Velvetwater Posted July 29, 2018 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2018 Maybe it is just me but every time I sail from a non UK port I worry I will be denied boarding....the further away the port is the more I worry.Does anyone else get this feeling or is it just me? I have never committed a crime, I have had a passport since birth which always has a year plus on it before I sail and I always do staunch Visa checks for every single port and print out every document under the sun to do with this. I double and double check again all names match and passport/ticket things match etc My nervousness is at maximum atm as we are doing a Singapore to Australia cruise in 2 weeks or so and although I have doubled checked my flights, had my evisitor for Oz granted and checked it is accurate and my passport is all sorted and safe I feel tense. Argh.
Rare puppycanducruise Posted July 29, 2018 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2018 I'm a worrier too. Not so much worried about being denied boarding, but worrying about missing a flight, being bumped from a flight, the flight being late or our luggage not arriving. I check and double check passports, credit cards etc. I worry about the dog when we're away. I worry about the house (even though neighbours keep an eye on it, or my niece house sits). Worry, worry, worry. I feel your pain.
sail7seas Posted July 29, 2018 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2018 Sounds like you have checked all the boxes and are prepared. I understand your anxiety, to travel so far, spend so much money but you have carefully double checked yourself and should be fine. Travel safely and have a wonderful time. Bon Voyage

Velvetwater Posted July 29, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted July 29, 2018 OP, in your post you said 'we' but but didn't say you carefully checked the other person's documents? Haha thanks good point! Thankfully (?) I am the travel agent in my marriage so I do all of my husband's travel bits too. I keep his passport next to mine too. On the upside, we do not have children just yet so thats one less body to worry about.
Shorex Posted July 29, 2018 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2018 Denied boarding based on what? Invalid passports? No. Missing visas? No. Outstanding warrants? No. Forgot to get a flu shot? The cruise line doesn't care. If you have anxiety to the point that you can't enjoy the pre-cruise anticipation, I suggest some cognitive therapy. This is not a frivolous suggestion, your nameless fears can be easily resolved and your tension dissipated. And then you will be in control of your own emotions. And that's a great feeling. Thank you for your concern, I have had GAD since my late teens that comes and goes and manifests in all sorts of guises ...mainly health but other ways too. I dislike flying and this trip is part of my 'screw it Bex, you need to fly again you were safe before' mindset. :) Although I must say, I am still enjoying the cruise build up for sure. I have been shopping and researching and so forth with much excitement but I suppose my GAD sometimes screams at me 'Hey you..all this is going so well so have you worried yet about....'. JMorris271 Posted July 29, 2018 #9 Share Posted July 29, 2018 You might talk to you Dr. about your anxiety. There are meds that can mellow them out and allow you to enjoy your cruise more.
nascarcruiser Posted July 29, 2018 #10 Share Posted July 29, 2018 I get it. I also have anxiety issues. The medication's just left me feeling like I didn't care. People telling you to just be medicated or deal don't understand. You know you will be fine. You've checked and double checked and will do it several more times before you leave. Speaking from experience once you are are the ship the anxiety will disappear but you know that. Hang in there you will be fine. You are dealing with your anxiety just fine sounds like to me

