I've never heard of port agents looking into guest cabins. Random search of cabins and just bad luck for Ovie's owners? What other countries do guest cabin searches? They are are looking for drugs not cats. Many countries do it. When a ship is docked it is in the country it is docked in and subject to their laws.

Not entirely correct. While things like drug enforcement is the jurisdiction of the "port state", for the most part, "port state" laws do not apply on the ship, even when docked, the "flag state" laws apply. Typically, the only time that "port state" laws apply is when the "safety or good order" of the port state is endangered, or the situation is part of an "external" action on the ship (like taxes on commerce, pollution, etc).
George C Posted December 27, 2023 #4 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Owners of the cat were complete idiots. We have seen dogs on rccl and celebrity ships but not smuggled and of course captain Kate has a cat.

And she has to follow the regulations of ports for Bug. I was at a Q&A with her when I sailed on the Edge, and she said that when she obtained permission from management for Bug, she had to do the legwork herself to get the right paperwork, and she knew that having Bug with her would limit where she was allowed to sail due to quarantine regulations. Pretty sure the South Pacific/Australia/New Zealand area was one that would have been off limits because of the strictness of the laws there.

Rare Neeny12 Posted December 27, 2023 #10 Share Posted December 27, 2023 I read an initial report that said this was a rescue cat that was supposed to be euthanized. This was a desperate attempt by someone to save the cat. Earlier reports also say it was unclear if the person who smuggled the cat was the cat’s owner.🤷🏻♀️🐈⬛ Lucky kitty. I kid!

micruiser2002 Posted December 27, 2023 #14 Share Posted December 27, 2023 This whole story is so confusing because they still have not said how or who "smuggled" the cat onboard yet they say they found it in a guest cabin? This is what Bayley said which makes it seem like they do not know who did it. Royal Caribbean Cruises president and CEO Michael Bayley put out a statement on Dec. 22 saying they “believe” a guest smuggled the small feline onto the cruise. helen haywood Posted December 27, 2023 #15 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Doubt we’ll ever know the whole story. Unless Royal has video evidence of who brought the cat onboard they aren’t going to release the passenger’s name. Happy the cat can go onto another of its 9 lives!
GimmeOcean Posted December 27, 2023 #16 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Probably don't have any solid proof other than what they've seen from security footage. Interesting that earlier stories said that the cat would likely be returned to its owners, however now it's been adopted by a RC employee in Miami. Perhaps the owner was not willing to foot the bill for the cat to be returned.

In the New York Post article it says they declined to name the traveler in whose cabin the cat was found. So they know who booked the cabin. Possibly the person who booked the cabin was not the person who brought the cat onboard though but someone on the booking. In any case they are not going to release a name. Rare Mary229 Posted December 27, 2023 #20 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Every time we see a small lap dog on the ship my DH pouts “why don’t they let us bring the cat?” 🐈 No reason is given but I wonder what the original reason was for bringing the cat. 1
RuthC Posted December 27, 2023 #21 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Poor kitty! What an awful experience for him. And stupid human that brought the kitty aboard! With such poor judgement, that person should never be allowed to have an animal again. Not to mention that person should be banned from Royal Caribbean, and every other cruise line. 23 1
Rare kazu Posted December 28, 2023 #22 Share Posted December 28, 2023 Completely agree with @RuthC. I am so glad that the cat has a new owner. the old one didn’t deserve it.
