Will Royal Caribbean Ban a Popular Bad Habit, Add Unpopular Fee? - TheStreet o.k., I'll pose the ethical question... We all know that smoking (including breathing in second hand smoke) is harmful to health and lowers life expectancy. RCCL has made the decision to put financial gain over the health of its customers and casino employees. To me, the decision should be based on more than just the bottom line and yes, I'm a shareholder. 11 1

cruisegirl1 Posted July 1, 2022 #15 Share Posted July 1, 2022 (edited) Many land-based casinos have no smoking. They seem pretty crowded to me. I wish Royal Caribbean would flip the smoking/non-smoking sections on some of the smaller ships. The smoking section is just a couple of rows in the casino and the other 75% is smoking. loman Posted July 1, 2022 #17 Share Posted July 1, 2022 On oasis class ships they do try to differentiate between smoking and non smoking side. On the smoking side they keep it under a negative pressure by exhausting more air than the fresh air that is introduced and keep the non smoking area in a positive pressure by bringing in more fresh air than they exhaust. This is how its done in commercial buildings so i would think the same technology applies. Its not perfect as you get some cross contamination of air but it helps. The sacrificial area on Oasis is the casino bar, which is between the two. We skipped it many nights because the smoke smell was too much for us. mac_tlc

mo&fran Posted July 1, 2022 #21 Share Posted July 1, 2022 If you ban smoking in the casino, smokers will choose a cruise line that does. RCG gives you the option of cruising Celebrity, so chasing the smokers away from RCI too will have a negative impact on the CEO's future.

BND Posted July 1, 2022 #23 Share Posted July 1, 2022 (edited) As I said, eventually it will take care of itself. Current smoking has declined from 20.9% (nearly 21 of every 100 adults) in 2005 to 12.5% (12.5 of every 100 adults) in 2020. This is from the CDC. So, of every 100 people on a cruise at most there are 12.5 that smoke which is down from 21 just 15 years prior. That's a pretty large reduction, about a 40% reduction and that was as of two years ago. It's consistently dropped for years. F27TW Posted July 1, 2022 #25 Share Posted July 1, 2022 Smokers are more valuable in the casino. They need the smokers in there. They drink more and gamble more and stay longer than the tea-totaller non smokers do. 😁 1