Rare mom says Posted July 30, 2018 #12 Share Posted July 30, 2018 So was the whole point of your OP simply to vent? An outlet for your anxiety? Since you disclosed in a later post that you had been diagnosed with GAD many years ago, you must know that your current over reactions are simply a manifestation of your disorder. The previous suggestions of therapy (whether cognitive or pharmaceutical), on the recommendation of a qualified practitioner, are not out of line for someone with a long standing problem such as yours. I hope you can find some means to calm your fears. Prolonged elevated stress due to this anxiety can't be healthy.
Velvetwater Posted July 30, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted July 30, 2018 I have had various bits and bobs through my GP through the years but as Nascar pointed out, meds are not the way for all. Anxiety tends to leap on you now and again regardless of previous methods I have found out and common sense goes out the window as I am generally quite logical.I refuse to be dosed up on pills though (and my parents agreed with this wholeheartedly when I was 17). Some may see this is as silly but its different for everyone I guess.I suppose the post was a sharing/venting exercise but then again...many forum posts are and I am sure they don't all have my worries. Just got all the currencies today so only got a hair cut and dog check up to go (and packing of course) and we are all set. My husband just went to the Dentists due to tooth trouble and she thinks he will be ok for at least a month so thats one worry off my mind! Anxiety and such are disorders most people don't understand. We know the feeling we have is irrational but we wired differently so we can't just let it go at times. We have figured out how to cope in most cases but there are times the coping mechanism doesn't even help. Telling someone they shouldn't worry or just get over it makes it worse. Velvet you are doing the best you can and for that I applaud you

sykimball1498 Posted July 30, 2018 #16 Share Posted July 30, 2018 It's not just you. I'm always a nervous wreck until we hear the "DING!" We do everything that we are supposed to do, fly in a day or so early, have passports and all paperwork in order and it doesn't matter. I'm a nervous nelly from the time we leave our house until we are on the ship. It never fails.
JMorris271 Posted July 30, 2018 #17 Share Posted July 30, 2018 (edited) To all these Sudo Drs. out there. My suggestion is to ask her Dr. to determine what or does anything needs be done to help the OP with her feelings. No one should ever prescribe a treatment nor recommend no treatment except one that has made a study of HER case. Don't make medical decisions based on anyone's unqualified suggestion. Only she can decide if her feeling are a distraction and an appointment is needed. Edited July 30, 2018 by JMorris271
jocap Posted July 30, 2018 #18 Share Posted July 30, 2018 Yes, I worry about the major things, until we're safely on the aeroplane or ship...and the worst I've done is leave the deodorant in the hotel bathroom... easily fixed! You'll be absolutely fine...you're going to have a tremendous experience, and you'll love every minute...once you get on your way. Enjoy, and come back and tell us about it. xx :)

Rare Hlitner Posted July 31, 2018 #21 Share Posted July 31, 2018 Reading the OP's issue made me feel a bit sad for travelers who are possessed by many internal demons. DW and I are very frequent adventurous travelers. When on cruises (and we have been on more then 100 all over the world) we normally do our own thing at ports including using rental cars, trains, public buses and our feet. We meet many fellow cruisers who are literally afraid to leave the ship unless they are on an escorted tour. They worry about missing the ship, language barriers, getting lost, getting robbed, etc etc. When we do extensive driving trips throughout Europe we meet fellow Americans who are "amazed" that we would just fly (or take a repo cruise) to a European city, rent a car, and go off on our own. Over several decades we have met numerous travelers who tell us they fear doing things on their own. How sad. Years ago we used to try to reason with folks that there are huge personal rewards for those that do their own thing. But we finally realized that many of these folks simply cannot help themselves because they have internal demons that impact everything they do. Unfortunately, the modern cure for such demons are drugs, drugs and more drugs. Nobody can afford to take the time to help folks work through and conquer their demons. Just give them a Xanax, ****** or some other drug and let them get on with their life! Oh my. Hank
Velvetwater Posted July 31, 2018 Author #22 Share Posted July 31, 2018 . We meet many fellow cruisers who are literally afraid to leave the ship unless they are on an escorted tour. They worry about missing the ship, language barriers, getting lost, getting robbed, etc etc. Hank Thankfully, my anxiety doesn't extend to that issue. Although I would say that all cruisers wonder about missing the ship. My fear of flying raises its head quite a bit but I try and ignore it or book alternative travel across Europe and beyond. I have found that Europeans like myself are less likely to book an excursion for everything. We generally only do one per long cruise and even then its an experience rather than being talked at for many hours. Oh btw, for the person that mentioned pregnancy that is quite the real issue for me as I am 32 and my husband is 31 and we don't have kiddies yet. :) We are quite careful with that though.
