Dress code adherence

First time Celebrity cruisers, and we're wondering if the "Chic" attire applies to the entire ship or just MDR/specialty dining and shows.  We don't eat in the MDR, so on "Chic" nights are we going to get the stink eye for wandering the ship in nice shorts, sandals and camp shirts?  I've scoured the web site and it's not really clear on the subject.  Thanks in advance

FYI: It was the very first google search result...Answer: "The dress code will be enforced at all restaurants. And guests are asked to follow the Smart Casual or Evening Chic dress code in the Celebrity Theater for all evening performances."

My experience, they'll be zero dress code enforcement other than the restaurants.  On all my sailings, I always see dress code violations during dinner so enforcement hasn't been very strict.

Walking around or eating at a restaurant?  I can stand around and judge you but you have to pay my cruise fare.

Watching people is always interesting.  Years ago was my favorite pastime when in Vegas.

There is more judgment passed on Cruise Critic than on board.  If someone in something less than "evening chic" is in the dining room best to ignore their appearance and not let it ruin your cruise.

2023 is casual to very casual.  Like it or not it is reality today.

PS nobody ever cared - even in the 1990s - what someone wore outside the dining rooms.

Chic applies only to the MDR - not to specialty restaurants, Blu, Luminae or the buffet.

Years ago, people "dressed up" for dinner and the theatre. Now you see everything everywhere all evening. There will always be people who judge, and there will always be people in the theatre  in shorts.

I think you should walk by the MDR in your shorts and give the stink eye to everyone that’s been sitting in there for 90+ minutes, all dressed up, still waiting for dessert, and wondering where the sommelier went. That’s just me though.

Thanks for sharing this.  40 years ago men were chastised for wearing a sports coat on formal night.  20 years ago for not wearing a only a dress shirt - no coat or tie.  Today on our last cruise the MDR  had lots of sweatshirts and jeans on Chic night.

Simply the facts.

We often say we wished we’d discovered cruising earlier but one of the things that put us off was having to dress formally. So glad the rules have been relaxed and the new rules accommodate those of us who want to be smart casual. Wouldn’t want them relaxing further other than men should be equal to women and be allowed to wear tailored shorts in MDR of an evening.

Thanks for the answers.  I understand what the docs say (even though that's a bit vague, INHO), my question was more to the level of adherence   As I said, we are not MDR or show people, so I just wanted some assurance that we'd not be confronted on Chic night on our way to casino by a throng of shocked pearl clutchers.  Really didn't intend this to be a spectacle thread.  I would have asked about smoking areas if that was my intent.  Again, thanks.  Sounds like we'll be OK.

  • 4 weeks later...

We haven't been on Celebrity in many years so I can't comment about dressing. I do see that things are very similar to Princess in many respects and dressing is pretty much left up to the individual to decide.

IMO, I have been on many X cruises.

Dress code is NOT enforced, at all.

We have seen folks in MDR wearing shorts, flip flops, tank tops, etc, staff did nothing.

I think staff is afraid to confront people who break rules, seen it many times over and over.

You forgot to mention the ripped jeans which seem ok for women but not men???

Actually, in the 1990's my son was refused entry into the main theater during the Captain's toast on chic night (then formal night) because he had changed his shoes into athletic shoes rather than dress shoes.  Hard to believe but true!  Celebrity has come a long way since then (and I am one who thinks for the worse vis a vis dressing, but not going to get into it any further on these boards!)

Prior to COVID I saw a passenger refused entry into the MDR for dinner because he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt.  This was not on formal night either.   Have only sailed in suites since the restart and have not really paid attention.  The only reason I remember that one instance is because he became very loud and vocal with the maitre'd.

Worse?  You mean like allowing tennis shoes?  Or do you mean they should allow it?

Like I said, not getting into a debate on it here on CC. There's already way more of that discussion than there needs to be

If people followed the dress code there would be no discussion.  Except the CC posts “Can you believe Zitsky wore Versace to Luminae instead of Chanel???  How gauche.”
