Eclipse disappointing compared to other recent Celebrity sailings

You see I would say to many people that’s exactly what it’s saying. If I stay at a hotel that describes itself as a “luxury hotel” I expect a “ Luxury Hotel”. Now I think it’s fair to say that the term is open to interpretation. I would also say with Edge they are paying 5 star prices at times, but that’s not the case with the other ships to a large degree. Don’t get me wrong some people are just a pain in the neck and want to find something to complain about, Injust think Celebrity are setting themselves up for a fall by still using the Luxury tag line when it’s clearly not.

Modern Luxury is just a Celebrity marketing term.  Yes it is a bit of a stretch.  Not all that meaningful in comparing cruise lines.  Most experienced cruise passengers would probably characterize Celebrity as mass-market premium.  Probably in the same category as Princess and HAL.  The true Luxury lines such as Crystal and Regent and Seabourn are smaller ships with much higher crew to passenger ratio and usually significantly more expensive.

Well, you see again I would argue that point and say it’s very meaningful. Don’t underestimate the impact using those words has on both cruisers who sailed in the good times, and new cruisers which the tag line captures. How many times on here is that term used to knock Celebrity, actually quite a bit. It’s not as meaningless as many would think it is.

Currently on the eclipse in an RS a few thoughts ship is in great shape as well as the suite.Faster Wi-Fi package included with a suite has been very good enough to look at some video like Hulu

We thought we would be escorted to Michael's club but instead it was a cattle call which took an hour to get on board. Sail away in sky lounge prior to 5 p.m. sail away told we could not get a drink until the ship sailed because they did not have a license to sell alcohol in Vancouver (What?) Luminae which was our favorite eatery on solstice has now been dumbed down so as to not offend any palette... A shame. Ordered a spicy bloody Mary in the  ensemble lounge bar to find they had no bloody Mary mix or Tabasco. Took a half hour and four tries to find a wine (over $100) they had in luminae on board....  to be continued

Good thing I didn't order Bloody Mary Gazpacho, it probably would have been ketchup soup.  BTW, OP is right about the French Union Soup.  Last night ours was basically cheese soup, with very little union, thin broth.  Our bread spread in Blu is already representative and uninspired compared to Infinity last October.  The last two nights we've had an unappetizing corn and beat spread.  What happened to the delicious garlic and pepper spread we're used to?  Probably out, and improvising.

I walked by an office going down the stairs, as he was coming up, made eye contact, and said hello.  My wife did the same, and he kept on walking, without as much of a head nod.  I've had officers walk by without greeting before, but never when engaged.

OMG! We are on this ship B2B starting 4/29 Hawaii/Alaska.  I sure hope they have their act together for our sailings.  This will be our 2nd time on Celebrity, having done our first as a TA last year.  To be honest, we didn't find anything special about Celebrity/Eclipse to make us dedicated to the line.  To late now to back out so, hopefully, things will be alright.

We are on the Alaska segment with you and I hate that I read this thread :). I hope they get it straightened out in the next couple of weeks. This will be our first Celebrity cruise coming up after cruising on many different lines. And I was looking forward to comparing Celebrity to the other lines we have sailed. We will have fun regardless. But the issues listed above are not minor IMO. Not being able to make a drink at a bar due to lack of resources is a real problem. I am not going on vacation to get drunk every night. But I do like a couple of well made cocktails every evening while on vacation. I kind of figured the ship would be a little beat up at this point. It has been a while since her last refurb. That Alaska segment wasnt cheap. In fact it is the most we have ever spent on a cruise in our lives. Celebrating our 25th on this cruise so I hope it lives up to the price we paid. We will find out in two weeks. 🙂

I agree with you both.

When I want velvet touch treatment, I stay at a 5 star, I pay for that luxury and I get it.

I, personally don’t expect and never have expected to get that same 5 star level from Celebrity and that would be regardless of what type stateroom I paid for.

Personally, for that reason we get a balcony room and save our suite budget for that vacation that can truly deliver the 5 star experience.

All of my Celebrity cruises have been wonderful.  Were they same as a 5 star comparison, no, however, I don’t expect that.

The reason I posted we are on Eclipse now is to hopefully give those on upcoming cruises some encouragement.  It bothers me when negative comments influence or cause concern as may put a damper on someones upcoming cruise. Our very first cruise many years ago, turned us off on cruising, as we were seated at a table with an older couple who had been on many cruises and all they did was compare and criticize..... we literally could not wait to escape them and will say did influence the time we had.  Of course we were a lot younger and that was before all the varied choices for restaurants .. knowing what we know now, would have simply asked to be moved.

