They were all very neatly dressed wearing decent shirts along with shorts. (both Caribbean cruises). We alway sat near the entrance door so I could see everyone entering. It's not a matter of either group winning but allowing everyone to enjoy their vacation dressed decently in the DR for an evening meal. On our recent trip on the Crown there may have been as many a 2 dozen people with shorts on casual evenings & once seated you would never have noticed anything different. I specifically asked about the shorts & was told that although the company policy indicated that they weren't allowed the management had made the decision to allow them since many people chose to do so. It's funny how so many posters think Formal Nights are about the MDR. The Formal Nights are about selling portrait photos. You can't get out of an elevator without tripping over photog equipment or being blocked by people waiting for their formal portraits. That said, I will dress in nicer clothes on Formal Night. I enjoy seeing the families posing for their family portraits or the couples posing in their finery. To each their own.

That's fine with me as long as Princess doesn't force us to participate in dressing formally to enjoy the DR. For us, the days of getting excited about family portraits, wine pouring & purchasing wine for dinner have lost it luster.

I have photos that I paid a fortune for and have no idea where they are. I guess someone will come across them after I'm dead. With technology of today's cell phone photos and cloud storage I don't even own a camera anymore. I snap a picture and in an instant it gets stored on my computer at home. Most of my childhood photos were taken with a Kodak Instamatic camera. The resolution using a cell phone is much better.

I have never noticed more than one photo group, sometimes outside the casino and sometimes near the elevators. Now one is forced or coerced. The people who are having their photo taken, usually want to be there and have dressed up especially for this reason. It may not appeal to you or to me, but this is their cruise too. I no longer dress in Formal wear, but my DH and I try to wear our 'Sunday Best' or eat in the buffet, if we truly want to wear 'beach' clothes.

I don't really drink, so I usually get an "Arnold Palmer" My spouse will usually buy wine or a cocktail. Princess doesn't not have Sommeliers, so we need to know our wines, rather than having a wait person try to "steer" us to a ship recommended wine. We usually bring out own to the DR as we dislike all of Princess's dry wines. We've even given up on attending the free wine tasting as they never have anything we like. Why would you expect a cruise with 3x as many passengers at half the cost to measure up? It simply won't. Some people choose cruises for the ship, some for the destinations. I can guarantee you Princess will disappoint if you are expecting an Oceania experience.

Rare mizLORInj Posted November 9, 2019 #134 Share Posted November 9, 2019 Haven't been on Princess since 2011, but i'm glad to see that formal is no longer what the majority are doing. We used to bring the tux and cocktail dress in the 00s but now we try to pack less and travel lighter. Those items were the first to start being left at home. I realize many like to dress up and get photos taken, and it's great the opportunity to do so is available. Happy cruising everyone!
rlk2018 Posted November 9, 2019 #135 Share Posted November 9, 2019 (edited) On a cruise last year we had brought our family. One standard answer for the photographer cluster was we could honestly say we had our own with us. Now have you ever been published in Natl. Geo? One son has so we weren't kidding. I only had to tell the flock one time and they left us alone. Edited November 9, 2019 by rlk2018 typo

No judgement here... DON"T judge this!!! I have always worn a tuxedo on formal nights. I bought one just for cruises. We are going on a South Pacific cruise soon and I'm getting a white dinner jacket to fit in the warmer temperature. Formal wear makes great pictures and memories. We love and treasure the pictures of us in formal wear on cruises. It reminds of of the wonderful time we had spending the money we saved to have a good time on vacation. I have plenty of pictures of all of us in daily dress. We like a special vacation to have special memories and pictures. It's a lot of fun to "dress up" and feel like you own the boat once in a while. I'll smile at you in the MDR ... give me a smile back!! I had to double check that my husband didn't post this😁 On 11/2/2019 at 2:48 AM, MissP22 said: So now we all know just how much credibility to give your posts in the future. Happy sailing. Mike45LC Posted November 12, 2019 #140 Share Posted November 12, 2019 "If you wanted to keep your uniform sharp and straight then you would attach braces to the base of the shirt which would then hook on to pulled up socks under your trousers keeping the shirt pulled down and sharp." I keep a set of braces for this very purpose in the storage box with my cummerbunds, bow ties and shirt studs. Braces are very effective at keeping the shirt looking good. But where do you keep the storage box with your cummerbunds, bow ties and shirt studs. I have the same inventory (braces included) but darned if I know where it is.... HOPEFULLY not at goodwill with my tie dye. It will all come back into style SOMEDAY lol.

Hubby keeps that all in the closet. Easy to pack for a cruise. My 16 YO also has a tuxn(I'm sure he will need a larger one next year) , but the 11 year old only wears suits and vests (he has one jacket that fits each year, the beauty of hand me downs). All 3 also have vests they use sometimes instead of the cummerbund. We've worried before that we've given something away to Goodwill that we wanted, but this year, just check, we are all good :)

My storage box is normally on the top shelf in my closet, but right now, it is still on the closet floor, not having been returned to the top shelf after our last cruise (just got off the ship a few days ago). At the last minute, I decided to take the tux on the last cruise, since I didn't have to fly.

But this time I decided to see if it would stop them every night at dinner or time we disembarked and the re-boarded. It worked and we had a nice vacation.
