurants is very common in Europe.

But they are not fed there, the typically lie quietly under the table.

I'll start ... just recently on the Navigator, during dinner service, someone had a laptop on the table where his place setting should be. His kids kept coming around to see what was on his screen. I mean ... really!!??

In Giovanni's on Freedom in June there was a family of 10 next to us and they had a chess board on the table and actually playing chess while their kids were running around their table.

On Allure, we were standing in line waiting for our cards to be scanned for the ice show. We were next to be scanned when a man and woman literally shoved us aside and said, "We're suite people so we get in first." The Royal employee very nicely said, "You will go to the end of the line, sir" and proceeded to reach for my sea pass card and scan it. She continued to scan other cards and did not look at the guy. I don't know what happened after I went inside, but that same guy got on the elevator with us after the show. It was a packed elevator and we were in the back. He and his wife refused to move when we got to our floor. I kept saying "excuse us" and he would not budge. The doors shut and he smiled. I asked him if he felt better now and he ignored me. We both got off at the next floor and he went on his merry way. Some people are just jerks.

Gross as well as rude. A guy spitting on the walking track as he was doing laps. I reported him to a pool attendant. He was also watched by the pool attendant who also saw the guy spit. The pool attendant reported the guy to his boss. The guy was stopped and talked to and then escorted off the track by the pool attendants boss and a security officer.

Got you beat.. standing in buffet line for lunch. Man "farmer" blows his nose onto floor. I almost went spastic! I don't care what happens in the kitchens now. I ALWAYS eat in dining rooms.
