rkacruiser Posted September 16, 2017 #101 Share Posted September 16, 2017 Just fired off the following.... To Whom it may Concern, It has been brought to my attention that Holland America has discontinued the practice of supplying a copy of the Cruise Log at the completion of a voyage. This Cruise Log has been a very important memento of my Holland America Cruises and has been safely kept and treasured as an informative reminder of my cruise experience. I am appalled that it will no longer be available and implore you to reverse this decision and reinstate the Cruise Log (preferably prior to my embarkation for my next cruise on 27th Sept). I would be more than happy to pay a small token for the privilege of receiving the log should the cost be an issue for HAL or if it is the carbon footprint issue that concerns you then perhaps you could do away with all the unnecessary and irritating commercial advertising material we are bombarded with instead. Hear, Hear with your comments. Except, I have no interest in paying "more" for a Cruise Log that should be priced into whatever I have paid for my cruise. sail7seas Posted September 16, 2017 #102 Share Posted September 16, 2017 I like the idea of mailing all of the "junk mail" from the cruise to Mr. Ashford's office. Maybe include a short note that says "In an effort to reduce my carbon footprint I am mailing this all back to you so that it can be used again on another sailing. Perhaps now you will be able to provide a cruise log." Great idea, FFrank. Had I known of this during my cruise, I would not have immediately tossed out all the junk mail they wasted paper and ink. I discarded all of it daily.. . I would have brought it home and mailed it to: Office of the President. :) He couuld have used it to jot down quick money savving ideas thagtg occur to him while at work in his office..... hrhdhd Posted September 17, 2017 #108 Share Posted September 17, 2017 So how about just a tiny bit of THINKING and produce a PDF of the cruise log...last i checked a PDF file has zero carbon footprint...plus i highly doubt that very many if any passengers DISPOSE of the cruise log.....unlike the tons of crap flyers put in the trash of every room everyday and the hundreds of pictures printed and disposed of as well.... The file might have zero carbon footprint, but computers, servers, and other related equipment use a lot of energy. Paper, on the other hand, is a renewable resource. Sue from Canada Posted September 17, 2017 #111 Share Posted September 17, 2017 (bold is mine) Ashford is supposedly a tech-savvy guy. If he's so worried about carbon footprint, why doesn't he update the photo service to have you find your pictures on a computer system? Cunard has gone to this on QM2. They print just enough pictures from embarkation and first captain's party to fill the few racks they have. Portraits and everything after that are on the computers. They're organized in a way that's easy to use once you learn how the menus work. And they must be saving on staff time, too. Uploading and organizing files is faster than printing and putting up pictures. Good idea from the QM2. HAL could also post all those sale flyers, spa flyers etc on one of their TV channels. Rare steamboats Posted September 17, 2017 #113 Share Posted September 17, 2017 Seems like the communication with the head office on the Zaandam is pretty slow :D! We still received the cruise log on our Aug 13th-20th cruise. But we didn´t have a chocolate parade which was announce app. 10 days prior to our cruise. When I inquired they never heard about it. So maybe the cruise log is replaced by the chocolate parade ;)? steamboats
USNUZULOOSE Posted September 17, 2017 #114 Share Posted September 17, 2017 Even as PDF , they may not want to hire someone to do it either, which is a cost saver to them. Some day we might have to guess what our day to day things will be.

Only suggestion I would make is not only address this mailing to Mr Ashford but use that same address for the return address on the envelope or package. Drop the envelope in the mail, the post office will process it and HAL will have to pay the cost of postage upon delivery. That will get their attention! AmazedByCruising Posted September 17, 2017 #118 Share Posted September 17, 2017 I don't think I paid attention to the breakfast times on the Cruise Log. The first thing I always looked at was how many passengers were on board. The Cruise Log pulls together a lot of information about the journey and is Holland America literally saying "Thank you for sailing with us." That is the feeling of community that will be lost if there is no Cruise Log to sum up the journey. I was going to comment that the cruise log didn't give me any useful information (and was even wrong), but yes I did like the "Thank you for sailing with us" part. Much better than the letter we got a few days after embarkation already asking how we planned to get off. :)

I liked having the list of officers on the log.. I don't always remember names but will rememb er niec things someone may ha v e done, and after my cruise, I like to look back to recall the name of someone who went out of their way for me. The log provided the reminder I sometimes need. Sometimes I recalll a person from a cruise but forget which cruise, which ship. Bec ause I have many of the logs saved, I can refer to them.. DeeniEncinitas Posted September 17, 2017 #120 Share Posted September 17, 2017 I agree with all of you!! I always felt bad getting all the daily junk mail and sorting the trash from recycled junk in trash cans provided in suites. I wondered if it was really recycled? No Cruise log? Fine with me. I write my journals and enjoy recapping at home. Looking forward to my month cruise in February to Peru. Wonder if I will still get junk mail on The Maasdam? RMLincoln Posted September 17, 2017 #121 Share Posted September 17, 2017 Cutting out the Cruise Log seems a very poor way to save a few pennies... I wonder if something went into a Cruise log that got them in trouble and the lawyers wanted to eliminate that avenue for future liability exposure. I will miss having them and will make a note to remind me to put that on the survey. This seems just one more way HAL becomes like other cruise lines, a step down toward mass mediocrity. Do luxury or premium lines give out Cruise Logs? m--
Rare ski ww Posted September 18, 2017 #122 Share Posted September 18, 2017 I sent an email to all three addresses. Guest services was an auto reply. The office of the President got back to me saying sorry for the disappointment but are not currently able to provide cruise logs. All appropriate senior management is reviewing the reintroduction of the cruise logs to our fleet in the future. I guess time will tell. oaktreerb Posted September 18, 2017 #123 Share Posted September 18, 2017 I sent my comments snail mail along with samples of the Cruise Log just in case Mr. Ashford has not seen the Cruise Log. You never know if the decision makers are familiar with the smaller offerings that some of us obviously value. I hope my letter and enclosures get past the secretary's desk.
