Who do you tip?

My wife and I are booked on our first cruise staying in a suite. Who are all the people you give extra tips to? I believe that tipping extra is something you should do. But I don't want to go crazy. Here is a list I made , tell me if I missed anyone or if you don't normally tip them. If you would like, let me know how much for each. I put a question marks if I am not sure. Thanks

I know you don't have to tip, but I will and don't want to leave anyone out. trying to budget for extras.

Yes, you will have a cabin steward. The butler takes care of you. The cabin steward takes care of the cabin. Your room service will be provided by your butler, so that's one thing you can cross off the list.

Lately in Luminae you seem to have one main waiter and assorted other people providing other things. Our bread guy noticed that we liked the brown bread from the main dining room and made sure we had a basket each evening. He got an extra tip. I don't tip the sommelier or the MC Concierge or the Maitre d' unless they provide some outstanding extra service. Last trip the sommelier was outstanding and she got an extra tip. The bar waiter in Michael's Club was not so he didn't.

The amount of the tip would depend on the length of your cruise and the service rendered by the individual. My suggestion would be to bring along enough money to provide extra tips to these people and then decide, based on the service you receive, whether or not to provide the extra tip. I always give extra tips to my butler, cabin steward, and waiter. The rest depend on the service received.

So, you SHOULD tip. But you gratuities can be pre paid to cover those you mentioned, in their normal duties.

A gratuity will be added to any beverage you order. That’s the minimum. You COULD stop there, we additionally tip for anything above and beyond. If breakfast is delivered to our stateroom, we tip $5. just coffee? A couple of dollars.

Setting up champagne in a bucket of ice? Tip again

Normal stuff like stateroom cleaning, we figure prepaid gratuities cover that.

Lots of different theories abound, like tip heavily in the beginning etc., We haven’t noticed tipping to change behavior, god bless them, they work hard no matter what.

We were in the Penthouse. And ... each of these individuals really did a LOT to make our cruise special !

 

We met the Luminae Maitre d a few years ago and always look forward to cruising with him again. He and many other crew members and officers always remember us.

Additional tipping should be dependent on the performance of each individual. On our last cruise:

- Our Butler did nothing, even when it was his duty. Ordered room service once, called him and he bounced us off to order from "room service" phone line direclty.

- Cabin Steward, we tipped him generously. He was great.

- Bartenders, we only went to Michael's and we tipped 2 bartenders there at the end of our cruise.

- Maitre 'D. None. He was friendly and nice and that was that.

- Assistant Maitre 'D. Yes, she was the one who sat us and took care of us.

- Waiter, we tipped him generously. He was great.

- Assistant waiter - we had 2 regulars and we tippped both of them.

- Sommelier, we did not tip him extra. He was just ok plus he received the tip from the wine package which we bought.

- MC Concierge. We don't personally care for him. He came across a bit cold, aloof maybe a better description. No additional tips.

- Room service. We tipped the person, who was not our butler, for the one time we orrdered room service.

That's certainly my understanding too, both on Celebrity and on other lines we've used. There's the occasional thread showing the distribution of gratuities by Celebrity, and I've yet to see one that makes any reference to those who provide room service.

We tip the cabin attendant, waiters, ass't waiters and head waiter (if we ever see them), room service and bartenders. Those are all the folks we "use".

For the OP's benefit, the Summit (which I believe they will be on) does not have the Murano specialty restaurant. Just the Tuscan Grille (a steak house with a touch of Italian mixed in), Qsine (a cute small plate restaurant with attractive, quirky presentations) and Sushi on Five.

We have always tipped our Butler, Stateroom Attendant, Luminea MD, Luminea Waiter, Bus Person, Wine Steward, MC Bartender and Michael's Club Concierge. The amount is dependent on whether they went above and beyond.

 

Having said that in talking to some to the staff in Luminea I was rather disappointed to find that our waiter who went above and beyond indicated that they pool all of the tips. He was very appreciative and said we could help him the most by mentioning his name in the survey.

 

The practice of having to pool the tips really left a sour taste in my mouth. We have always tipped heavier to a person that really made our vacation that more special.

 

What are others opinions of Pooled Tipping and will it affect the amount you choose to leave in the future.

As a warning, if you want to taste the beef, not the sauce, ask for it without sauce. Can’t taste the beef with the heavy sauce.

We've sailed in suites (RS, PH) on all of our Celebrity cruises and have always tipped the butlers and room stewards extra. They work hard to be sure that you enjoy every moment onboard and fully deserve it.

In dining we've tipped our main waiter, his ass't (earlier cruises there was one, last 2 cruises several people helped the waiter, we tipped the young man who did the bread every evening and there was another guy who helped serve sometimes at dinner, but always helped at breakfast in Luminae)

Also tipped the sommelier and the maître d'.

As far as Michaels Club, it became a suite lounge for our last two cruises. The first year the MC concierge was wonderful! She called everyday to see if we needed anything, if we had any special requests and made an appearance every night in Luminae to chat with the guests and see how their day was, she got tipped.

Our last cruise, barely ever saw or heard from the concierge (obviously not the same girl) so we felt there wasn't a need to tip her. MC's bartender got tipped as we stopped in there most nights prior to dinner.

Other bartenders: if we sat by the pool and had the same waiter serve us for most of the time, we'd tip him at the end of the day. Otherwise for a drink here or there at one of the bars we didn't leave an extra tip unless we stayed for a substantial amount of time.

Casino waiter got tipped at the end of the night.

Room service during the morning/day/early evening is delivered by the butler, but late night it would be someone else, so he/she would get a tip upon delivery.

We are from a country where tipping is NOT part of the culture and hence we always struggle to decide how much is appropriate to tip. Our currency is always behind US$ hence it is also the matter of “compromise” I.e. what is appropriate vs still reasonable in our currency. I do understand that some people tip very generously, others may not at all and this is personal choice (or could also be a matter of what one can afford). The reason we struggle is that we usually rely on guides for different countries to see what’s appropriate eg 10%, 15% of the bill etc. But there are no bills from waiters, stewards etc. Please, anybody, can you share how to decide what is appropriate?i do not want to offend a person I want to tip by giving too little , but also need to consider our means. Thank you in advance.
