How much do you drink while cruising?

Recently off the Apex.   Now back at home my wife and I were out for dinner and I was enjoying a glass of red wine with my steak.   I reflexly looked over my shoulder for the sommelier to come and refill my glass when I realized that there wasn't a sommelier and that a refill would cost me $15 and so I refrained.

This got me to thinking about how much do people drink onboard especially with the included beverage packages.   Typically I would have something by the pool in the afternoon (a beer or margarita).   We would have a cocktail before dinner at Eden or Martini Bar (for me a whisky on the rocks) and then a glass or two of wine with dinner.   So essentially 4 alcoholic drinks per day.

So how much do you guys drink while cruising?   Am I about average?

Well, I certainly drink more when I cruise!  At home, I might have a glass of something a couple of nights a week.  On a cruise, I will probably drink something every day.  Hubby might actually go through a bottle of wine in one night and on other nights 2-3 drinks.  However, on the last few NCL cruises, I have not opted for the drink package, because the taxes on the drinks (since you have to buy the entire cruise worth for every person!) actually came out to more than I would spend buying drinks individually.  I learned my lesson to make sure what I am paying is worth what I plan to partake!

We did opt for the Drinks and more package on our upcoming X cruise, but my understanding is that package is no longer available.  Went for it because hubby likes some of the higher end stuff and I liked the $50 casino cash!

I’m about the same. A martini or two before dinner plus a glass of wine or two at dinner. If I’m going crazy might have a margarita or pina colada by the pool. More than I drink at home but certainly not enough to make the drink package worthwhile if I had to pay full price.

Alcohol wise- at sea days - Late morning I have 1 or 2 Bucks fizz/Mimosa ( depending if from US or UK) & husband will have a beer - in the afternoon a cocktail -  husband the same or bombay sapphire G & T. At dinner I have a couple of glasses of wine & husband more G & T. After dinner we will have 1 or 2 cocktails/ Martini's .

Add to that 2 or 3 speciality coffees a day , couple of soft drinks & some premium water & I think we get our monies worth. At home I probably have a couple of glasses a wine twice a week - husband maybe a beer or G & T. We def drink alot more on holiday than if we were at home ...but that's what holidays are for 🤣

Average prolly one drink a day, usually a wine with dinner. I'll buy a bottle which lasts a few meals.

A recent MSC cruise included a basic drink package which I upgraded for E10/day to get a better selection and included coffee and water as you have to pay for bottled water on MSC, even for dinner. The coffee inclusion was a bonus to me as the coffee was better than on any of my other cruises - Celebrity, HAL, RCI, Princess and Carnival. As well as wine with meals I would have a few pre dinner cocktails which saw my average go from one a day to three.

For me drink packages are generally not worth paying extra.

Hmmm…I prefer not to quantify it. Let’s say I get my money’s worth when vacationing. 🤣

I’ll preface this with we always upgrade to the premium package.

In all seriousness, we enjoy specialty coffees in the morning (and after dinner), followed by mimosas.  I enjoy cocktails throughout the day poolside, while hubby samples different beers, adding bottled water in the mix.

We hit the martini bar for pre dinner cocktail(s).

I typically enjoy 1-2 glass(es) of wine with dinner and hubby beer(s).  We both often enjoy either a desert wine or specialty coffee after our meal.

We carry on into the evening with our drink(s) of choice, and this is where the accuracy of the calculation ends. Not because we are inappropriately inebriated. We simply don’t count, we are on vacation and it varies by evening.

This is funny.  How much I or anyone else drinks is irrelevant.  Your "average" vs anyone else does not matter.  Never really gave one second of thought to how much any else drinks on board.

What’s so nice with the AI or a package, is you don’t ‘see’ how many you drank on the cruise when you get your final bill! Ha!

I do remember when we did a Cruise West SF Bay Wine Tasting, back when it existed. We docked in some marina overnight. In the mornings, we’d bus over to a Napa winery for a tour and tastings. The tastings could begin before 10am or so! Then back on board, we’d cruise SF Bay all evening and a sommelier would be aboard and more wine tastings.

We get back home, and we are about to have breakfast before we went to work, and I turned to my wife and asked, “where is my glass of wine?”…..she gave me ‘The Look’ and told me, “It Stops Now!”.

I rarely drink at home although reading this post makes me want a drink right now. But on a cruise I make up for not drinking at home. I cruise with my best friend and our husbands stay home. I drink around 8 or so each day.

Finally, someone Diogenes would be proud of on this thread.

Did you cruise on Celebrity back when they started the drink package? At that time your printout, or TV showed the drinks you had and where, but with a 0 charge.

Two or three a day, only because they’re free, being Elite Plus. It’s usually the same stuff I drink at home, been practicing for over fifty years and no what I like. This is more than I normally have. Drinking does nothing to enhance whatever I’m doing so why waste the money? Just my opinion.

I do find it odd when people write-up trip reports and state that on a particular day it seems they had too much to drink and didn't feel good, or had to sleep it off, or whatever. Then they go ahead and do the same thing over, and over, and over literally every day of their cruise. What is the fun in that? I don't get it.
