If she is being flagged in China and deployed to the China Market, I would expect her to refit at a Chinese yard. However, Chinese yards don't have much cruise ship experience, so they may use a yard in Singapore. Recently Sea Princess & Sun Princess was converted to "Charming" and "Pacific World" at China shipyards. Carnival Fascination is also heading to China now for the conversion to her new identity. Singapore shipyards would definitely be better for any refit, but I believe China yards also has the ability to handle cruise ships nowadays. Affirmative, I was aware that Chinese yards are desperately trying to get into the cruise industry. My biggest concern is quality of finishing and access to the multitude of 3rd party trades. When running a local shipyard, we avoided China parts, wherever possible. I also note, our local private ferry operator, recently built their new tonnage hulls in China, but towed them back to the West Coast to complete fitting out in their own shipyard. We can never match China on price for welding and fitting, but we certainly provide vastly superior quality finishing. In 2015 we suffered 104 nights on Sea Princess, as she already resembled a Greek tramp ship. Hopefully post refit in China, the ship won't be in any worse condition.😀 Before I retired, I reviewed the challenges of sending 2 of our ships to Singapore or Europe for major refits. China was never in consideration, may have been closer and cheaper, but quality and reliabilty were prime concerns.

If you choose to use the lower cost products, then obviously you will have to sacrifice for its quality. I am worried about the future of Viking Sun and how her interior design is modified... Heidi13 Posted February 19, 2021 #431 Share Posted February 19, 2021 Viking Sun is currently at anchor in Singapore Roads taking bunkers, so it is unlikely she is heading to a Singapore yard. Suspect tomorrow we will see the AIS with a destination in China.
Heidi13 Posted February 20, 2021 #432 Share Posted February 20, 2021 Viking Sun has loaded bunkers and has already departed Singapore, bound for Manila. Best guess is she will pay-off some local crew members rather than having to fly them home.

Or put a rock on the throttle and aim her in the general direction of china? 😂

Haven't heard from anyone on the ship since they departed Skagen, so not sure if any Chinese are already aboard for the familiarisation process. Dukefan Posted February 23, 2021 Author #438 Share Posted February 23, 2021 Viking Sun now headed for Shanghai, China and due to arrive on the 25th. I wonder if there will be a name change? Probably I guess.

I believe the identifier for Shanghai is SHG, so they could have a typo in the destination

Shekou (near Hong Kong, or near Shenzhen in China) is commonly written as SHK. Definitely she is going to Shekou. It is impossible to arrive Shanghai in just one day. She is listed on Hong Kong Marine Department arrivals report for tomorrow morning. I guess she will pass through Hong Kong waters before arriving at Shekou. Jim Avery Posted February 24, 2021 #449 Share Posted February 24, 2021 Does anyone know the name the joint venture will operate under? I only find links to their ferry ops. If they have a cruise website up I bet there are renderings of the new Chinese interior, including the 200,000 sq ft Casino.....😱

Govt owned and big players in ports and cargo shipping. Moving into pax shipping in a JV seems a logical progression. Sadly, to appeal to the Chinese market, the ship will look nothing like it does today. You may have under-estimated the casino size, I'm thinking the entire atrium, wintergarden, Explorers Dk 8, and in addition hundreds of 1-arm bandits in every stairwell, just like the old ships had.😀 1
