Alaska Airlines is doing away with plastic straw stir sticks for their coffees. They are opting to clear cut trees and use wooden sticks.

Some wood comes from managed forests, grown for making paper etc. But yes, we should care about the environment.

NCL’s plastic straws are bad for the environment so they eliminate them, what about all those plastic drink cups?

Does anyone find it ironic that ncl ( because they are being mandated to do so) is eliminating plastic straws to save the environment and protect sea life....but....continues to build open space middle of the ship casinos where the smoke waifs into the decks above and below and into several eating areas?

 

Ok it's a rhetorical question and we know the real answers but please let's not pat ncl on the back with this drinking straw thing....straws do not bring in revenue plus ncl knows they must follow the rules set forth by who knows?

 

We all know that eventually ncl will again be the environmentally friendly hero when in the not to distant future they announce all their casinos are smoke free....of course this announcement will coincide with a mandate from somewhere as well

A lot of good points brought up by all. Enjoyment versus environment vs profit seem to be the basic responses. I may be more on the environmental side. Plastic appeared to be a good option when I was growing up in the 60’s. Plastic is now on an increased path and much more, on steroids for enjoyment and profit.

Weeeeell, here comes Europe to provide their take. You want to sell on your tours here, make it sustainable. So sorry USA, your non-USA cruise ships come here too. No one use plastic. Welcome to the world ecomony...and 7+ billion trash generators, some minor, some not...oops, there I go dogmatic again. We are not the same as when less of us had convenience. Everyone now has access to plastic. Time to give it up. And I’m sticking to it 🤨

You do realize their newest ship has either walled off or greatly diminished the smoking areas, right? Unless they've reversed course from the TA as i have not followed them closely since then.

 

 

Though it should be noted that choosing to stop polluting wildlife habitat is a bit different vs shutting down what we consider a sentient being's choice to smoke. (Personally I 100% am behind smoke free cruises.)

Btw I started posting that suggestion after my January 2015 breakaway cruise

 

I guess the ship design engineers were tired of being called casino design fools by the cruising public. Lol

Just returned from an Azamara cruise in the Mediterranean and they had plastic straws on board, so we didn't have to use the supply we carried with us. While staying in France, we saw a news report that a European wide ban on disposable plastics (straws, forks, knives, and spoons) is being proposed.

This is just a ridiculously cheap cost cutting move and could backfire by becoming the poster child for NCL nickel and diming.

98% of passengers would’t bother though, the same people who want to go through dozens of bottled water instead of just tap water, and those bottles get tossed too...

Most people wouldn’t bother. The same people who want to buy dozens of bottles of water rather than just drinking tap water.

Its happening on other lines as well.

Just off a Carnival cruise where pretty much straws were by request only. When being served a drink they would not serve you with a straw

Of course it is humans that are the problem, but like many other things, it is a very few that ruin it for others. After straws are banned by countries, cities, cruise ships, etc., just think of the other things that some folks refuse to dispose of properly, because they will be the next things to be banned.

also, newsflash. China is the largest buyer of US recycling. They arent interested in our recycling anymore. Recyling is piling up everywhere and it isnt getting recycled. Much of what we all dutifully place in our recycle bins is going into the trash.
