Good Sunday, everyone,

I've never been to Haines, but have fond memories of some stops in Skagway, especially the very first one with my mother.  Thanks for all the pictures that make me smile.

I used to love reading the Mrs. Murphy series.  Those would make some good travel reading, I'll look into them for the upcoming cruise.

I hope those of you - and friends and family - dealing with Covid have mild cases.  I'll be lining up the next time it's my opportunity for a vaccine.  I used to have some aversion to needles.  These past couple of years, I seem to be getting over that!

School starts here in early August, and I think they get out soon after Memorial Day.  The specific dates vary by district, but all in the same general time frame.

@kazu best of luck as you and Shadow get used to each other and come to agreement on who is Alpha.

We leave tomorrow (yea!) for 10 days in the hills of North Georgia of DS and DDIL.  It looks as if it is going to be much cooler than Oklahoma, so there's an added plus.

My best~~

 My very best friend growing up lost her husband last weekend and it really hit home.  We were each other's honor attendants (her only and my first wedding) and even tho we don't communicate as much as we should, we can pick right up just like miles and years have melted away.

I am so sorry to hear your sad news 😢 My deep condolences to your friend & her family and to you and prayers 🙏🏻

Jacqui, I'm sorry you had a set back with Shadow, but I'm not surprised after her international travels.  Hopefully, over time, she will come to realize being in the crate will only be for a short time and that you will return.  Time, patience and bottles of wine will be needed while gaining Shadow's trust.

Thanks - the crate is gone - she was spread out so there was no way I could get her in.  I’ll use an exercise kennel for her instead and pray for no accidents 😉. I doubt she will ever go in one - at least not for many months.

We're just about packed for our cruise on Wednesday....have to do the Covid at home testing on Monday, then flying to Boston Wednesday morning to join the Nieuw Statendam for 24 days!

How exciting!  Good luck with the covid test and safe travels.  Hope you have a wonderful cruise 🙂

Oh my what a beautiful day with ever ending beauty. Tonight after a day of the Highlands, Ben Nevis, Eilean Donan Castle we are staying in Skye. Had some minor itinerary changes due to ferry schedule changes. No problem as it was a full day of Kodak moments. Headed for dinner soon as is always a delight.

The white building is our lodging with gorgeous loch views.

Thanks for the report and postings.

Good afternoon. Thanks for the Fleet Report/Daily.

Mutts can be wonderful pets, although I've never had a dog. I like avocado but don't buy them much. I love icy cold watermelon on a hot summer day. Interesting quote.

I like carbonara but it's too carby. The drink sounds good. Pass on the wine.

On my only trip to Alaska, we couldn't dock at Haines, although the Captain tried. I was disappointed as we were to go from there to Skagway to do the White Pass Train and didn't make it. Thanks for the photos.

It's cloudy out, but humid. We may get rain this afternoon. So I got out and mowed the lawn, since the grass had grown a bit from recent rain. I was dripping wet doing it. Laundry this afternoon. The roofing guy came yesterday. He looked at the damaged 3rd floor plaster area and went into the attic as well. He was by himself, but went up on a tall ladder outside. There were several shingles missing right where the leak was. We'd had some high winds last year and this year, and I guess that's when I lost them. He patched the area, even though this call was diagnostic. I asked him to price out a new roof, since this one is probably about 30 years old. I know it'll be pricey!

@Crazy For Cats Wow on that car AC repair bill. I know a lot of folks can't even get repairs due to parts shortages.

@0106 Thanks for the recipes.

@StLouisCruisers Sorry the leg pain continues. Prayers for a resolution.

@Seasick Sailor Safe travels home.

@smitty34877 Praying for the whole family as you go through this, especially your DH and Tana as they have more symptoms.

@Cruzin Terri I'm glad you're feeling somewhat better.

@kazu Hang in there with Shadow; she'll come around with time. You are not monopolizing the care list!  Hugs to you on the 3-month anniversary of Jose's passing.

@kplady Have a great trip!

@kb4683 My condolences on the loss of your best friend's DH.

@Quartzsite Cruiser I've never heard of Rita Mae Brown and her series. I'll have to look into it.

@aliaschief Beautiful scenery!

@Live4cruises Have a safe and great trip!

@grapau27 Thanks for reposting Father David's sermon. I'd missed seeing it early in the thread.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast for the Celebration List.

