Silversea Water Cooler: Welcome! Part Five

We went out for two short hikes abou an hour from home.

 

One was in the Sloan Gorge Preserve. A nice stream (with spots covered with a thin sheet of ice), plenty of icicles, and a narrow squeeze called "the chimney" - all in all a nice hour-long hike.

A nice stone stepping path to keep our feet dry. It actually wasn't very wet, and we could do the hike in sneakers.

 

 

Another 20 minutes away, we hiked to the Ashokan quarry. Here they took stone which they needed to build the dam holding back the Ashokan reservoir (one of NY City's water sources). The view from the top of the cliff face was spectacular. The quarry was just below us but we didn't look down.

 

 

Below the quarry, railroad cars waited between these rock walls, and stone was loaded into them by gravity. Then it was a three mile trek to the dam.

The weather was great. I don't think the icicles will be there much longer.

 

 

We were starving when we got home so I took some leftover pork and made a meaty gravy. Chris fried some potatoes in the airfryer. Havarti stood in for cheese curds. It made for a hearty snack.

Going good!  Hope to hit -9.0% tomorrow on weigh-in day.  We’ll see though because today is going to be full of some great food, including a favorite carb of mine; poupon potatoes!  It’ll be the first time having russet potatoes since early January.  Can hardly wait!