Yes, things are not perfect .... will agree on the wine selection in MDR but will just have a chat with the sommelier and find something better, though did notice many people quite happy with what they were pouring, just not to my taste or maybe just more discriminating.  Did notice in Ocean View today at lunch, there were other labels, so must be other selections. We have not experienced being out of anything....DH ordered a Bloody Mary and no issue on that.  Staff have all been very friendly and attentive.  They work very hard and I am sure some suffer burn out, especially dealing with so many personalities.

This is the first time for us on Celebrity, so don’t remember the “good old days” and maybe that is for the better.  We take the attitude a new experience, things are always changing .... sometimes for the good .... sometimes not so good..... but is what you make of it. We choose to have a good time ...... attitude can made a huge difference.  😊

Can you explain the Azamara  Open Passage Certificate....

We plan to book several cruises and had asked if we could book Azamara on Celebrity. Was told yes--and yet the Celebrity future cruise folks may not know how to execute it all and the benefits etc (from Voyagers Club etc)

And I think you’re exactly the pax X are currently hoping to gain, together with those moving across from NCL and Carnival - lots of posts in recent months from both of these usual cruise lines’ pax posting they are trying X for the first time. Personally, I think you are the target audience and not the millennials that was originally thought. LLP knows this clientele from being at the helm during the years before crossing over from Royal - perfect mindset for providing their cruising wants and needs - that’s why there have been so many changes. At the same time, they are punching at the other end of the spectrum on increasing the amount of suites on each ship and so providing a ‘ship within a ship’ model to increase the customer’s experience and also X’s revenue more swiftly.

As you say, why worry about their usual baseline clients and the ‘good old days’ - food for thought?

We were also on the Pacific Coastal cruise -- which was the last leg of a B2B2B.  We boarded the ship in Buenos Aires and left in Vancouver.

We were in the same Aqua stateroom all three legs, and the condition of our stateroom was great.

Obviously, Blu was our "MDR."  On all three legs we thought that the Blu operation was "off."  We had no issues with the individual waitstaff, but wonder what was happening.  We didn't make it to breakfast in Blu much during the three legs, but one of the few times we did service was extremely slow and it took so long to have the juice server come into our section (which was not empty).   Another passenger, who had been in Aqua on the Eclipse earlier this year, observed of the same problems and told me that the service issues we observed didn't happen on her earlier cruises -- she seemed to be of the opinion that something changed during the six or so week interval when she was off the ship.  We also spoke to the maitre 'd about service on one occasion.

We also had the premium beverage package (which comes with our loyalty level) and were severed some rather basic wines in Blu.  Only one time of the three cruises did the sommelier offer something unusual -- and my husband had made it clear to both sommeliers that we like to try a variety of wines.    On the March 24th cruise another Zenith, who was in a CS, told me they were having issues getting Decoy in Luminae also so.  But we did enjoy nice wines both in Michael's Club and Cellar Masters.

Our internet reception was good in our stateroom.  But yet another Zenith was having issues in their stateroom, and also in Michael's Club.

We didn't notice some of the shortages mentioned by others, but certainly on the South American cruises berries were in short supply.  Apparently there were some concerns about E.coli on certain produce coming out of SA.

All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our time on board.

Eugene at the Future Cruise Desk followed through, we're just waiting for the receipt.  They have fliers for Azamara and shouldn't have a problem booking a specific cruise, which I was told you're allowed to change once, but you may have to be persistent for an Open Passage Certificate.

We paid $275 each as a 50% off deposit, which is non-refundable, yet never expires.  Still Classic, we'll receive 4% off the future cruise fare, plus $200 OBC.  We can choose any cruise moving forward, which combines with the current promos at that time, and is cc'd to your TA.

We chose this route because we've already got plans through 2021, and Azamara may not offer what we're looking for within a specific year.  This year, they had an excellent price on a multi day SC + Bermuda cruise, and Transpacific cruise, but it may take a couple years for something similar to be released again.

I'm certainly against trying to ruin other passenger's cruise experience onboard, but this is cruisecritic, where it is the precise place to express these concerns.  If we all wait until the end of the Alaskan season, there will always be upcoming cruisers, who will be just as disappointed to read this in August.

Personally, I have only discussed the lukewarm Oceanview Cafe with others during lunch, in the MDR, who are there for the same reason.  The couple we ate with today were excited to book Edge, expressed that the MDR was too big and loud, and were thrilled to learn that Edge has 4 separate and more intimate dining rooms.  We can be critical privately, and still join in other's enthusiasm.

