Royal Caribbean May Need Volunteers for Trial Cruises

 Share

Recommended Posts

If Royal Caribbean International wants to cruise out a U.S. homeport anytime soon, it will need a permit from the CDC as part of the new Conditional Framework the agency has issued.

That will include the company having a number of trial cruises using employees and volunteers as stand-in passengers to test safety and health protocols.

“We are going to be doing a series of sailings using our employees and other volunteers to test out the protocols and make modifications," sadi Vicki Freed, senior vice president of sales and trade support and service, on a webinar on Wednesday.

Freed said the company will be looking for volunteers, but hasn't quite yet worked on the details.

She said that the first cruises to be offered in 2021 may be short sailings to CocoCay, which would allow the company to operate in a bubble on its own private island.

Industry sources expect the Mariner and Navigator of the Seas, the company's recently-refurbished "short Caribbean" ships, to be the vessels pressed into service.

“It is going to require a lot of work to restart operations," Freed said. "It is complicated to go through this entire CDC recommendation and we are going to do it.”

They should have us casino cruisers as the volunteers. Then they can make money, while we play in the casino!!

Yeah, that’s a good idea. Offer it to Casino Royale members and make them agree to spend at least $1000 in the casino.

Let's not get too excited here.

1.  It's not the whole fleet that will be involved.  Maybe one or two ships

2.  They will start with employees

3.  Volunteers will have to be in near perfect health.

4.  There will be no guarantees that the ships will return on a certain date.

5.  IF they ask for public volunteers, the numbers will be small.

Yes, there are few wonderful experiences in life that include the phrase "looking for volunteers" and "trial run" in them.

Can you imagine the waiver you'll have to sign if they do have public volunteers.

Point 4 is something I hadn't even thought of @yogimax but is at least a possibility.

Who says the ship will go anywhere? They could do a lot of the testing of process at the pier. Quantum is spending a lot of time docked.

The current CDC requirement is to "test" each itinerary before allowing paying passengers.  It looks like they will start with 2 ships doing 3/4 night cruises.  They will then need to do 7 night test runs before getting those online.  This could change at some point.  As part of the tests they will be looking at how they interact with each port.  If this policy stays in place they would need to run tests with each itinerary as they expand beyond Florida.  If they are to have an Alaska season, the logistics of shoreside facilities becomes more of a challenge to finds backup facilities in remote areas.  That could end up being a ship standing by as a backup in case of an outbreak.

I would consider volunteering for an Alaska test if available.

Wearing a mask on a ship you can barely (if at all) get off of doesn't sound like an "adventure".

Sounds like a Judge's sentence.

Judge:  "I sentence you to solidarity confinement no less than 3 days confined to a ship. At all times you must wear a mask, social distance, use the stairs and drink through a paper straw. You will not be allowed to partake in any shore excursion not offered by the ship. Even then you must fall into a single file line and follow the leader. Testing for Covid will be done prior to embarking & disembarking. If you test positive after the ship sets sail, you will assume the role of sea food for the ocean. Do I make myself clear? Are there any questions?"

Me: "Yes your honor I do have a question. Do I get Crown & Anchor  points?"

Jusge: "Bailey, take him away"

LOL 🙂  I'll just stay ashore and take probation.