Try to stay safe everyone.

Thanks to everyone posting pictures of Haines and that hammer museum.  I really enjoyed walking around Haines and I bought my husband a hat and a pencil from that museum.  I also went into Alaska Rod's and got him a t shirt and a pocket  knife.  Rod makes all kinds of knives.  My husband would have loved both places if he had actually joined me on that cruise.  Maybe sometime in the future.

Good morning from San Diego.  I really enjoy watermelon in the summer.  We nearly always have avocados in house, and mutts are a mixed bag.

Carbonara became a pasta favorite for us when it was served at a local restaurant.  They have since closed down, and I miss it!  Need to try the recipes!

It's been years since we visited Skagway -- really enjoying the photos.  @marshhawk, will you go there on your Carnival cruise?  I kinda remember that as being next in the hopper.  We really enjoyed our recent Mexico journey with them.  As you said, LOTS of kids in summer, but we were in an adult area with separate pool so no problems there.  Wonderful sunning and swimming.

One thing to share with the group...

We booked a resort day pass through an internet site that sells just the day passes. We tried a Marriott in Puerto Vallarta.  It went without a hitch and was a very nice day.

I hope all have a nice Sunday.   Extra prayers today for @smitty34877Terry and family.  And @kazuJacqui.  I hope Shadow turns a corner to become a comfort and companion.

Thanks to all contributors to our Fleet Report and Daily.

Good morning!  Thank you for the Fleet Report and Daily Rich. Thanks to everyone for sharing.

I woke up too early this morning. A fancy Peterbilt Semi without a trailer decided to park in front of our neighbors house and woke up Blue and that woke us all up. DGD and Craig were able to get back to sleep. Boy, that truck was loud and kept running. I’m wondering if the driver decided to take a nap. Shouldn’t be allowed on a quiet residential street.

Sandi @StLouisCruisers, schools here start August 4th which is also DGD’s 15th birthday— that’s the second time that has happened. Last day of school is May 25th.

I love Carbonara but don’t make it very often. Thank you for the recipes Tina @0106. I should make it more often because it really is an easy meal. We are having carnitas tacos today. I made the pork in the crockpot overnight, that way I can portion it to freeze.

Roy @rafinmd — thank you for having my DM on the care list. You can take her off now because her quarantine ends today. Thank goodness she had a mild case.

Jake @Crazy For Cats, thanks for the reminder about Mighty Cruise Ships. I have the DVR set.

Terry @smitty34877 — I am sorry to hear about you and your family having covid. I hope the meds help and everyone gets better quickly.

Jacqui @kazu — thinking of you today on the 3 months since your DH passed. You have mentioned that you are having a celebration of life for him soon and I can only imagine how hard these days are for you. Also, sorry about the issues with Shadow yesterday but I’m sure things will get better.

Maxine @AncientWanderer— glad to hear you enjoyed your cruise. You will have to let us know when the new grand baby arrives.

I need to get busy even though I’d prefer to veg out today. I promised fresh bread for DGD and need to get that started.

Have a great day everyone!

A doctor on the news  this morning stated what we have now is the new strains of Covid are not covered by the original shots and boosters.  Moderna is working on a new vaccine to fight the new strains but the problem is by the time the new vaccines arrive there will be newer strains. I think you are right that Covid is here to stay with the hope now being that each new strain will be weaker than the last with Covid  eventually becoming just like the regular seasonal flu.

I agree about Covid and also hope each new strain will weaker with less lingering side effects.  Unfortunately, the newer strains also seem to be more highly transmittable.  DH and I are both expecting to get an annual or even semiannual booster along with the flu shot.  I imagine that like the flu shot, it will be a guessing game as to what variant to target in the boosters of the future.

Vanessa, I'm sorry you missed Haines and Skagway.  You'll just have to plan another trip that includes both ports.  It was good that the roofer repaired the leak while he was there.  I hope the estimate of the new roof is not too steep.

Sharon, it's good to hear your DM is out of quarantine and had a mild case.  It's bad enough when drivers leave their big trucks running in a truck stop, but in a quiet neighborhood is just inexcusable.  BTW, my vent, the same goes for big diesel pickups left running in store parking lots, especially when no one is inside the truck.

For the Dailyites who have enjoyed Rita Mae Brown's Mrs. Murphy series, I highly recommend her Sister Jane series.  That series also includes the animals and is centered around fox hunting in Virginia.  If you have not discovered this author, her books are easy reading and great on a BHB or any cruise.