I don't think there's any reason for people to be apprehensive about sailing Eclipse.  The passengers are happy, most of the crew is friendly, we're on a nice ship, comfy beds, with most of the food in the dining room being decent.  I've been on a bad cruise, this isn't it.  However if you've sailed X within the last year, you'll no doubt noticed a few letdowns.  Take it for what it is.

Update: 3rd night of the bread spreads being mashed up corn, beats, or peas...  Blu seems more understaffed than Infinity was in October, but the crew is doing their best.

I always remember our early days of cruising where you could always find some pax at a dining table who spent the whole time moaning, one afternoon tea on the QM2 two elderly ladies moaned  the whole time that it was not a patch in the original Queen Mary and QE2. Standard have dropped without a doubt but I would not spend thousands to then moan about the ship the whole time I was on it. When we feel like that it’s time for us to move on to something else. We work 6 days a week and i’m going to enjoy my time off work.

This thread just speaks to the inconsistency that celebrity has become know for.  We've experienced some of all of the issues mentioned, plus probably a few more....and then on our next cruise, it's wonderful.  As much as I find it hard to believe, I think the captain really has something to do with the entire attitude of the ship.  Our best cruises, for whatever reason, have been with personable captains who walk around the ship talking with folks, looking around.  The worst, captain's that essentially hide...and yes there are a few.

It's obvious that Celebrity is trying to cut costs....it's really hard to run out of smoked salmon, etc....unless you order the absolute minimum you might need.  Similar on fresh vegetables like asparagus.  If you are in HQ and measured on cost savings, you order less....and if anyone complains, there's really no one in HQ that ever passes that complaint on...and the ship just covers as best they can.  In fairness, the sip gets whatever HQ ordered...they have no real control, so if they don't have salmon, they cover.  The cuts in liquor...ditto....don't carry more expensive bourbons, they just cost money...eat away at premium package profits.

Cruising today is not the same as cruising even 3 or 4 years ago.  We are experiencing the race to the bottom.....as long as the ships are full, I guess it's a great business model.  Irrespective, I still think that Celebrity is the best of the mass market cruise lines....but Princess is hard on Celebrity's heels.  At least we don't have pay toilets in the cabins..but it's coming.  Don't worry, there will be a toilet package offering 🙂

I read this and thought wow GH must have been sailing with us, this really summarizes our experiences.  It is amazing how the friendly Captain and Senior Staff correlate with our best cruises.  For some reason it seems like the crew on those ships is just happier and that results in better service to all passengers.  Our best experience was with Captain Leo and a tall, thin German woman as hotel director.  They were everywhere on the ship and always having a friendly discussion with someone.  Not just passengers but other crew as well.  As an example during one of my morning walks I saw the Hotel Director stop and talk with the crewman maintaining the lawn on the top deck.  They talked long enough for me to do a couple laps and it looked like they were long lost friends.

But I do see cost cutting down to most minute level to cut costs.  Last February on the Silhouette we were doing a 9 and 12 day B2B.  For breakfast my wife enjoys a half-bagel with peanut butter, blueberries and some other topping.  There were 4 blueberries on each bagel until day 7 when it was reduced to 2 blueberries and they ran out on day 8.  On the 12 day there were only 3 blueberries on the bagel until day 10 when it was dropped to 2 blueberries and they ran out on day 11.  It is almost comical that someone is tracking cost and supplies down to the individual blueberry.  It appeared that they order the same amount of blueberries for each trip and ration them accordingly.

For the long-time cruiser it's obvious that there have been cuts  in almost every area to reduce costs.  After a while there is very little that seems to wow us on any cruise, we always seem to find ways to enjoy ourselves.  We either go to experience a ne itinerary in a different part of the world or we just go to enjoy the Caribbean during the winter.   We don't expect the onboard experience to be the highlight of the trip, just take us to these places so we can enjoy ourselves.  If I describe the cruising experience to someone that has never cruised on Celebrity I always try to temper the modern luxury expectation.  I tell everyone that they should not expect a 5-star luxury hotel experience and it is closer to the Holiday Inn.  All of my needs are met at a Holiday Inn but I'm not pampered and no one is going the extra mile to serve me.   This isn't a complaint, just a summary of the current status.

I must admit good wine is wasted on me. Went to a wine tasting class on Cunard 12 years ago. After tasting each they asked us which was our favourite red and white and which did we dislike the most. The red bottom of my list was an Opus one which if I remember right they said was the most expensive I had tried. I likes the one a third of the price.

