bbtbear Posted January 28, 2019 #1 Share Posted January 28, 2019 Just wondering if anyone locks their luggage, either before getting onto the ship or when leaving them outside your cabin on the last night? Are there any disadvantages to locking your luggage up?
FSHLOT Posted January 28, 2019 #2 Share Posted January 28, 2019 We never lock luggage. We also carry our own luggage off the ship. The only disadvantage i can think of is if they had to search your luggage for some reason. I'm sure they will show no mercy when it comes to opening your bag with a lock on it. Athankfulheart Posted January 28, 2019 #3 Share Posted January 28, 2019 They ask you not to lock your luggage when you check it on to the ship, but if they want it unlocked, they will leave a note in your cabin to come down to them and unlock the bag for them. No problem locking it when you check it off the ship.

If they are that desperate to steal my dirty underwear, than they will have to work for it.
Nic6318 Posted January 28, 2019 #5 Share Posted January 28, 2019 Hi It takes no effort at all for someone who is determined to steal. I do not lock my luggage when traveling. I do use the locks on the luggage once on the ship/ in hotel for larger souvenir type things. On the ship I my bag is usually stored under the bed. Nothing "valuable" is kept in luggage, they provide a safe for anything important.
Liverpoollovely Posted January 28, 2019 #6 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I always lock my case but I do where ever I travel I make sure I use TSA approved locks it is more of a habit than anything else
PhillyFan33579 Posted January 28, 2019 #7 Share Posted January 28, 2019 We always drop off luggage with porters on embarkation day and for cruises 7 days or longer we leave luggage outside the night before debarkation. We never lock any of our luggage and we have never had any issues.
Saturngrl Posted January 28, 2019 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I always use a TSA approved combination lock on my luggage.
riffatsea Posted January 28, 2019 #9 Share Posted January 28, 2019 We do not check luggage! We carry ours onto and off the ship ourselves! It is not difficult and then we don't have to wait or worry about it!
evandbob Posted January 28, 2019 #10 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I use the TSA locks for the few times I've checked my bag on airlines or given it to a porter at the seaport. Once, someone opened one of the two zippered outside pockets and used a box cutter blade to slash the inner lining (as well as cut my Tilley hat). Just because it's locked (and it doesn't take much to defeat that type of lock with a slender screwdriver or snap it open with power pliers) don't assume your belongings are safe from mischief.
Palmetto Pilot Posted January 28, 2019 #11 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I never lock it because locked luggage is a surefire way to get TSA to cut it.

We figured if we plan on using these for luggage on the plane, why not just keep the luggage locked on the ship
summersigh Posted January 28, 2019 #13 Share Posted January 28, 2019 When we drop the bags with the porter upon arrival we don't lock the bags. But when we put the luggage out the last evening to sit in the hall we use TSA approved combination locks to avoid someone strolling down the hallway from taking a quick peek. It may not actually make a difference but it makes me feel better 😀
skrufy Posted January 28, 2019 #14 Share Posted January 28, 2019 Never lock. There’s nothing worth stealing in it. Carry all valuables in carry on.

Rare Saint Greg Posted January 28, 2019 #17 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I don’t in case security needs to get into it. All valuables would be in my carryon.
Verde Man Posted January 28, 2019 #18 Share Posted January 28, 2019 We use a zip tie to lock ours. Just be sure to have a fingernail cutter to get the off.

I also carry on all my bags for the cruise, but for flying they get checked. I don't worry about anyone going through them..nobody wants a 51 year olds underwear and tshirts LOL

We have never locked luggage and have never had stolen.
shoptom Posted January 28, 2019 #21 Share Posted January 28, 2019 I use a lock simply to help identify which bag is mine.