Good afternoon fellow Dailyites from 34000 feet above the Atlantic.  We just passed over the Emerald Isle and will soon be south of Iceland.   The day got off to a bad start when Holland lost my sister's suitcase.  It was put out in plenty of time, properly tagged and with mine and Donna's  bags.  All of ours showed up in the cruise terminal, but not Sue's.  She is really upset as she had purchased two beautiful Norwegian knit sweaters in Bergen.   She rarely splurges and treats herself like that.   When we got to the Amsterdam airport she received an email from Holland that they had logged her lost and found claim and would be looking for her red prescription glasses.  That certainly did not help. I'm really hoping they find it.

The bus ride from Rotterdam to Schiphol wasn't bad.  It didn't seem to take too long.   Schiphol was a mess.  It took us 2 hours to get from the parking lot to the airport lounge.  Fortunately we were able to go through priority security.  That helped immensely as well as having priority check in   I don't think I will ever fly through Schiphol without being in Business Class.   Our first flight was on Lufthansa and Business Class there is kind of a joke.  It is more like Economy in the front of the plane.

@smitty34877 I am so sorry to hear that your whole family has Covid.   Warm wishes for a speedy recovery for all.

@0106 Another stellar job on the Meal of the Day.  Thank you so much for offering to do it for a couple more days while I sleep and do laundry.  We don't get in tonight until 11:50 pm and are staying in a hotel near the airport.  We both have 3.5 hour drives to get home.

@kazu Sorry about the setback with Shadow, but you know it is three steps forward, two back.   You are so good with dogs that Shadow will come around in her own time.   You'll have many happy bonding experiences.

Prayers for all who need them, especially Daily members who are facing struggles and challenges. Cheers to all who are celebrating.  Looking forward to getting back to the Daily full time.

Sharon @Sharon in AZI'm so glad to hear that your DM is doing well and had a mild case!

Debbie @dfishoh NO about Sue's lost suitcase.  I sure hope it turns up real soon and was only misplaced, not lost.  Geesh!  Safe travels home.

Maxine @AncientWandererwe're all excited for you as you are on "baby watch"  🙂

@dfishDebbie, that is alarming about Sue's bag.  Every time we put ours out, there is always that thought...what if.  It looked like you guys had a great trip; hopefully the bag will turn up and all will be well.

Btw...what time was your flight out of Schiphol?  We booked one at 12:50 next spring, also needing to get from Rotterdam, and I'm a little nervous about it.  (Maybe the airports will be operating better by then, though.)  We do have business class, but still...

Safe travels the rest of the way home!

Thank you, Carolyn.  I had a dinner here last night for DS's family with their three-year-old and new baby and also DD's family, with their three-year-old and the bun in the oven.  I said it was to celebrate puppy Pocket's first birthday, but more it was to get everyone together before the next baby arrives.  It seems like with all these babies and toddlers, everyone is going to be too busy to get together much.   Or one of them will always have the sniffles.  You know how it goes...

Oh...and about school start times.  Yes, early!  DGD starts back at preschool on August 17 (parochial school).  We'll be picking her up from school for awhile, as the new baby will be here by then.

And @kb4683Kay, sincere condolences to you, and friends and family.  Losses like that are hard...losing a bit of our own life history as well.  Sad.  Thinking of you with affection.

Hi Maxine,

Our flight was at 2:55 pm.  However, Donna's was at 12:50 pm and she did get to the gate with no problem.   In Security they do have a priority lane for people who have a flight within the next hour.   But, the Priority Security for Business Class had no backup and was like going through the line in a small home town airport.  What took us so long was all the walking.  I think 12:50 will be fine.

Can't wait to hear about the new grand baby!

Debbie, i am glad you all had a great cruise.

I am sorry to hear about your sister Sue’s luggage.  I will start praying to St. Anthony, the patron Saint of Lost items.  Hopefully it will show up.

i am sure she is upset.  I will pray hard that the luggage shows up.  Keep us up to date.

Good Morning, a program reminder.  The Nieuw Statendam is on Mighty Cruise Ships tonight on the Smithsonian Channel.  I’m recording it to watch on a larger screen.

My cable network does not carry the Smithsonian Channel and I spent about two hours trying to see if I can install it as an app.  No luck because my carrier is not listed.