Very good analysis...Celebrity has been "Royalized"  ( LLP...mission accomplished)   It is now attracting customers crossing over from Royal C, NCL and Carnival..  Celeb is no longer  a special niche smaller cruise line a level.or two above them,  .but we are still sticking with it..

hcat- I don't quite agree that Celebrity has been Royalized entirely.  I have recently sailed RCCL in fact back to back in January (Harmony and Edge).  In my cruise history you will see in my earlier days I sailed RCCL a lot especially when my kids were younger. The Celebrity experience is still a notch above RCCL IMO.  If anything RCCL is coming up more in service to meet Celebrity standards than the other way around.  But it is still a comparison of family-oriented amusement park cruise vs adult-oriented quieter cruise.  Celebrity suits my needs at this stage in my life (recently retired early) particularly for non-Caribbean destination type cruises.

As for the loud music, if you can’t talk to the person next to you or carry on a conversation, there is a problem.  A few months ago we were on Reflection and I had to go to Guest Relations. The DJ had arrived in the Atrium.  I had been speaking to the girl at the desk and had to start shouting.  When she spoke I COULD NOT hear her.  We had finished and between songs I asked why it had to be so loud.  She said that “they like the upbeat vibe through the ship”.  Really?

On Eclipse and really loud music is not an issue.  Much prefer music than listening to multiple conversations going on around us, actually the music rather helps. We have not had any issues with not being able to carry on conversations  and have had very nice conversations with other passengers next to us.

Well said.

I have learned a lot from cruise critic and does help guide me in many areas.  But when one has booked a cruise and then start hearing all that is wrong can take the enthusiasm out some and cause concern.  I do like knowing things that I can change or be aware of and make for a more enjoyable cruise. Most all of us are excited about our upcoming cruises. Things change , some we can control others we cannot, things I may like, you may not ..... glad we have choices.

We have a friend who is a real wine ‘expert’, does tasting holidays, courses etc. Whenever he comes to dine with us he will bring along a really expensive wine and tell us all its merits...Whilst I find all of them fine I find I am often struggling to identify ‘the hint of grapefruit’ or the ‘aroma of blackberries’ he is telling me about....Truth be told, I have often enjoyed some of my ‘deal of the week’ wines from Asda more!!

After saying that our last cruise on Eclipse was really enhanced by the sommeliers in both Murano’s and Tuscan. We were in a RS so dined in one or the other most nights. On our first visit to each we described the types of wines we liked but then simply asked them to pair wines to our choices of starters and mains. The Tuscan sommelier was very good, the Murano one was outstanding....He really took pride in extending our experiences.  He would bring his recommendations over and pour us a tasting and if we ‘dithered’ the glass would disappear and he would encourage us to try another....

Just hope when we get on Equinox in September we get as good service.

Tonight after chat with sommelier in MDR she suggested a French Chardonnay which was quite good and DH had a Chianti which was quite good ..... sorry don’t remember the labels (though with Chianti ask for a label with a roster).... but easy solution.

Folks - just got on the eclipse a couple hours ago in Honolulu,  and figured I'd report back.   Observations so far:

Absolutely stunning ship.  Crew seems nice,  many nice greetings.  AQ room has nice balcony with footstools.  Buffet was fine, well laid out,  choices were just ok in my book.

The two concerns I've seen so far:  1) for whatever reason my go best promotion doesnt seem to have registered properly,  so we are spending too much time at guest relations 2) I'm reference to above notes about things running out- i ordered a mai tai (we ARE in Hawaii!) and the server came back with them and mumbles something about no more pineapple juice.   i ran into him again and he said something about "we may get some more,  we may not".  A little weird, and I'm hoping it's not a sign of things to come in terms of availability based on what has been previously mentioned.

So - based on everything mentioned above, i'd grade it a B- with a lot of upward potential if things go well.

We were on this cruise, and I have to agree with the OP.  We have sailed Celebrity many times and became Elite Plus at the end of this cruise.  Our loyalty has been broken by our experiences on this cruise. Running out of, or never having basic items, bartenders who could not make simple cocktails. And many more duck nipples.

Will be canceling our upcoming 15 day R/T LA/Hawaii on Eclipse. And, will have to rethink any future Celebrity cruise. Don't know if it is a money thing, poor management thing, there was a lot of crew replacement on this cruise, but that would be a poor excuse.

We are saddened and sickened, but for the money spent I have to believe there are better choices to be made.

I would say that everything starts and ends with management and leadership - definite decline in this Brand.