Does anyone know if there is a way to watch this on one’s computer?

There are many pay option but don’t want to subscribe for one show.

The schools in our small town will begin classes on August 17, a Wednesday, but the athletes and band will begin practice tomorrow.  The last day of school will be May 26, 2023.  When we were in school, we started the Tuesday after labor day and ended sometime the week after Memorial Day.  When schools wanted to add more days off during the school year and still needed to keep the required 180 class days, the beginning of school was moved to early to mid-August.

Lenda, thanks for your photos of Haines.  Also it seems like most of our students so far are going to be very happy on May 26, last day of school!

Good Morning, Dailyites!  Thank you to everyone here for making this a place of sharing and caring.  Cheers to those celebrating and hugs to those on the care list.

I have been laying low this week because of some news I received that just totally bummed me out.  My very best friend growing up lost her husband last weekend and it really hit home.  We were each other's honor attendants (her only and my first wedding) and even tho we don't communicate as much as we should, we can pick right up just like miles and years have melted away.

OK, enough of my sad story.  On to Haines.  We were there on July 1, 2019, during our 21-day Alaskan cruise on Maasdam which was round trip from San Francisco (wonderful cruise).

I do hope the future boosters will help with all the new strains, but not an easy job figuring that out.

Another bit of news I heard is that Paxlovid may need to be given longer than 5 days because it suppresses the virus causing early negative tests.  Then suddenly you rebound with positive tests again.  Perhaps 7 or 8 days would stamp out these secondary positives.

Sandi @StLouisCruisersI checked the school calendar for the grandsons here, and they will start school on August 31 this year.  This is the earliest ever, it's always been after or closer to Labor Day.  I couldn't find out when school ends, but usually it's been around the middle of June. Summers here don't really start until we're into July, so it has worked out well.

My photos from Skagway are all from the White Pass Railroad tour we took.

Carolyn, those are beautiful White Pass Railroad photos!

It seems like everybody should be getting busy finishing up their back to school shopping.  I'd better remember Wednesday when I drive past our nearest elementary school to get to the dentist that I have to slow down now for the school zone speed change.  They've installed cameras and are very strict with speeding.  No 25 mph school zone limits during the summer months.

My best~~

Oh, I hope the weather is good for you while visiting the mountains of North Georgia.  Enjoy time spent with the family!

Thanks - the crate is gone - she was spread out so there was no way I could get her in.  I’ll use an exercise kennel for her instead and pray for no accidents 😉. I doubt she will ever go in one - at least not for many months.

Shadow is keeping you very busy!  I hope the crate training works out before long and not for many months as you anticipate.

And hugs to you as you pass the 3 month anniversary of losing Jose.  When is your commemoration at your home?

Not sure how to get this quote box to move.  Beyond my pay grade apparently.

@0106 Thanks for the recipes.

@StLouisCruisers Sorry the leg pain continues. Prayers for a resolution.

@Seasick Sailor Safe travels home.

@kplady Have a great trip!

@kb4683 My condolences on the loss of your best friend's DH.

@Quartzsite Cruiser I've never heard of Rita Mae Brown and her series. I'll have to look into it.

@aliaschief Beautiful scenery!

@Live4cruises Have a safe and great trip!

@grapau27 Thanks for reposting Father David's sermon. I'd missed seeing it early in the thread.

Prayers for the Care List and a Toast for the Celebration List.

Try to stay safe everyone.

Thank goodness you have the temporary fix for the roof right now and good luck with the quotes for a whole new roof.  I hear that's a pricey fix.

Terri,

There's another discussion on the HAL boards here that has a link to a Vimeo video of the show.

The title is "Nieuw Statendam Featured On Mighty Cruise Ships - July 31" It's post #4 on there.

That may help.

Debbie, I'm sorry about your sister's lost bag.  That's not the way you want a great cruise to end.  I hope they find the bag and get it to her soon.  I hope someone did not pick it up by mistake, and if they did, I hope they will return it to her asap.  It was good that the rest of the disembarkation and the security at the airport worked so well.  Safe travels the rest of the way home.

Maxine, what a great idea to get the family together to celebrate Pocket's first birthday, so they could all be together before the next little one arrives and school resumes.  It seems families are busier than we were when our kids were little.  Looking forward to pictures of the little one if you are able to share pictures with us.
